Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which 1993 movie, set in 1976, did Randall 'Pink' Floyd and his friends celebrate the last day of the school year?

Answer: Dazed and Confused

Richard Linklater's "Dazed and Confused" featured a large ensemble cast of actors, many of whom later became quite famous. 'Pink' Floyd was played by Jason London; other featured actors included Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Parker Posey, and Milla Jovovich. Renee Zellweger also appeared very briefly, in an uncredited role.

The entire span of the movie covered just a few hours, starting with school letting out for the summer. The high school class that would be seniors in the fall started their summer vacation by hazing the new group of freshmen. Later, the teens had a big party at the Moon Tower, after a few hours of aimless driving around and hanging out. A plot detail that followed through the film was that of Pink and his football team buddies being asked to sign a pledge that they would not do drugs over the summer. To the great displeasure of the football coach, Pink refused to sign his.
2. In what 2004 movie did the leading characters go through a series of ridiculous setbacks trying to satisfy their munchies?

Answer: Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

The titular Harold and Kumar were very different people, but best friends. One night they decided that they absolutely had to have some White Castle, and set out to get it. After getting attacked by a raccoon, performing surgery in a hospital, having their car stolen by Neil Patrick Harris, riding an escaped cheetah and more, they did finally arrive at White Castle - only to find they had no money. Good thing Neil Patrick Harris showed up again and bought them some food by way of apology.

Harold and Kumar were played by John Cho and Kal Penn. In addition to Neil Patrick Harris playing a fictionalized version of himself, the movie featured brief roles played by Ryan Reynolds and Fred Willard.
3. In what 2008 movie did a guy and his drug dealer go on the run from a drug lord after seeing him kill a man?

Answer: Pineapple Express

"Pineapple Express", written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg in conjunction with Judd Apatow, starred Seth Rogen as Dale and James Franco as Saul, Dale's drug dealer. Other featured actors included Rosie Perez and Gary Cole.

In the movie, Dale saw Ted, the drug lord, and Officer Brazier, a dirty cop, kill a man. Dale fled the scene, but left behind some marijuana he'd recently gotten from Saul. It was a rare strain - Pineapple Express - and that led to Ted being able to trace it back to Saul and Dale. They left town but were captured and held hostage. They ended up okay in the end, after being caught up in a fight between rival drug gangs.
4. In which movie, the first feature-length film for a certain duo, did Man and Pedro get deported to Mexico and get back to the US by smuggling in a van completely covered in a form of marijuana?

Answer: Up in Smoke

1978's "Up in Smoke" was Cheech and Chong's first movie. Tommy Chong played Anthony 'Man' Stoner and Cheech Marin was Pedro de Pacas. The two characters met in the beginning of the movie and became fast friends due to their shared enjoyment of smoking marijuana. The movie also featured Stacy Keach and Tom Skerritt.

After being arrested together shortly after they met, Pedro and Man were let off and soon ended up deported to Tijuana with Pedro's friends and relatives (who had actually wanted a free ride to Mexico to attend a wedding). To get back, they agreed to drive a van back to the US and ended up in a van constructed out of forms of hardened marijuana resin. They had some close calls with the police, but they made it to Los Angeles. The van slowly burned (and everyone felt the effects). Pedro and Man also ended up winning a Battle of the Bands and getting a record deal, but in the end they crashed Pedro's car while smoking hash - and that was it.
5. In what 2008 movie, the second in a series, did the stars have their travel plans derailed and, after a series of crazy events, end up hanging out with George W. Bush and breaking up an engaged couple?

Answer: Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

The second "Harold and Kumar" installment picked up where the last film left off. Harold and Kumar were heading to Amsterdam. Things went wrong when Kumar, apparently unable to wait, decided to smoke pot on the plane. Already disturbed to be seated near the non-white Kumar, an older lady saw his paraphernalia, got the wrong idea and denounced him as terrorist. Harold and Kumar were promptly arrested and sent to Guantanamo Bay. They managed to escape and get back to the US. They then had to try to track down Kumar's ex-girlfriend Vanessa and her fiance Colton, who could help clear their names.

The duo's crazy adventures this time around involved ending up in the midst of a KKK rally, an encounter with a cyclops, visiting a brothel with Neil Patrick Harris and parachuting through George W. Bush's roof (not the real George W.). They were pardoned by Bush and Kumar got back together with Vanessa. They then resumed their trip to Amsterdam and Vanessa went with them.
6. Now a cult classic, this film was originally intended as anti-marijuana propaganda to be screened to parents, in order to have them scare their children away from drugs. Which of these films has also gone by the names "Tell Your Children", "Doped Youth" and "The Burning Question"?

Answer: Reefer Madness

The film was originally made as "Tell Your Children" in 1936. A couple of years later it was purchased by a producer who marketed it around the US under various titles. When it was found again in the 1970s, it became a cult favourite due to its hilariously bad story/production.

Presented as a warning to parents on the dangers of drugs, the film featured an unmarried couple who made their living selling drugs to young people. One of the kids, Jimmy, ran over a pedestrian while driving under the influence of marijuana and killed him. Other events 'caused' by marijuana use in the movie included the shooting death of a young girl and a young man completely losing his sanity.
7. In which 2014 movie, based on a Canadian TV series, did Ricky, Julian and Bubbles go to Parliament Hill to protest marijuana reform?

Answer: Trailer Park Boys: Don't Legalize It

"Trailer Park Boys: Don't Legalize It" was the third feature film in the "Trailer Park Boys" franchise, following 2006's "Trailer Park Boys: The Movie" and 2009's "Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day". The original movie was intended (in part) to introduce the franchise to a wider audience in the US and many plot elements of the first movie were the same as early episodes of the show. The TV show is far better than each of the movies, though.

In "Don't Legalize It", Ricky was managing a marijuana grow-op and feared that potential legalization of marijuana would seriously damage his business. He decided that he had to go to Ottawa to protest legalization. Most of the gang from the trailer park went along and had some adventures on the journey. Ricky ended up getting a license to grow and sell marijuana and his business boomed.
8. Two stoner characters from director Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse got their own feature film in which 2001 movie?

Answer: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

The characters Jay and Silent Bob, played by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, first appeared in the 1994 film "Clerks", and also in most of Kevin Smith's subsequent films, produced by View Askew Studios. Jay and Silent Bob could usually be found selling drugs outside the Quik Stop convenience store, but in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", they embarked on a journey to Hollywood to prevent a movie based on their comic book alter egos, Bluntman and Chronic, from being made.

The "Bluntman and Chronic" comic books were first conceived in the 1997 Kevin Smith movie "Chasing Amy", in which main character Banky Edwards (played by Jason Lee), with Holden McNeil (played by Ben Affleck), created the comics based on Jay and Silent Bob. After "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", real-life "Bluntman and Chronic" comics were published.
9. In which 2011 holiday movie were two best friends brought back together by a magical marijuana cigarette sent to them by Santa?

Answer: A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas

Yes, it's the third installment of the "Harold and Kumar" series! In this one, Harold and Kumar were not really friends any more; Harold was a married businessman and Kumar was still living the stoner life. When a package arrived for Harold at Kumar's apartment, Kumar decided to take it to him. The package turned out to have a joint in it, which Kumar immediately lit up. One thing led to another and Harold's father-in-law's beloved Christmas tree burned down. This led the pair on an adventure to try to replace it.

The shenanigans this time around involved the Ukrainian mafia, a baby getting drugged and of course, Neil Patrick Harris. Harold and Kumar ended up being friends again, and it was revealed in the end that the package with the joint in it had been from Santa, sent to bring the two friends back together.
10. In which 2001 movie did two friends, played by rappers, manage to get into Harvard University with the help of their dead friend?

Answer: How High

Method Man and Redman starred in this comedy. When their friend died, they used his ashes as fertilizer to grow marijuana. As a result, when they smoked it, the ghost of their friend appeared to them. The ghost was able to give them all the answers to their college placement tests, leading to them being accepted into Harvard. The ghost continued to help them pass all their exams. They ran into trouble when their pot was stolen and they no longer had the ghost to help them. Everything worked out in the end, though.

Other actors who appeared in this movie include Fred Willard, Melissa Peterman, Lark Voorhies and Hector Elizondo.
