Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1946), drifter John Garfield and unhappy wife Lana Turner conspire to murder her businessman husband. In what type of business are these three characters involved?

Answer: Roadside diner

Soon after Frank Chambers (John Garfield) is hired to help with Nick Smith's (Cecil Kellaway) roadside diner and service station, it's clear that he and Smith's wife Clara (Lana Turner) are heading down the road toward an illicit love affair and murder.

While the 1946 film version James M. Cain's 1936 novel is the best known, two previous film adaptations had already been made in France (1939) and Italy (1943). Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange also played the scheming lovers in 1981, but the film was received poorly by critics who compared it unfavorably to the 1946 version.
2. In one of the great noire films of all time, "Double Indemnity" (1944), femme fatale Barbara Stanwyck ensnares hapless Fred MacMurray in an insurance / murder scam. Which Romanian born actor, playing the role of an insurance adjuster, uncovers their devious plot?

Answer: Edward G. Robinson

Born Emanuel Goldenberg in 1893, Robinson emigrated to the United States in 1904. He is perhaps best remembered as the heavy in films like "Little Caesar" and "Key Largo".
3. In Stephen Frears' 1988 adaptation of "Dangerous Liaisons", Glenn Close and John Malkovich play cat and mouse games with a chaste and devout Michelle Pfeiffer. By what name is the rakish viscount played by Malkovich in this tale known?

Answer: Valmont

Adapted from the 1782 French novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" by Choderlos de Laclos, Frears' version was released less than a year before Milos Forman's "Valmont" starring Colin Firth and Meg Tilly as the conniving aristocrats. Most critics preferred Frears' offering, citing the wit and charisma of the lead players.
4. A jaded and experienced Ann Bancroft seduces the young Dustin Hoffman in "The Graduate" (1967). Which actress played the third side of this May-December triangle?

Answer: Katharine Ross

Ingenue Katharine Ross garnered an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the unsuspecting bride-to-be betrayed by her own mother. She would later go on to star in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" for which she won a BAFTA for Best Actress.
5. In Billy Wilder's "Sabrina" (1954), the Larrabee brothers, played by Humphrey Bogart and William Holden, compete for the affections of Sabrina, played by Audrey Hepburn. What is Sabrina's connection to the Larrabee family?

Answer: She is the daughter of the family chauffeur.

Sabrina Fairchild (Audrey Hepburn), whose father had been the Larrabee family chauffeur for many years, had had a huge crush on the younger Larrabee brother David (William Holden) ever since she was a young girl. The thrice married playboy David, however, always viewed Sabrina as a child and never paid her much attention. Now that she is a young woman David finally notices her, but in a somewhat inexplicable May-December love story, the 55 year old Bogart out charms the considerably younger Holden for 25 year old Audrey Hepburn's affections. Nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Actress, the film took home only one Oscar for Costume Design.
6. In which film did a fickle Kristen Bell leave songwriter Jason Segal for rock star Russel Brand?

Answer: Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Russel Brand steals several scenes as the swaggering over-the-top front man, Aldous Snow, in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008). He reprised his role in the 2010 spin-off film "Get Him to the Greek".
7. Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier burned up the screen with dark passion in William Wyler's 1939 adaptation of "Wuthering Heights". What are the names of the three tortured characters involved in this gothic romance?

Answer: Heathcliff, Cathy, and Edgar

A reserved performance by David Niven, as the well-intentioned Edgar Linton, provided a stark contrast to the tempestuous scenes between Olivier and Oberon, who turned their off screen dislike for each other into an angry, palpable passion. Released in 1939, the consensus best year in American film making history, "Wuthering Heights" had serious competition at the 12th Academy Awards and won only one Oscar for cinematography.
8. Kirsten Dunst plants an iconic kiss on an agile Tobey Maguire causing the brooding James Franco to adopt the alter ego of his late father. Who is this envious super villain?

Answer: The Green Goblin

Debuting in the fourteenth issue of The Amazing Spider-Man comic book, The Green Goblin is considered to be one of the webslinger's archenemies. He is the alter ego of wealthy industrialist Norman Osborn whose accidental exposure to chemicals renders him with superior intellectual and physical prowess as well as a demented world view.

In a climactic on-screen battle between Spider-Man and the Goblin, the senior Osborn is killed. Harry Osborn (James Franco), already jealous of Spidey's affections for Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst), vows to avenge his father's death and adopts the mantle of The Green Goblin.
9. One of the greatest American comedies ever made was George Cukor's "The Philadelphia Story" (1940). Which superstar actor played Katherine Hepburn's yacht designing ex-husband?

Answer: Cary Grant

Born in Bristol, England in 1904, Cary Grant was ranked second behind Humphrey Bogart on AFI's 1999 list of male screen legends. He appeared in over 60 films between his debut in 1932 and his retirement in 1966. Adapted from the brilliant Broadway play by Phillip Barry, "The Philadelphia Story" was the fourth and final collaboration between Katharine Hepburn and Grant. James Stewart, ranked by AFI as the third most iconic American male actor, won his only Oscar for his work in this film.
10. "The Misfits" (1961) featured Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable in what would be their last films. Along with third wheel Elli Wallach, in what dubious activity did this threesome engage?

Answer: Wrangling wild mustangs for use as pet food

With over 30,000 feral horses roaming the high scrublands of Nevada, the capturing of mustangs for use as pet food was a common practice in the post-war west. The brutal hunt usually involved chasing the horses, who were often weighed down with chains or old tires, until they collapsed from exhaustion.

In 1971 the Free Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Protection Act was enacted by the United States Congress which made the killing of wild horses illegal. Montgomery Clift also appeared in this stark and tragic film, which today is viewed as on of the first great movies to address the demise of the romantic vision of the American West. Marilyn Monroe, who died 18 months after the film's release, was predeceased by Clark Gable who passed a mere ten days after filming.
