Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what city did the story take place?

Answer: Paris

It takes place in the Paris Opera House. Gaston Leroux, the author of the novel "The Phantom of the Opera", wrote a report about the actual Paris Opera House in a way that made the audience almost believe that it really was the retelling of a true story. Also, the first scene of the movie starts off as a black and white photograph of the Paris Opera House and it tells you that the setting is Paris.
2. Christine's father used to tell her and Raoul stories, one of which was about a girl who resembled Christine and who would hear the Angel of Music in her head at night in her bed. Raoul sometimes calls her by the name of the girl in the story. Who is it?

Answer: Little Lotte

Having not actually seen the Broadway play, I only know that there was an actual "Little Lotte" song from my friend who has the Broadway album, and she complained about it being spoken. So I cannot tell you whether or not the lyrics and dialogue are the same.
3. Does the Phantom kill Joseph Buquet?

Answer: Yes

He kills him with his "magical lasso". In the novel it was called the Punjab lasso, and there was more emphasis on it. There wasn't enough fear of the Phantom's skill with the lasso in the movie. Joseph Buquet was the stage hand who was too interested in the mystery of the Opera Ghost.

He was the one telling the stories about the Phantom and the lasso, and when he tried to follow the Phantom during "Il Muto" the Phantom caught him with the lasso and hung him over the stage during the ballet. In the book, this is the moment where the chandelier crashes, and Buquet was discovered earlier on in the third cellar near the lake.
4. How does the Phantom sign his letters?

Answer: O. G.

Andre and Firmin, the new owners of the Paris Opera House, think they are going crazy when notes signed "O. G." (Opera Ghost) start showing up everywhere telling them how to run the Opera and demanding money.
5. Madame Giry says several times to do what with your hands?

Answer: Keep it at the level of your eyes.

The Phantom is known to lasso a noose around his victims, and as long as you keep your hand at the level of your eyes, you can save your self from being strangled because he would not only lasso your neck but your hand, and you could get free. Madame Giry tries to warn those she fears might be in danger of the Phantom's lasso even though she has a weakness in her heart for him.
6. How many months did the Phantom leave everyone alone? This would be the time period between "All I Ask of You" and "Masquerade".

Answer: 3 months

During "Masquerade" Andre and Firmin say something about how things have been peaceful for 3 months, and the "ghost" has been unheard of for that time. He finishes "Don Juan Triumphant", his masterpiece of an Opera score, in this time.
7. What is the name of the Opera that the Phantom writes?

Answer: Don Juan Triumphant

He casts Christine as the lead, and enters the play himself, for in his Opera he is Don Juan and it is about his and Christine's "love triumphant" (or so it was explained in the novel). This is also the production where Christine and the Phantom sing "The Point of No Return"; such a seductive little song. I love it! In the movie the actual score only has "Don Juan" written on it, but when he presents it to the owners in "Why So Silent" he actually sings "I have written you an Opera; here I brought the finished score, 'Don Juan Triumphant'".
8. Why doesn't Raoul kill the Phantom in the cemetery?

Answer: Christine stops him

Christine tells Raoul that it wasn't the way for him to die. This also shows that she has some feelings for him.
9. Who provides the singing voice for La Carlotta?

Answer: Margaret Preece

Minnie Driver does actually sing over the ending credits, and on the soundtrack. It is a song Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote especially for her called "Learn to be Lonely", and it was nominated for a Golden Globe for "Best Original Song". Minnie Driver's singing voice was dubbed because Carlotta needed to sound like an actual Opera singer, and Minnie could not reach some of the notes.
10. In this version of "The Phantom of the Opera" the chandelier crashes down at the end of which song?

Answer: The Point of No Return

In the book, and in most versions of the story, the chandelier falls after Carlotta's croaking fit ("Poor Fool, He Makes Me Laugh"). In the book the Phantom tells Firmin and Armand (in the movie it was Firmin and Andre) that "Carlotta sings to bring the chandelier down".

They saved it until the end of this production for artistic purposes I guess. The movie starts when they raise it up, and the story comes to a close shortly after it falls.
11. Fill in the missing song lyric: "Look at your face in the _______; I am there inside!"

Answer: Mirror

The Phantom sings this song and lures Christine to his lair. This is from the song "The Mirror", and leads right into the song "The Phantom of the Opera". It is not too far into the movie (maybe 20 minutes into it), and is the first time Christine sees that "the voice" is a flesh and blood man. This is arguably the most visibly beautiful sequence in the movie.
12. Fill in the missing song lyric: "This face which earned a mother's fear and loathing. A mask, my first unfeeling scrap of clothing. ____ comes too late. Turn around and face your fate. An eternity of this before your eyes."

Answer: Pity

The Phantom needs some lovin'. Makes me wish I was Christine so the story would end differently, but who cares about me? This had to be one of the more emotional moments of the film. it was sung during the last 15 minutes of the film, after he snatches Christine and forces her back to his lair and into the wedding gown he has for her.

This is also true to the novel in which the Phantom tells Christine that his mother would not let him kiss her forehead as a son would kiss his mother, and that the first gift he ever received from her was a mask.

But then, you have to remember that Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom is a glorified version; the novel's Phantom looked and smelled like a corpse (and he had to wear a fake nose if he wanted to pass unnoticed in the towns).
13. In which song does Christine sing the following line: "Angel or father, friend or Phantom."

Answer: "Wandering Child" (In the cemetery)

The Phantom was originally playing the part of the Angel of Music from her childhood fairy tales told by her father, but in the cemetery he goes as far as to let her begin to suspect he is her dead father. He sings "Wandering Child" as if singing to a daughter instead of his love. One line is "Too long you've wandered in winter; far from my fathering gaze".
14. What is the Phantom's line which follows the following: "Those who have seen your face draw back in fear. I am the mask you wear..."

Answer: It's me they hear

This is from the song "The Phantom of the Opera". The movie version cuts a whole verse out of the original song, but this does not detract from the song because it sounds wonderful, and Emmy Rossum (Christine) can hit some really high notes beautifully. It is sang during the journey from Christine's dressing room to the Phantom's lair.
15. Why does Raoul disappear when the Phantom makes his grand entrance at the Masquerade?

Answer: To get his sword

In the book the characters have pistols, but in this version they have swords which, in my opinion, makes it more visually stunning (especially in the sword fight scene in the cemetery). Raoul gets his sword because he plans on fighting for Christine.
