Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. No matter how many times I watch the movie, the ship still sinks. In which Hollywood blockbuster did Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio share a snog on the starboard bow?

Answer: Titanic

"Titanic" scored an impressive 11 Academy Awards in 1998. Winslet and DiCaprio were at the centre of a love story on the doomed liner. Winslet played Rose, an upper class passenger, who boarded the liner with her mother and fiance. There she met Jack, played by DiCaprio, a small-time drifter and artist who had won a third-class ticket on the ship. Rose was on her way to Canada marry a rich fiancé, a prospect she was not keen on.

She contemplated suicide, but was rescued by Jack, who was then invited to join her family group. Of course they fell in love, but did they survive the sinking of the ship?...you'll have to watch the movie to find out.
2. Which 1961 movie featured a kiss in the rain between Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, in a production that left the man who created it fuming, if not steaming?

Answer: Breakfast At Tiffany's

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" was based on a novella by Truman Capote. He did not mince his words when asked what he had hated about the movie: 'Oh God, just everything. It made me want to throw up."
The film was the story of an elegant New York girl, Hepburn, and her relationship with a new man in her life, Peppard.
Hepburn played Holly Golightly, a New York party girl. Her materialistic world changed when a new neighbour, a struggling writer played by Peppard, moved into her apartment block. Romance followed, and the movie focused on how Peppard would, or even could, support Golightly and her love of all things fine and costly, in particular the wares on sale at the expensive jeweller's, Tiffany's.
3. You know what it's like when you share a plateful of spaghetti and the two of you slurp up the same strand only to meet in the middle? In which of these movies was that a prelude to a loving kiss?

Answer: Lady and the Tramp

The 1955 Disney animated movie was a love affair between a well bred American Cocker Spaniel and a stray mutt.
All was fine and dandy in Lady's world until her owners had a baby. An aunt came to help, bringing with her two Siamese cats, and suddenly Lady's world was turned upside down. Tied outside, she was rescued by Tramp and they ran off together - only for them both to be swept up by the dog catcher. More adventures followed and Tramp needed to be at his ingenious best. Was there a happy ending? Silly question. This was a Disney movie after all...
4. I love you, no, wait I hate you: but tomorrow it will be different again. In which movie did Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh share a romantic kiss?

Answer: Gone With The Wind

Made in 1939 and set in the southern states a century before, "Gone With The Wind" was nominated for 13 Oscars and won eight. It was the troubled love affair between a spoiled daughter of a plantation owner and a dashing beau. Set during and after the American Civil War, Leigh played Scarlett O'Hara, whose plantation home was overrun by the Union Army.

The focus turned to her struggle to rebuild her home, known as Tara, and keep it out of the hands of creditors. She set her sights of Rhett Butler, played by Clark Gable, as a dashing saviour of her fortunes.

They married, but did they live happily ever after? - "frankly, my dear I don't give a damn."
5. The surf crashes upon a Pacific beach and a man and a woman clinch together in true love on the sand. Which of these featured one of the longest on-screen kisses in movie history?

Answer: From Here To Eternity

"From Here To Eternity" won eight of the 13 Oscars for which it was nominated in 1953. Sadly there was no Oscar for Best Kissing Scene for Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr - or any win, even though both were nominated. This was a love triangle story set on the island of Oahu, before Pearl Harbor. Frank Sinatra and Montgomery Clift also starred. Clift played an amateur boxer determined he did not want to fight anymore, only to face pressure from a captain, played by Philip Ober, and other NCOs That pressure led to the death of a friend of the private, who began to seek revenge. Meanwhile the captain's wife, Kerr, began a romance with a sergeant played by Lancaster.
6. Well, nobody's perfect, but a kiss between Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis was memorable in a tale of cross-dressing mafia escapers. In which of these movies did it occur?

Answer: Some Like It Hot

If you were paying attention you will have noticed that the first three words of the question were the last line of the 1959 comedy. Curtis and Jack Lemon played a couple of musicians who dressed up as women in an all-girl band to flee from The Mob. Monroe was possibly the best known screen ukulele player since George Formby (What? - you want an apology for that well crafted one-liner?)
7. You must remember this, a kiss is just a kiss, but it is better when two real people are involved. Which movie provided the girl half of the couple and special effects to add a dead lover?

Answer: Ghost

Demi Moore puckered up to a computer-generated Patrick Swayze in the 1990 movie. It was the tale of a young woman who relies on help from the ghost of her dead lover when threatened by his murderer.
As a ghost, Swayze could only communicate with his widow through a psychic, played by Whoopi Goldberg, who helped pass on messages that would keep her free from danger.
8. "You don't close your eyes any more when I kiss your lips..." How can he tell - he was upside down at the time? In which movie was Tobey Maguire hanging by a thread in a clinch with Kirstin Dunst?

Answer: Spider-Man

It all occurred in a downpour as well. The 2002 movie was one of a number that brought the superhero Spider Man to live action. The romance came amid an investigation by Maguire to find a relative's murderer.
Maguire played an easy-mannered student who was bitten by a genetically-modified spider. This gave him super powers to fight evil.
Dunst played a woman who had a crush on Spider-Man. She and a tram car of children were held hostage by an arch-enemy, Green Goblin (played by William Dafoe). Spider-Man went to the rescue and an intense fight followed. Only one walked away.
9. It is a love that, at one time, would have been unthinkable in Hollywood. In which movie did Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger share a kiss, man-to-man?

Answer: Brokeback Mountain

The 2005 movie broke a few rules and cast doubts on more than a few best-buddy-of-the-wild-west stereotypes. The kiss was voted 'The Best Screen Kiss Of All Time' in an online poll.
Gyllenhaal and Ledger played sheep herders who met when they got a job with the same employer. Their easy friendship turned into something deeper, feelings of affection. That connection was short-lived and they parted, only to meet several years later. Their friendship was renewed, but was to end in tragedy, as you can discover for yourself by watching the movie.
10. You know what it's like when someone cold calls you on the phone and wants to tell two people at one time the great offer he has? Well, Jimmy Stewart had that moment and decided that sharing a kiss with Donna Reed was better than talking about some get-rich plan. In which movie did this tender moment occur?

Answer: It's A Wonderful Life

Made in 1946, "It's A Wonderful Life" is bound to be found on a television channel near you any Christmas. It was the tale a man contemplating committing suicide (Stewart) who is visited by a guardian angel, played by Henry Travers. The 'angel' shows the man all the lives he has helped in his small community.

The scene referred to in the question came at a time in the plot when Stewart's character gave up on his intention not to get romantically involved with Reed.
