This has been a long time in coming. A quiz about this witty, light-hearted, sorta-anachronistic Clint Eastwood WWII movie that gave me my Fun Trivia name. There are definitely some spoilers here, but otherwise, enjoy.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what country was 'Kelly's Heroes' filmed?

Answer: Yugoslavia

Filming was mostly in the current countries of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia. It was imperative for the crew to film here in 1970, the Yugoslav army still had a vast supply of WWII-era Sherman tanks that were used in the movie. As for the German Tiger tanks, they were modified Soviet T-34's.
2. During the course of the film, it is revealed that the lead character, Kelly (Eastwood), was demoted from Lieutenant to Private for doing what?

Answer: Attacking the wrong hill

Crapgame (Don Rickles) tells Oddball (Donald Sutherland) that troops under Kelly's command followed their orders, but accidentally 'wiped out a half a company of G.I.'s. Somebody had to get the blame and he got picked'. Kelly, like Oddball, doesn't like officers.
3. Telly Savalas plays the tough, but lovable Master Sergeant 'Big Joe', to avoid confusion with one of the underlings, 'Little Joe'. What actor played 'Little Joe'?

Answer: Stuart Margolin

Margolin got his big break in television, most notably playing opposite James Garner in 'The Rockford Files' as Evelyn 'Angel' Martin. He also played in two separate episodes of the TV series 'M*A*S*H'. MacLeod (Moriarty) is best known as either Murray Slaughter from 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' or Captain Merrill Stubing from 'The Love Boat'. Stanton (Pvt. Willard) is an accomplished actor with roles in such films as 'Alien' and 'The Green Mile', among a slew of others. O'Connor, who plays General Colt, is best known from the TV series, 'All In The Family'.
4. At the start of the movie, Kelly is able to kidnap a German intelligence officer, Col. Dunkhepf (David Hurst), for interrogation. What does Big Joe want to know from the Colonel?

Answer: Where are the best hotels?

Big Joe learns from Dumpkopff the nearest town of Nancy (in French Lorraine) has a three-star hotel, but Kelly spies something of more interest. A supposed lead bar in the Colonel's attache case reveals a gold layer underneath. After plying Dunkhepf with brandy, Kelly learns there are 14,000 more bars (about $16 million U.S. dollars) in a bank in Clermont, 30 miles behind enemy lines.
5. Kelly has decided to go after the gold. Who does he see in regards to getting the latest aerial surveillance photos, ammunition and enough rations to stay in the field for three days?

Answer: Crapgame

The wheeler-dealer Staff Sgt. Crapgame is played superbly by the legendary 'Mr. Warmth', comedian Don Rickles. This is also where Kelly runs into proto-hippie tank commander Oddball (Donald Sutherland).
6. As Oddball tries to sell Kelly on the advantages of armor support in his endeavor, which of the following is NOT one of the modifications made on the Sherman tanks by his mechanical whiz, Moriarty?

Answer: Thicker armor

The Sherman cannon is an ordinary 76-mm, but with the added piping, the Germans think it's a 90-mm gun. The loudspeakers are used to calm the tank crew when they go into battle. The paint shells make 'pretty pictures' but scares most enemy troops out of a fight.

While the armor on the tank is not modified, Moriarty has goosed the engines to make them the fastest in the European theater of operations. Oddball feels it's important to get out of trouble faster than they got in.
7. Despite Oddball's confidence in Moriarty's mechanical genius, there is one flaw Moriarty has that irritates Oddball to no end. What is it?

Answer: Negative waves

At several points in the movie, Oddball is lambasting Moriarty with lines like, 'Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?'
Moriarty usually replies, 'Crap'.
8. While all the planning with Kelly and the bank heist is going on, where is Kelly's commanding officer, Capt. Maitland?

Answer: He's looting a yacht to Paris

Maitland (played by Hal Buckley) is General Colt's nephew, trying to get in on some of the action. Maitland is taking three days off and has little or no interest in his men's well being, as long as they fight when ordered. Because of this laissez-faire attitude, it's no problem for Kelly to convince the rest of the squad to get in on the caper.
9. In order for Kelly, Big Joe and the crew to get through the German defenses, they need a mortar barrage from whom, who 'has never been on target and never been on time'?

Answer: Mulligan

Artillery 1st Sgt. Mulligan is notorious for launching barrages all around his own troops without warning. Kelly, however, persuades him (with the use of a gold bar) to launch one more attack that they have to drive through. Actor George Savalas, who played Mulligan, is not only Telly's younger brother, but had a recurring role in Telly's TV series 'Kojak' three years later.
10. It seemed that no sooner did Kelly and the gang get behind enemy lines, they were set upon by what?

Answer: One of their own fighters

Being behind enemy lines, the U.S. fighter obviously mistook them for the enemy and blew up all of the vehicles they had. This forced the men to spend a good part of the trip on foot.
11. While Kelly and Big Joe were working their way to Clermont, Oddball's Shermans hit a German railway station. Who was singing over the speakers as the carnage commenced?

Answer: Hank Williams, Jr.

Hank Jr.'s, 'All For The Love Of Sunshine' (with the Mike Curb Congregation) was a country hit in the U.S. 1969. That would put it on time for the movie soundtrack, but about 25 years too late for World War II. However, someone apparently liked the idea. This scenario would play out a few years later, this time with helicopters and Wagner's 'Ride of the Valkyrie' in 'Apocalypse Now'.
12. I'll say this for Oddball...crazy as he is, he had the presence of mind to get hold of Sgt. Bellamy (Len Lesser) to build a bridge where there was none. What unlikely group did Bellamy have to employ to get the materials to the river.

Answer: A military band

Of course, faced with the prospect of splitting the gold with over a hundred new troops, Kelly and his gang will have to move fast to beat them to Clermont.
You may not know the name Len Lesser, but you can't forget his face. He was part of two great sitcoms, 'Seinfeld' (as Uncle Leo) and 'Everybody Loves Raymond' (as Garvin).
13. Kelly and the group have finally made it to Clermont, where a squad of three German Tiger tanks are guarding the bank. According to Oddball, Tigers are pretty much invulnerable, but they do have an Achilles' heel, or weak spot. Where is it?

Answer: The rear of the tank

Oddball tells Kelly there's only one place to hit a Tiger...in the back at point blank range. One thing working in their favor is the Tiger is an open country vehicle, and the confines of Clermont will give them very little room to maneuver, giving Oddball's one remaining Sherman the edge.
14. After taking care of two of the Tiger tanks in Clermont, the last remaining tank is firmly entrenched in the town square, in front of the bank and firing at anything that moves. The Sherman is down for repairs and everyone is at a loss as to how to move the Tiger from the square. Who comes up with the solution?

Answer: Crapgame

Crapgame, recovering from getting hit by flying debris from the Tiger, suggests to Big Joe to make a deal, saying, 'Maybe he's a Republican'. Kelly, Oddball and Big Joe approach the tank and inform the German officer (Karl-Otto Alberty) about the gold, something he apparently didn't know. One last shot from the Tiger and the bank doors are blasted open for Kelly and the crew (now including its newest member, the German officer).
15. As the gang is loading up the gold, and the town is celebrating their apparent liberation, a lookout tells Kelly that General Colt, Sgt. Bellamy, Capt. Maitland and the rest of the Army is coming up the road. In order to make their getaway, what does Big Joe do?

Answer: Tells the mayor that Charles de Gaulle is coming into the town

Big Joe convinces the mayor that de Gaulle is coming up the road. This sets the people into a fervor to see their national hero (Colt, of course, has no clue and is basking in all the glory). Finally, Capt. Maitland makes his way to the bank, only find a drawing of a little man (the famous Kilroy) and the phrase 'Up yours, baby!'.
