Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did much of the scene for "Angel of Music" (with Christine and Meg) take place?

Answer: Chapel

In the musical, this scene takes place in Christine's dressing room. But for the movie, they built a chapel set that would be used for "Angel of Music" and "Twisted Every Way". The chapel is where Christine would go to light a candle in memory of her father.
2. What breed of dog did Carlotta own?

Answer: Poodle

She originally had a white Poodle that had pink ribbons in its hair. During "Prima Donna", the managers give her a black one. During the rehearsal for "Hannibal", Carlotta has one of her maids holding the dog onstage nearby.
3. Raoul and the Phantom have a swordfight in the movie directly after what song?

Answer: Wandering Child

Raoul raced after Christine and the Phantom as they went to Christine's father's grave. When he saw that the Phantom was trying to get Christine to come to him by opening her father's crypt, he drew his sword and the fight ensured. Raoul won and was about to kill the Phantom, but Christine stopped him. Too bad, had Raoul killed the Phantom at that point, Piangi would still have lived.
4. Which actor did not do their own singing for their character?

Answer: Minnie Driver

Margaret Preece sang the role of Carlotta, although Minnie Driver did contribute the song played during the end credits of the movie. Ms. Preece played the role of Carlotta in the London production of the show.
5. Whose part was NOT cut in the transition from musical to movie?

Answer: Passirino

Passirino's scene was kept intact - he is seen right before "Point of No Return" as Don Juan's helper. Mme Firmin doesn't exist in the movie (or, if she does, we never see her). Don Attilio is played by Piangi (a tenor) during "Il Muto", a bass played the part in the musical and Piangi was offstage watching. (He runs onstage to help escort Carlotta off after she croaks - you can see him still in his street clothes.) And the Inkeeper's Wife doesn't exist right before "Point of No Return" - the only people are Carlotta and the chorus, there is no solo part.
6. What color is the horse the Phantom uses in the cemetery?

Answer: Black

Raoul's horse, as he races to the graveyard, is white. This is most likely to reinforce that Raoul is good and the Phantom is bad.
7. What does the Phantom have Mme Giry give to Christine after the gala?

Answer: A red rose with a black ribbon tied around it

She brings a rose with her to the roof after Buquet is killed. As Raoul and Christine sing their duet ("All I Ask of You"), she drops the bouquet in the snow. The Phantom picks it up and crushes the rose in his hand.
8. Who brought Christine to the Opera Populaire?

Answer: Mme Giry

Mme Giry brought her to the opera after her father died. It's not said how Mme Giry knew Christine, but Mme Giry says during the rehearsal for "Hannibal" that she thinks of Christine as her own daughter.
9. During the transition from "Notes" to "Prima Donna", what does a member of the crowd ask of Carlotta?

Answer: Deliver a something to Miss Daae

Carlotta opens the door to leave the opera and the crowd turns and starts surging towards her. A man waved something towards her and asked if she could see that Miss Daae received it. That's when the managers begin singing "Prima Donna" to try and make her feel better (in addition to giving her many gifts).
10. Did anyone (besides Christine) notice that the Phantom had taken Piangi's place for "Point of No Return"?

Answer: Yes

The managers bring a guard into their box to try and get a good view to shoot and Mme Giry looks frightened as she realises what was going on. Now why more people didn't notice is a bit odd - Piangi was a much larger person and had a goatee! In the musical, the 'switch' is much less apparent as the Phantom and Piangi wear a cloak that covers the face. And because it was very apparent that the Phantom had taken Piangi's place, why didn't anyone wonder where Piangi was?
