In real life, Barbara O'Neil, who played Mrs. Ellen O'Hara, was a mere three years older than her on-screen daughter Scarlett (Vivien Leigh). Ellen was a dignified woman who kept order in her home and on the plantation with strong will and compassion. O'Neil made her film debut in 1937 in "Stella Dallas". Following "Gone With the Wind", Ms. O'Neil costarred in "All This, and Heaven Too" for which she received a nomination as Best Supporting Actress at the 1941 Academy Awards.
2. Butterfly McQueen

Thelma (Butterfly) McQueen began her career as a dancer. Her first attempt at acting was her role as Prissy, the young somewhat dim-witted O'Hara house slave. Martin was discovered in Louisiana by a Hollywood agent that was "Searching for Scarlett" and she indeed auditioned for the role of Scarlett.
She instead got the minor role of Cathleen and additionally she was Leigh's coach in southern dialect. She later starred in "West of Tombstone" and "The Man Who Returned to Life".
4. Jane Darwell

Mrs. Dolly Merriwether (Jane Darwell) was the self-appointed social monitor of Atlanta society and a thorn in the side of Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) for many years. Darwell appeared in over one hundred major films, as well as appearing on stage and television. Two of her noted works include "The Ox-Bow Incident" and "The Red Stallion". For her role as Ma Joad in "The Grapes of Wrath" she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (1941).
5. Ona Munson

Belle Watling, portrayed by Ona Munson, was a madam at a brothel in Atlanta. She admired Melanie Hamilton Wilkes (Olivia de Havilland) but did not like Scarlett (Vivien Leigh). She was a good friend of Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) both before and after his marriage to Scarlett. Munson appeared in "Idaho" in 1943 with Roy Rogers and Trigger.
She was in ill-health in her early fifties and took her own life with an overdose of barbiturates.

Producer David O. Selznick searched for nearly two years before he found his perfect Scarlett. On the first night of filming, as Atlanta burned on the back movie lot in Culver City, Selznick was introduced to Vivien Leigh, an English theatrical actress.
He had found his leading lady at last. She was cast shortly thereafter as Scarlett O'Hara, the strong-willed tempestuous Southern belle facing the hardships and horrors of a civil war. Miss Leigh won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for "GWTW" in 1940 and won again for Best Actress in 1951 for "A Streetcar Named Desire".
7. Ann Rutherford

Careen was the youngest of the O'Hara sisters. She was sweet, gentle and kind. Ann Rutherford played the part to perfection. Her screen popularity was established by portraying Andy Hardy's patient girlfriend Polly Benedict. She also starred in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "Whistling in Dixie".
8. Alicia Rhett

Alicia Rhett auditioned for the role of Melanie Hamilton but was ultimately cast as her sister-in-law, India Wilkes. This was another woman who found Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) quite despicable. Mrs. Meade, wife of the Dr. Meade (Harry Davenport) of Atlanta, was played by Leona Roberts. Mrs. Meade loved to gossip with her best friend Mrs. Merriwether (Jane Darwell) and at times seemed to be a quite gullible, much to the exasperation of the no-nonsense doctor husband. Roberts appeared in "Bringing Up Baby", "Of Human Hearts" and "The Blue Bird".
10. Cammie King

American child actress Cammie King played Bonnie Blue Butler, the only child of Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable). Bonnie tragically lost her life at an early age in a fall from her pony. King only appeared in one more movie, "Blondie Meets the Boss" (uncredited).
She also voiced the young doe Faline in "Bambi". She went on to have a successful career as a marketing coordinator.
11. Hattie McDaniel

Hattie McDaniel gave such a tremendous performance as the O'Hara house slave Mammy that she was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 1940 Academy Awards. In the history of the Academy she became the first African-American to win an award.
She continued her acting career but never again achieved the notoriety she garnered from "GWTW". She appeared in many films, oftentimes playing a domestic. Fans remember her as Beulah on "The Beulah Show".
12. Olivia de Havilland

Accomplished actress Olivia de Havilland played the gentle Melanie Wilkes (nee Hamilton). Her kindness, loyalty and caring made her well liked by all, except for Scarlett (Vivien Leigh), who found her to be foolish and weak. Despite her gentle nature Melanie was a highly practical woman. Ms. de Havilland was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 1940 Academy Awards.
She lost to Hattie McDaniel, who portrayed Mammy in "GWTW". She did however win two Oscars for Best Actress in a Leading Role for "To Each His Own" (1947) and "The Heiress" (1950).
13. Evelyn Keyes

Actress Evelyn Keyes portrayed Suellen, the middle O'Hara sister. Suellen was resentful of the war as her posh lifestyle changed so drastically. Her goal in life was to wed Frank Kennedy (Carroll Nye) and live happily ever after. Scarlett needed money to pay the taxes on Tara, so she stole Frank away from Suellen and married him for his money.
In 1955, Keyes played the part of Helen Sherman, wife of Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell) in "The Seven Year Itch" with Marilyn Monroe.
14. Isabel Jewell

Considered "poor, white trash" by the O'Hara family and their slaves, Emmy Slattery (Isabel Jewell) was the mistress and later wife of Tara's overseer Jonas Wilkerson (Victor Jory). After the war, she had a grand desire to live at Tara, so she and Jonas tried to buy the great plantation for owed taxes. Jewell appeared in "Northwest Passage" with Spencer Tracy and Robert Young.
15. Laura Hope Crews

Oftentimes in need of smelling salts, dear old Aunt Pittipat Hamilton of Atlanta, was a high-strung childlike woman with whom Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) and Melanie Hamilton Wilkes (Olivia de Havilland) resided during part of the Civil War. She so often despaired about being Scarlett's chaperone. Crews began her acting career in the silent film "The Fighting Hope" (1915) and later appeared in sound films such as "Her Master's Voice" and "Girl from Avenue A".
