Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He may have survived the sinking of the Titanic, but Jack Dawson lost his life in the freezing water of the North Atlantic. Which actor, in arguably his most memorable role, played Jack in "Titanic" (1997)?

Answer: Leonardo DiCaprio

Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCapri) and his friend Fabrizio Di Rossi (Danny Nucci) win tickets onto Titanic moments before it's due to leave on its maiden voyage. On board, he saves the life of Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and the pair fall in love before disaster, in the form of an iceberg and Rose's fiancé, Cal Hockley, strikes to tear them apart.

"Titanic" (1997), written and directed by James Cameron, was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, winning 11 of them and justifying its (then) tag of most expensive movie ever made.
2. Which 1975 thriller, known for its theme music and ability to scare people out of entering the water, featured a boat-eating shark?

Answer: Jaws

Steven Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster thriller, "Jaws", won three Academy Awards and is still regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made. The music for the film, including the ominous theme whenever the shark was near, was composed by John Williams and won the Academy Award for Best Original Score.

In this movie, a killer shark is attacking people at a beach so Marine biologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfus) teams up with shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) to search for the rogue shark. They get more than they bargained for when confronted by the Great White Shark who attacks their boat, killing most of the people onboard. In the end it is up to police chief Brody (Roy Scheider), the sole survivor on the boat to kill the beast.

Despite being so obviously fake that most of its movie footage was scrapped, Bruce the mechanical shark was immortalized on the cover of "Time" magazine in 1975.
3. Which 1981 Wolfgang Peterson war movie, adapted from a Lothar-Günther Buchheim novel, features a German U-boat that attacks several British ships only to sink when it reaches a safe dock?

Answer: Das Boot

"Das Boot" (1981) centres on the crew of U-96 a German U-Boat and is told from the viewpoint of war correspondent Lt. Werner (Herbert Grönemeyer). It features several battles with Allied ships and planes but the submarine manages to make its way to a safe port where a raid sinks the boat and kills the captain (Jürgen Prochnow).

The film, which is hailed as one of the best German movies ever made, was nominated for six Academy Awards. Excess footage not used in the movie was used in a television miniseries and made into "A Director's Cut" DVD.
4. In the 1978 movie "Gray Lady Down", a surfaced submarine is struck in heavy fog by a freighter. The submarine, "Neptune", sinks and a rescue is launched. Which of these experimental submersibles is finally sent to rescue the crew?

Answer: Snark

David Greene directed this 1978 movie in which Commander Paul Blanchard (Charlton Heston) is trapped on board the Neptune after it sinks. The Navy rescue force, lead by Captain Bennett (Stacy Keach) is unable to reach the stricken sub with their Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV). The only hope of rescuing the trapped men is The Snark, a small, experimental submersible piloted by eccentric US Navy Captain Gates (David Carradine of "Kung Fu" fame).

The movie received average ratings with many people agreeing that the plot feels too predictable despite an abundance of suspense on board each of the vessels involved. Several comments reflected the feeling that it was "just another 1970 disaster movie". The actors, however, are often given full marks for their portrayals and the fact is frequently mentioned that this was the first film for Christopher Reeves.
5. Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman were the scourge of the seas In "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest". Who lost his life and his ship when Jones released the Kraken in this 2006 movie?

Answer: Captain Jack Sparrow

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) owes a debt of his soul and eternal slavery to Davy Jones, and Jones is calling in the debt in the second of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie series. He tries to trick Davy Jones into accepting Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) instead; however Jones releases the Kraken to claim both Sparrow and his ship, The Black Pearl.

This movie, directed by Gore Verbinski, was an immediate hit when it was released in 2006 and attracted four Academy Award nominations. Of the four, the movie won only the Best Visual Effects Oscar.
6. The 1958 movie "Run Silent, Run Deep", starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster, sees submarine Commander Richardson replaced by Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe. How did Richardson leave the vessel?

Answer: Buried at sea

This Robert Wise directed movie was based on Edward Beach's novel of the same name and is set in World War II, shortly after the Pearl Harbour bombing.

Richardson (Gable) is out for revenge against a Japanese Commander nicknamed Bungo Pete who caused his ship to sink and him to be injured. Tensions run high as Bledsoe, the executive officer, seethes with resentment because the submarine was not given to him to command.

After a battle with Bungo Pete, Richardson suffers a head injury and Bledsoe takes over command, enacting revenge for his commander before he succumbs to his injuries and is buried at sea.
7. Which 2000 disaster movie, starring George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg, was based on a Sebastian Junger book about the Andrea Gail?

Answer: The Perfect Storm

Directed by Wolfgang Petersen and released in June 2000, "The Perfect Storm" relates the predicament of The Andrea Gail, a sword fishing boat that capsized in a storm in 1997. In the movie the captain, William 'Billy' Tyne (Clooney), and Robert 'Bobby' Shatford (Wahlberg) perish when the boat is swamped by a rogue wave.

Despite the book receiving mixed reviews, the movie was a box office success and nominated for two Academy Awards. A law suit filed by the families of the people on board the real Andrea Gail for using their names without their permission was eventually dismissed in the Supreme Court in 2005.
8. Which 1960, black and white World War II film, starring Kenneth More and Dana Wynter, was adapted from a C. S. Forester novel?

Answer: Sink the Bismarck!

"Sink the Bismarck!" was adapted from C. S. Forester's "The Last Nine Days of the Bismarck" and director Lewis Gilbert garnered praise for the movie's historical accuracy.

During World War II, Captain Jonathon Shepard (More) and WREN second officer Anne Davis (Wynters) head the team assigned to stopping the German battleship Bismarck, which had been wreaking havoc on the British troops. A torpedo attack initially disables the ship, allowing other ships in the British force to finish the job of sinking it.
9. Which 1956 John Huston film adaptation of a Herman Melville classic tale starred Gregory Peck and Richard Baseheart?

Answer: Moby Dick

In Melville's epic tale "Moby Dick", Captain Ahab of the ship Pequod lost a leg to an albino whale called Moby Dick and spent the rest of his embittered life seeking revenge. He finally manages to harpoon the creature after it sinks the Pequod but drowns after becoming tangled in the ropes.

The movie was a financial disaster, running more than two million dollars over budget and alienating Gregory Peck (Ahab) and director John Huston. The story goes that Peck felt he was cast only to secure funding for the venture and was not happy with his own performance in the movie. So much so that when Steven Spielberg asked for permission to show parts of "Moby Dick" in his movie "Jaws", Peck refused.
10. Maureen McGovern had a hit when she released the theme song "The Morning After" in 1973. Which 1972 blockbuster adventure, starring Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine, featured this haunting song?

Answer: The Poseidon Adventure

Written by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn, "The Morning After" was recorded by Maureen McGovern the year after "The Poseidon Adventure" was released. While Nonnie (Carol Lynley) performs the song in the movie, it is not her voice that is heard. Instead, she lip-synchs to the vocals recorded by Renee Armand.

"The Poseidon Adventure" was directed by Ronald Neame and nominated for seven Academy Awards. The plot features a cruise liner capsized by a tsunami and centres on the struggles of passengers and crew to survive. With the ship floundering upside down, Reverend Scott (Hackman) and Detective Rogo (Borgnine) lead a small band of survivors to the rear of the ship where the hull is thinnest.

A sequel "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" was released in 1979, but like most sequels, it was a box office disaster.
