After the success of "Hannibal", Christine is left alone in her dressing room. Here the Phantom reveals himself to her for the first time when he appears in her mirror. He proceeds to lead her down to the great underground lake where he lives. Once they are there, the Phantom begins his song "The Music of the Night" in which he describes both his passion for music and Christine.

But in spite of what they have just heard and seen, Raoul still refuses to believe that the Phantom is real and in this scene he tries repeatedly to assure Christine that she is perfectly safe, and that he will always be there to protect her.

On the roof Christine continues to worry, so Raoul breaks into the song "All I Ask of You" in which he declares his love for her and asks her to let him provide all the things she needs in her life. It is during this song that Christine finally gives in and she and Raoul share a kiss, unaware that the Phantom is hiding behind a statue and has heard and seen everything.
