Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 2010 movie won Colin Firth his first Oscar, starred previous Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush in the supporting role and featured the quote: "Because I have a right to be heard. I have a voice!"?

Answer: The King's Speech

Colin Firth starred as Albert, second son of George V, who reluctantly became King George VI after his older brother abdicated in favour of love with Wallis Simpson. Albert had stuttered throughout his life, but as he was not expected to take the throne, he had never received treatment for it. His affliction became a severe problem for him when his speeches to a wartime England were to be broadcast into people's homes.

Geoffrey Rush starred as Australian Lionel Logue who helped "Bertie" overcome his speech impediment and was by the King's side during all of his broadcast speeches. This movie, based on the true story of George VI, also starred Helena Bonham Carter as Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Jennifer Ehle, who played Elizabeth Bennett to Firth's Mr. Darcy in the BBC version of "Pride and Prejudice", played the role of Logue's wife, Myrtle.

2. In the irreverent "Carry on Cleo", which Kenneth Williams character speaks the line: "I've cleaned up this city. Have you forgotten my slogan? "Nihil expectore in omnibus" - no spitting on the public transport."?

Answer: Julius Caesar

Released in 1964, this was the tenth in the "Carry On" series. With Kenneth Williams as Emperor Julius Caesar, Sid James as Mark Antony and Amanda Barrie as Cleopatra, the film has little or no regard for historical accuracy.

Another well known quote from the film is "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!" Spoken by Kenneth Williams this has often been described as the "all time funniest one liner in a film".

3. In which film, starring Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn, does King Henry II say "We're in the cellar and you're going back to prison and my life is wasted and we've lost each other..and you're smiling."?

Answer: The Lion in Winter

Starring Peter O'Toole as King Henry II and Katherine Hepburn as his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, this 1968 film follows events of Christmas 1183. Henry II has summoned his wife, who he had imprisoned ten years earlier, his three sons and his mistress to join him for Christmas. The film depicts the tense but passionate relationship between Henry and Eleanor and the plots and deceptions she and her three sons engage in the make Henry decide who is to be his heir.

Katherine Hepburn received the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance, but had to share it in a tie with Barbra Streisand who won for "Funny Girl".

4. In which 1944 classic film, set during the Battle of Agincourt, did Laurence Olivier murmur to Renee Asherson "Quand sur la possession de France et quand vous avez la possession de moi - donc votre est France et vous etes mienne."?

Answer: Henry V

This speech is at the end of "Henry V", where King Henry (Olivier) is courting the French princess, Katherine of Valois (Asherson). She speaks almost no English and his French is, to say the least, minimal. While she had been learning some words from her maid Alice, some of the English words sound rude to her French ears. The subsequent dialogue between Katherine and Henry is an amusing flirtation in two fractured languages.

Shakespeare's "Henry V" has been filmed at least twice. The film made in 1944 starred Laurence Olivier as Henry and Renee Asherson as Katherine de Valois. More recently, the 1989 version starred Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, and was a far more realistic interpretation with less pageantry and lots of mud.

5. Which 1967 Film adaptation of Sir Thomas Malory's works saw Richard Harris urge Gary Marsh to "Run behind the lines, Tom."?

Answer: Camelot

The film of "Camelot" was adapted from the stage play and starred Richard Harris as Arthur, and Vanessa Redgrave as Guinevere. Lancelot was played by Franco Nero. A young Gary Marsh played the role of Tom of Warwick.

Toward the end of the film, when King Arthur and Lancelot are preparing to fight the final battle, Arthur comes across a boy called Tom. Tom still believes in all the ideals of Camelot, and Arthur realises that, despite the way that things have gone so wrong, the boy is right and that the idea of the Round Table still matters. He sees that this boy could be the way of making sure that Camelot can go on being remembered - "that one brief, shining moment that was known as Camelot".

Arthur knights Tom, who becomes Sir Tom Malory of Warwick, and tells the boy to run behind the lines to safety.

6. Which 2008 movie about a famous royal love triangle, starred Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana and featured this exchange? "Why? Why this cruelty? You know I love him." "Then you'd better stop."

Answer: The Other Boleyn Girl

This movie centres on the intrigue, seduction and betrayal inherent in Henry VIII's court and his encompassing desire for a son. Henry falls in love with newly married Mary, but while she's in confinement his affections turn to her sister Anne, who plays on his wish for a legitimate son. She steals the King's fickle affection away from Mary, who has since fallen in love with Henry, and marries him herself. This act brings about his divorce from Katherine of Aragon, his excommunication from the Roman Catholic church and ultimately, the execution of both Anne and her brother George.

7. He's not exactly royalty but in which film, where Groucho Marx becomes ruler/dictator of Freedonia does he say this line: "You're a brave man. Go and break through the lines. And remember, while you're out there risking your life and limb through shot and shell, we'll be in here thinking what a sucker you are."?

Answer: Duck Soup

As well as the anarchic Marx Brothers, "Duck Soup" (1933) stars the wonderful Margaret Dumont, who plays Mrs Gloria Teasdale, a wealthy widow, who financially supports the bankrupt Freedonia. She insists that Rufus T Firefly, played by Groucho, be made ruler. Meanwhile the neighbouring country, Sylvania, wants to take over and enlists the incompetent support of the other Marx brothers. As diplomacy, unsurprisingly, fails the two countries go to war in some of the funniest battle scenes ever seen on film. "Duck Soup" ends with Mrs Teasdale singing the national anthem of Freedonia, while the brothers pelt her with fruit.

This film was not initially a financial success and had mixed reviews, but is now regarded as one of the best Marx Brothers films made.

8. In which adventure film from 1952 and starring Stewart Granger, does King Rudolf V say "You must forgive me if I seem a little slow, but it's a bit early in the day to see double. Even for me."?

Answer: The Prisoner of Zenda

The plot of "The Prisoner of Zenda" revolves around the substitution of a distant English cousin, Rudolf Rassendyll, for the king of Ruritania, King Rudolf V, a tippler who is too unreliable to be trusted with his own coronation. The Englishman plays the part well and even gains the interest of the king's fiancee, Princess Flavia, who approves of his sobriety. When the king is found to have been abducted the Englishman must continue his masquerade until his cousin is rescued and restored to the throne.

The plot of "The Prisoner of Zenda" has been used at least thirteen times in the theatre, radio productions and films.

"The Prisoner of Benda" was the title of an episode in Futurama, "The Prisoner of Azkaban" was a Harry Potter title and "Double Indemnity" has no relevance to this film.

9. Which "Royal" movie would you be watching if you heard Helen Mirren utter the words: "Nowadays people want glamour and tears, the grand performance. I've never been good at that."?

Answer: The Queen

"The Queen" (2006) focuses on the Royal family in the wake of the death of Diana, ex-wife of Prince Charles. It explains their reluctance to leave their Scottish home of Balmoral Castle, the pleas of the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair to get them to relent, and shows the public outpouring of grief over Diana's death.

Of particular note is the division between Elizabeth II and Prince Charles, with her Majesty determined the funeral be a private affair of "The Spencers". Charles was equally adamant that, despite their divorce, as mother of the future King of England, she deserved better.
