Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the three directors who worked on 'GWTW', which was the only one to receive screen credit?

Answer: Victor Fleming

George Cukor was involved in the production of 'GWTW' from day one. Known as a 'woman's director' because of his sensitivity and patience, he was adored by Vivien Leigh and Olivia de Havilland. Clark Gable, on the other hand, was uncomfortable with Cukor's homosexuality and sensitive approach, and insisted on a change. Sam Wood filled in while Victor Fleming took some time off. Cukor had filmed a lot of the scenes that appear in the movie, but made it clear that he did not want his name associated with the production.
2. 'GWTW''s director (the only one to receive screen credit), was delayed in his arrival on the set of 'GWTW' for the final scenes because he had to complete another film. Which one?

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

Victor Fleming's reaction to the 'GWTW' script was, 'There's no ... story here!' An old drinking buddy of Clark Gable's, he made instant enemies out of Leigh and de Havilland. His brand of sensitivity, when Leigh asked him how a scene of hers should be played, amounted to, 'Oh, just ham it up.'
3. Who designed the costumes for 'GWTW'?

Answer: Walter Plunkett

Borrowed from MGM, Plunkett designed 5,500 costume items for 'GWTW'. Noted for his expertise with historical costumes, he even had some of the cotton used in 'GWTW' gowns woven in a Pennsylvania mill that wove fabric prior to the Civil War. His efforts went unrecognized, because costume design was not a category honored by the Academy at the time.
4. Sadly, two 'GWTW' stars committed suicide in later years. One was Ona Munson, who played Belle Watling. Who was the other?

Answer: George Reeves

George Reeves, who played Stuart Tarleton and later TV's 'Superman', committed suicide in 1959.
5. All of these actresses were considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara. Whose screen test was considered 'too stiff and unprofessional'?

Answer: Susan Hayward

All of the actresses mentioned were tested for the role, but 19-year-old Hayward's screen test was judged 'too stiff and unprofessional'.
6. Vivien Leigh caused some anxious moments before and during filming. She arrived in California with her 'significant other'. The problem? It wasn't her husband. Who was it?

Answer: Laurence Olivier

Vivien Leigh left her husband and infant daughter to be with Olivier. He left his wife and son to be with Leigh. He made 'Wuthering Heights' while Leigh worked on 'GWTW'.
7. Who played Scarlett's younger sister, Carreen?

Answer: Ann Rutherford

Audiences were used to seeing Ann Rutherford as Polly Benedict in all of the 'Andy Hardy' movies with Mickey Rooney.
8. Another film tried to capture some of 'GWTW''s thunder a year before 'GWTW''s release, complete with hoop skirts, Southern accents and a main character patterned after Scarlett O'Hara. The film was 'Jezebel'. Who was its star?

Answer: Bette Davis

After being turned down for the role of Scarlett, Bette Davis had her revenge. The film was extremely successful and won Davis her second Oscar.
9. An actress named Marjorie Reynolds had a miniscule speaking part (one sentence) in 'GWTW' (the staircase scene with Scarlett and Melanie before the Twelve Oaks barbecue). She went on to great fame in a very popular early sitcom. Which one?

Answer: The Life of Riley

Marjory Reynolds was Peg to William Bendix's Riley in the long running series.
10. One of 'GWTW''s principal stars got married during filming. Which one?

Answer: Clark Gable

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard eloped on March 29, 1939 when Gable had two days off from filming. They ran off to Kingman, Arizona, with Gable's agent, spent {$.50} on flowers, and had the 'reception' in the agent's car munching on sandwiches and drinking coffee.
