Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film opens with a father and a son trying to hunt and kill what type of animal?

Answer: Alligator

As their boat drifts across the bog, the father complains that they've lost a twelve-footer, which they won't leave behind. But since they've lost it for the past three hours, it's simply been a waiting game. When the son, Ainsley, needs to go to the washroom, his father tells him to go off the side of the boat since he's not taking them to shore.

When he does this (after some delay), the gator comes up and tries to bite him. The father grabs the harpoon while Ainsley falls back into the boat, but they lose the alligator in the bog.

It takes some convincing, but Ainsley has his father pull the boat to the shore so that he can take a leak in the bushes, but while this happens the rain begins to pour. The father thinks he hears the alligator in the water and he tells Ainsley to stay back in the woods and not make a sound, but after a few moments of silence, he returns to the boat to investigate. Soon, however, he discovers that his father's body is on the shore, split in two.

He grabs up the harpoon to defend himself, but the attacker lunges at him from the bushes and knocks him down before pulling him into the woods, tearing his arm off, digging into his back, and finally tearing him in two.
2. Where do Ben and Marcus initially go for their swamp tour?

Answer: Rev. Zombie's Voodoo Shop

The scene shifts to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, where Ben, Marcus, and their buddies are celebrating the festivities on Bourbon St. As they separate themselves from the crowd for a bit of air, Ben tells them how much he dislikes Mardi Gras, having recently broken up with his girlfriend, Christine.

He decides to break off with the rest of them for the day. Marcus decides to drop his beads and follow him, trying to change his mind and get him to have fun, but Ben decides that he would rather go on a haunted swamp tour recommended by his friends at home.

They end up arriving a few blocks away at Rev. Zombie's Voodoo Shop to find it closed, but rather than leave like Marcus recommends, Ben knocks and Rev. Zombie opens the door to send them away.

He tells them that he no longer does the swamp tour because of what happened. When they ask for an explanation, he tells them that when he performed his final swamp tour the previous Halloween, a kid saw eyes in the bog, and while he was spooked, he happened to dangle his feet over the edge, slip into the bog, and hit his head.

The result was that he sued Rev. Zombie for negligence, and now he no longer does the tours. He bids Ben and Marcus good day and tells them to head two blocks down the road - another shop is conducting swamp tours instead.
3. Where does Jenna claim that she went to school?

Answer: NYU

Ben and Marcus find their way to Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo and walk inside to get tickets for the tour. While Ben looks for the proprietor, Marcus spies a group of people in the corner; two women, half-naked, and a middle-aged man with a video camera filming their exploitations.

While the man with the camera, Shapiro, replaces his camcorder batteries, the two women, Misty and Jenna, argue over each other's roles in Shapiro's movie. Jenna states that she should not have to go through such ordeals since she went to school at NYU, while Misty argues that no one's even heard of NYU.

They resume their filming before the owner of the store, Shawn, hops out and introduces himself, asking for forty dollars each for the tour. While the group takes their seats on 'the scare bus', Ben sits down next to a girl named Marybeth, who, although Ben tries to talk with her, resists and says that she didn't come on the tour and pay $30 to make friends with him. Soon after, the bus departs.
4. What is the name of the man who attempts to warn the tour of the river ahead?

Answer: Jack Cracker

The tour bus begins by making its way past one of New Orleans' many graveyards. As Shawn has trouble recalling the tales of the locales (even with cue cards), he is frequently interrupted by Jim and Shannon Parmatteo, a homely couple on a sightseeing vacation.

While this devalues the tour, Ben is busy trying to talk to Marybeth in the back corner of the bus and Marcus is having a successful talk with Jenna, one of the 'actresses' along for the ride. Soon enough though, the bus begins to arrive at its location and everyone files out the door. Shawn closes up the bus and they head towards the river were a modestly-lit boat is docked on the side. Shapiro takes the time to film another scene by the boat while the Permatteo couple watches from the sidelines (while Shannon is somewhat shocked, Jim stares in wonder at the two women posing and flirting for the camera).

As everyone takes their seats (identical to those on the bus), Shawn tries to start the boat, but while he does this, a man in a boat further up the river calls out to them, shouting that the river is closed. No one can hear what he's saying though, and Shawn says that his name is Jack Cracker, and that they shouldn't mind him as he just lives nearby, shouts at people, and drinks his own urine.

As the boat finally starts to move, they wave goodbye and Jack's warnings never catch on.
5. Who gets attacked by an alligator during the tour?

Answer: Mr. Permatteo

The boat tour soon begins, and while the Permatteos continue to correct Shawn's guiding, Marcus continues to complain about the shoddy tour, saying that they would've been better off going through the streets of New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Finally, the group comes up to what Shawn reveals as the house of the legendary Victor Crowley.

As he shines a spotlight on the shack, he mentions that one day, he was a deformed man who was hit in the head with a hatchet by his own father, who couldn't stand the sight of him and went nuts. Now he wanders the bayou searching for his daddy.

Some nights, he says, you can hear him calling for his daddy. Soon after, Shawn pretends to call out like Victor Crowley in the same fashion, and no one is amused by it. Marybeth explains that he's not telling the real story and that they didn't pass the real house and Shawn gets angry at her, whining that she should let him do his job. Soon after though, he continues at ease and turns down the lights to let the tour group see what he calls 'ghost lights'.

Although the group initially sees nothing on the surface of the bayou, soon enough the lights do appear, though both Marcus and Jim Permatteo explain that it's a chemical reaction over the bog water and the air. Shawn complains that they shouldn't have come and he turns on the lights, but when he does, a figure moves on the shore, and everyone gets spooked. They decide to head back, but Shawn accidentally gets the boat caught on some jagged rocks, and as it begins to pour rain, they all realize that the boat is sinking. Mr. Permatteo realizes that a nearby tree connects them with the shore and he attempts to cross the river, but a gator attacks his leg. While the group attempts to pull him back, Marybeth surprises everyone, drawing a gun and shooting at the creature.
6. Which character has a cell phone with him or her?

Answer: Misty

The group continues to shore although Misty is quite hesitant, saying she's too scared to go. Ben is able to convince her, however, and she, Marybeth, and Shapiro continue to cross the tree, that is until it snaps and they fall into the gator-infested water. Misty and Marybeth quickly race to shore, but Shapiro is more concerned with his amateur footage, and checks his camera.

It isn't until the group alerts him of the alligator behind him that he frantically reaches land. Everyone heads to a nearby clearing to rest and Jim sits down to tie a tourniquet around his wound. Marcus quickly asks why Marybeth has a pistol, but she turns to Shawn, asking why he's such a con artist.

He quickly explains that he's only done one other tour. He lives in Detroit, but his brother had him come to New Orleans, saying that he would make tons of money off swamp tours. Marybeth finally confesses.

She has a gun because she's looking for another boat. Her father and brother came into the bayou two days earlier hunting gators, but they haven't come home since. Since the police wouldn't help, she took the tour (rather than hiring her own boat) to investigate, but she has the gun since the woods aren't safe.

She explains that they need to leave as soon as possible, not only to save Jim, but to save themselves. Misty tries to call someone on her cell phone, but is unable to; she has no bars on her cell phone. The group asks her why she's so concerned, and she decides to tell them the story of Victor Crowley.
7. Who originally killed Victor Crowley?

Answer: His father

Victor Crowley, she begins, was a disfigured young boy loved only by his father, who, despite the horrible disfigurement, loved his son. On many occasions, Victor would be taunted by the other boys because of his deformities, and because of this he led a very sheltered life in his house with his father. One Halloween however, three teenagers tried to scare Victor out of his house while his father was in town, and to do this, they threw firecrackers at his front porch.

As Victor's father drove up to the front of the house, the door caught fire, and despite his efforts, he was unable to kick it open.

As a last resort, Mr. Crowley took a hatchet and attempted to break down the door, but he didn't know that Victor was leaning from the inside, and during one final thrust at the door, he accidentally hit his son in the face with the hatchet, killing him. Mr. Crowley lived in the house as a recluse for the last ten years of his life, before he finally died, but some say that Victor returned many years later as a spirit, and he calls for his father in the night. Shawn explains that they're fine as it is; they passed the house two miles earlier, and it was on the other side of the river. Marybeth opposes this though, pointing in the distance to show them that the Crowley house is right in front of them.

Although she says that they can continue for a few miles up the road to reach a way out of the bayou, but the road leads past the Crowley house. Mrs. Permatteo decides to take her husband up the path regardless, but as they all head towards the house, they hear a forlorn voice calling for his daddy. Everyone backs down, but Mrs. Permatteo drags her husband along and tells her husband that the Lord will help them. Soon though, Crowley appears in the doorway and chases the couple to the path, quickly using his hatchet to hack through from Mr. Permatteo's shoulder to his hip. Mrs. Permatteo tries to run as well, but he grabs hold of her skull, pulling back on her jaw and ripping backwards. Everyone scatters into the bayou while Marybeth takes a shot at Victor before running. He takes it in the chest and collapses while she flees.
8. Is Shapiro really a director?

Answer: No

Marybeth finds Ben, and the two of them come across Shawn, Jenna, and Misty hiding behind the bushes. Marcus, meanwhile, hides up in a tree while they talk about their options. Marcus lets them know that he thinks he can see downtown from his vantage point, but it's too far to travel. Jenna soon wonders where Shapiro is, and as it turns out, he's still running through the forest.

He drops his video camera in order to hide amongst the bushes. Meanwhile the rest of the group tries to keep quiet. Misty says that she dropped her phone along the way, so they can't even try to call for help anymore, and they group gets Marcus to descend from the tree. Shapiro, meanwhile, emerges from his hiding spot and runs directly into Victor Crowley, somehow having had survived the gunshot.

He makes short work of Shapiro, twisting his head in a circle and tearing it off. The rest of the group wanders through the bayou for a while, realizing that Crowley may have come back in his spiritual form reliving the night he died, and Marcus blames Shawn for their predicament. Before the two duke it out, Jenna finds Shapiro's camera bag, and upon opening it, they find a flashlight. Ben also finds his wallet, and they discover that Doug Shapiro was actually faking his job; he was actually a Samuel M. Barret, a senior marketing manager at a small company, and he had been posing as an amateur pornographic director in order to snag his own personal collection. Misty says that she's shocked, as it's the third time it's happened to her. Marcus gets angry about everything, and tells the group that if anyone has anymore secrets just to let them out or he'll kill them himself.

As he shines the light around, Jenna begins to cry, saying that she never went to NYU; it was her first choice, but she didn't get in, so she went elsewhere. Marybeth says that they don't have time for the drama, so they move on. Jenna complains that she was going to move to Hollywood to become famous, but now she's going to be killed with the rest of them. As Ben begins to reassure her that everything will be fine, he trips over Shapiro's corpse.
9. Whose lighter is used to set Crowley on fire?

Answer: Misty's

The group soon hears something nearby; Misty's phone. Soon, they find themselves following the Paula Cole ringtone ("I Don't Want to Wait") in order to have a chance at rescue, but when Misty finally nabs it, it's too late, the signal is lost once again.

As well, to make things worse, they're back in front of the Crowley house again, and Crowley is yelling for his daddy again. Marybeth and Ben decide to search the house for weapons since she only has a few bullets left in her gun, and the rest stay behind with the flashlight.

While in the shed, Marybeth is shocked to find her father and brother, both split in two, in the corner, and in the meantime, the other four are spooked by a shaking bush. While they wait in fear, Marcus decides to step up and look inside, and he is relieved to find a raccoon amongst the leaves.

As soon as this happens though, Crowley emerges from the bushes behind Jenna and takes a belt sander to her lower jaw, effectively mutilating her face. Ben and Marybeth return with a shovel and knock Crowley off Jenna, but they drop the weapon and run. Shawn takes the chance to grab the shovel and fight off Crowley, but Crowley gets a grip on the shovel as well, standing up and slicing off Shawn's leg.

As Shawn tumbles to the ground, Crowley uses the shovel to decapitate the tour guide, and then impale him. Before Jenna can crawl away, Crowley picks her up and impales her on the same shovel. The rest of the group flees through the forest only to come across Crowley again, but Ben is able to stick him with a pitchfork. They flee back to the house again, knowing that the only way they can stop him is if they continue to harm him. While Ben searches through the shed, Marybeth and Marcus stand back to back surveying each direction while Misty stands near the treeline. As time goes on though, Misty goes missing, and Ben finds her severed head thrown at him from the doorway...and then her torso. He douses Victor in gasoline while Marybeth sticks a spade into his head, and Ben uses Misty's lighter to set him ablaze. They realize that they may have won, but as it begins to rain and the water puts out the flames, they quickly run away, knowing that their time may be short.
10. How do the survivors finally kill Victor Crowley?

Answer: They don't.

The final three find their way through the bog to a cemetery, and they deduce that if they find their way around, there might be another entrance to the area. When they finally do find the gate, Crowley reappears, and although they reach the door, it's locked.

They manage to evade him until they hide behind a mausoleum, and Marcus is caught in Crowley's grasp. He gives Ben and Marybeth the chance to run as Crowley tears off his arms and throws him against the side of a grave. They escape out the original entrance and Ben ends up vomiting everywhere, saying that he can't go any further because Marcus was killed, but Marybeth urges him onwards until they find the river.

When they reach the water's edge, Crowley appears behind them and throws a spear from the metal cemetery fence at Ben and impales him in the foot.

While Crowley runs down the path to get them, Ben and Marybeth get the idea to push down the pole and they impale Crowley in the heart before he reaches them, causing him to stop in his tracks. Ben tears his foot free from the spear and they limp off to come across Marybeth's father's boat. As they push the boat out to the river, Marybeth ties her jacket around Ben's foot and cries over her lost family while Ben reassures her that it's all alright, since they lived and beat Crowley before he got to them.

But as he finishes saying this, she's pulled into the river from behind her, and she gets her shoelace caught on a branch. As she reaches upwards, she grabs onto Ben's arm and swims up only to find Victor Crowley in the boat, holding onto an arm ripped from Ben's body, who lays in the boat bleeding to death. While Crowley stares down into Marybeth's face, she screams.
