Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did Andre and Firmin come to the Opera Populaire?

Answer: They were taking over the opera from M. Lefevre.

Andre and Firmin had already bought the Opera Populaire and Lefevre was introducing them to the company. Apparently, the stress brought on by catering to the opera ghost's demands was too great for Lefevre, so he decided to go to Australia and sell the opera to Andre and Firmin.
2. Why were Firmin and Andre going to cancel the gala performance of "Hannibal" after Carlotta stormed off?

Answer: There was no understudy for Carlotta.

It was implied that Carlotta was such a big star, and such a big diva, that she wouldn't allow an understudy. So, after she stormed off in a fit of rage (taking Piangi with her), that left the managers with no one who knew the part of Elissa. Or so they thought!
3. How did Raoul end up getting locked out of Christine's dressing room?

Answer: He'd left to give her time to change and to get his hat.

Christine tried to tell him that she couldn't go to supper with him, but Raoul persisted. He left and while he was gone, a hand (we later find out it was the Phantom) locked the door and took away the key. Raoul came back after fetching his hat, but the door was locked.
4. How did Meg find the tunnel behind the mirror in the dressing room?

Answer: The Phantom didn't close the mirror completely after taking Christine.

Meg had gone into the dressing room looking for Christine. The dressing room was dark, but she happened to see that the mirror was slid open slightly. Meg pushed it open a bit more, and walked through it into the tunnel that was filled with rats and cobwebs (not at all how it appeared through Christine's eyes).

But unfortunately for Meg, her mother caught her in the tunnel and took her out before she could explore further.
5. Why did the managers give Carlotta a black poodle?

Answer: They wanted to get her to change her mind about leaving the Opera Populaire for good.

The Phantom's notes hadn't really frightened Carlotta at all. The first note she received merely annoyed her, by thinking that the Vicomte had the gall to insult her by replacing Carlotta with Christine. The second note didn't frighten her either, as she launched into a tirade directed at the managers, saying that they didn't appreciate her talent (because they wanted Christine to sing instead of her), that they didn't love her, they had rebuked her, etc.

In order to appease their diva, so there would be a soprano who could sing on stage (and because Miss Daae was still nowhere in sight), the managers were shown giving Carlotta gift after gift.

They were trying to convince her to stay at the opera and that her talent truly was appreciated.
6. Why did Carlotta run off the stage during the performance of "Il Muto"?

Answer: She croaked like a toad.

The Phantom had switched Carlotta's atomizer bottle. When he caused a disturbance, Carlotta used that time to spray her throat with the bottle provided by the Phantom. However, when she began singing again, she had lost her voice and could only emit a croaking noise akin to a toad. (Carlotta had called Christine a toad only moments earlier.)
7. What caused the Phantom to declare "you will curse the day you did not do"?

Answer: He caught Christine and Raoul professing their love for one another.

Christine and Raoul were up on the roof of the opera house (after Buquet's body had been found) and they sang "All I Ask of You" where they professed their love for one another. But they didn't know that the Phantom was hiding in the angel and overheard.

Hearing that Christine was planning on singing the performance of "Il Muto", and then leaving straight away with Raoul, the Phantom decided they would wish they had did all the Phantom had asked of them. There wasn't a plan to capture the Phantom until after the masquerade ball when Raoul decided (with the managers) to put Christine in the leading role, as the Phantom wished, in an effort to draw him to the performance where they would be able to capture him.
8. How was the Phantom able to find Christine at the graveyard?

Answer: He knocked out the original carriage driver and drove the carriage himself.

Raoul was the one who followed on horseback. He woke up to find Christine missing from her bed at the opera house. When he looked out the window, he saw the carriage leaving. Knowing it was most likely Christine, he ran down, took a horse and rode it (bareback) to the cemetery, where he caught up with Christine who was entranced by the Phantom's voice.
9. Why was Carlotta screaming after the Phantom took Christine at the end of "Point of No Return"?

Answer: Piangi had been found murdered.

This was the one point in the movie where the audience truly saws some emotion for someone besides herself in Carlotta's personality. It turned out that Piangi wasn't just a lapdog for her, when the camera last photographed her, she was seen weeping over his lifeless body.
10. Why did the Phantom let Christine and Raoul ultimately leave his lair?

Answer: All of these.

Christine fought for Raoul's life because she loved him so much. While Raoul was pleading with Christine to leave, because it didn't matter if the Phantom killed him, as long as Christine was free. Finally, Christine walked slowly to the Phantom, as her dress literally floated in the water around her, and kissed him on the lips, putting her arms on him, showing him pity.

But just after the Phantom and Christine parted, the mob could be heard in the background. The Phantom freed Raoul and told the young couple to take the boat and leave, to forget all they'd seen there.

After the two had left, the Phantom disappeared, leaving only his mask behind, to be found by Meg.
