Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kissing someone special can leave you feeling upside down, and the movies are no exception. Which film features a classic upside down kiss between a masked hero and his ladylove?

Answer: Spiderman

Mild mannered Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) secretly has a crush on Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) from school, but he's not her type. After a radioactive spider bites him, Peter develops some of a spider's capabilities and assumes the name "Spiderman". He decides to fight crime in New York City after his Uncle is killed.
Later, he saves Mary Jane from a gang in a dark alley (of course) and he playfully hangs upside down from one of his webs. She then peels away the bottom half of his mask and kisses him passionately.
Spidey gets another upside down kiss in "Spiderman III" (2007), this time with Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard) after saving her from a runaway crane.
2. She's a gentle, well brought up female; he's the classic bad boy with a heart of gold. Out for dinner, they not only share a plate of spaghetti, they also share their first kiss. Which movie is this?

Answer: Lady and the Tramp

Who can forget the spaghetti meal shared by Lady the cocker spaniel, and Tramp, the bad boy mutt? As they are romantically serenaded at dinner, they both munch on a single noodle and accidentally kiss.
In this movie, Lady's world is turned upside down by the arrival of a new baby. While Tramp convinces her she's now unloved because of the baby, it's actually Aunt Sarah and her two sly Siamese cats who are causing the trouble. The happy ending comes though, and Tramp is adopted into the household.
3. Several weddings, an almost wedding, a death and a passionate kiss in the pouring rain between British Charles and American Carrie are featured in which 1994 film?

Answer: Four Weddings and a Funeral

"Four Weddings and a Funeral" (1994) featured Andie McDowell and Hugh Grant as the protagonists. Charles (Grant) meets Carrie (McDowell) at the first wedding in the show, and falls instantly in love with her. They meet again at the next wedding, that of Bernard and Lydia, where Carrie introduces her fiancé, Scottish politician, Hamish Banks.
After seeing Carrie married, Charles is despondent and in a moment of weakness, agrees to marry his ex-girlfriend Henrietta. During the wedding, he is stopped from making the biggest mistake of his life by his deaf brother David, and leaves Henrietta tragically at the altar.
Of course, love wins out in the end. Carrie has left her husband and goes to console Charles after his aborted nuptials. They agree to be together, not married, and Carrie kisses Charles in the middle of the street, in a heavy downpour.
4. Which 1957 movie, once voted the most romantic of all time, features broken engagements, a broken tryst atop the Empire State Building, and a kiss to mend broken hearts?

Answer: An Affair to Remember

In "An Affair to Remember" (1957), Nickie (Cary Grant) and Terry (Deborah Kerr) fall in love with each other while still engaged to other people. They both agree to ditch their fiancés, change their jobs and meet again after six months. On her way to the Empire State Building however, Terry is involved in an accident and is unable to keep the date. Eventually, Nickie learns the reason for her no-show, and all is forgiven.

While the American Film Institute regards "An Affair to Remember" as "one of the most romantic of all time" it's not an original film. In fact, the movie is almost a complete copy of an earlier film, "Love Affair" released in 1939.
5. You would not expect to find a passionate kissing scene in a comedic spoof of "Star Trek", but this film has one. Fred the engineer, and Thermian Laliari share a very close encounter, in which 1999 Dean Parisot directed film, which also stars Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver?

Answer: Galaxy Quest

"Galaxy Quest" (1999) is a spoof about once famous actors from a successful television series who are recruited by an alien race to defeat the evil Sarris. The Thermians are convinced the "Galaxy Quest" series are actual historical documents, and the crew real space adventurers. Laliari is one of the Thermians; Fred is the engineer from the series.

After saving the commander (Allen) from Gorignak the rock monster, Fred later digitally conveys Gorignak in amongst Sarris's henchmen. Excited, Laliari kisses Fred.

The heat of the moment causes her to partially regain her normal form, and she wraps Fred in her tentacles. They fall behind the digital conveyer, out of sight of the viewer, and this prompts Guy to say "Oh! THAT's not right!"
6. Sam plays the piano, Rick toasts Ilsa with his trademark "Here's looking at you, kid", and they kiss while gunfire rages outside. Which 1942 movie gave us this unforgettable smooch?

Answer: Casablanca

The 1942 classic "Casablanca" should need no introduction.
During World War II, nightclub owner Rick (Humphrey Bogart) is living in Casablanca. His ex-lover Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), and her husband Victor, need his help to escape to America. After he refuses, she wants to shoot him, but can't bring herself to, as she still loves him. The couple reconcile (albeit very briefly) and share a kiss as the war rages outside. Rick eventually gets Ilsa and Victor on a plane, while he goes to join the Free French Forces with the policeman Renault.
7. Who can forget Rhett pleading with Scarlett to "Kiss me, kiss me once"? Can you remember the movie?

Answer: Gone With the Wind

"Gone With the Wind" (1939) is one of my all-time favourite movies. After two wrong marriages, and the civil war wreaking havoc in the south, the spoilt Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) finally sees sense and marries Rhett Butler (Clark Gable). He's aware that she's really only marrying him so she can access his money to save the one thing that's dear to her: Tara. The marriage doesn't last however, and she vows to return to Tara, and start again. "After all, tomorrow is another day".
Every time I watch the movie I wish it ended differently, or that Scarlett woke up to herself sooner.
8. Tony and Maria's first kiss sparks a war between the Jets and the Sharks in which 1961 musical?

Answer: West Side Story

Very "Romeo and Juliet" in the forbidden love between Tony (Richard Beyner) and Maria (Natalie Wood), this is love at first sight across a crowded dance floor, and in true romantic style, they only have eyes for each other. The budding romance between the pair causes a cultural gang fight between the rival gangs the Jets and the Sharks. The sharks are a gang of Peurto Rican Americans, whose leader, Bernardo, is Maria's brother. Tony is a member of the Jets, who are white, working-class Americans. And in parallel with "Romeo and Juliet", "West Side Story" does not end happily.

"West Side Story" debuted as a stage production that ran for over seven hundred performances on Broadway. In London, it ran even longer.
The 1961 movie of "West Side Story" won ten of its eleven Oscar nominations, including the coveted "Best Picture".
9. While same sex kisses are not a new thing in the movies (think "Queen Christina" from 1933), the kiss between Ennis and Jack in 2007 won an online poll for the "Best screen kiss of all time". Which movie saw Ennis and Jack share this steamy reunion kiss?

Answer: Brokeback Mountain

Ennis (Heath Ledger) and Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) have an initial encounter during a lonely summer sheep-herding job. Four years later, both men are married, but when they meet again, they sneak a passionate kiss. Although both men love each other, Ennis is unwilling to live with Jack. His reason is that homosexual relationships are not only frowned upon, the participants are often the victims of bashings, torture and murder.

A 2007 online poll by European DVD company "LOVEFiLM" had the reunion kiss voted as best on-screen kiss ever". It also won an MTV award for "Best kiss" as well. Quite a smooch.
10. Joe Fox and Kathleen Kelly are business rivals, but form a close bond in the impersonal world of cyberspace. They eventually form a cautious friendship in the real world that blossoms into love. Which movie has the final scene of a kiss between Joe and Kathleen, and an impatient dog?

Answer: You've Got Mail

"You've Got Mail" stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in their third movie together. In this film Kathleen Kelly (Ryan) owns a small bookstore whose business is threatened by Joe Fox (Hanks) and his family-owned mega-chain bookstore. An animosity springs up between them, although neither of them realise that they are already online friends.

The 1998 movie is a remake of the 1940 film "Shop Around the Corner". This original film also spawned a musical in 1949 called "In the Good Old Summertime".

Hanks and Ryan had previously starred together in "Joe Versus the Volcano" (1990) and "Sleepless in Seattle" (1993).
