Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who says this, in the prologue? "It all began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves; immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven, to the Dwarf Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within these rings was bound the strength and the will to govern over each race. But they were all of them deceived, for another ring was made."

Answer: Galadriel

At the beginning of the "The Fellowship of the Ring", Galadriel introduces the problem of the One Ring.

"Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie."
2. Who says "Against the power of Mordor there can be no victory"?

Answer: Saruman

This is in "The Fellowship of the Ring".

Gandalf goes to Saruman to seek counsel concerning the Ring. Saruman says, "Against the power of Mordor there can be no victory." Gandalf says that with time they can build up their strength and overcome the might of Sauron, but Saruman says that there is no time. He says that at this point the hobbits have probably already been found by the Wraiths. It is at this point Gandalf tries to leave to save the hobbits and the treachery of Saruman is revealed when he does not allow Gandalf to leave.
3. Who says "Let us hunt some orc"?

Answer: Aragorn

This is also in the movie "The Fellowship of the Ring".

Boromir dies and Merry and Pippin are taken captive by the Uruk-hai. After the release of Boromir over the Falls of Rauros, Legolas starts to cross to the Eastern shore when he realizes Aragorn is not following. Wondering what he plans to do, Aragorn explains that he cannot leave Merry and Pippin to torment and death. He ends his statement with "Let us hunt some orc".
4. What does Legolas say in response to Aragorn saying, "Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall"?

Answer: "They may yet be alive!"

In "The Two Towers" movie, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are trying to catch the Uruk-hai and rescue the two young hobbits. The sign of finding the Lorien brooch on the ground is great evidence that the hobbits are still alive. Lorien cloaks are enchanted so that they protect their wearers and they do not abandon them, nor are the Uruk-hai smart enough to think that such a small thing would be a sign of life to the pursuers.
5. "They wait for my command. Shall I shoot?" Who says this?

Answer: Faramir

This is in "The Two Towers" movie.

Gollum enters the Forbidden Pool which is punishable by death. Faramir asks Frodo what he should do and references the archers positioned to shoot at Gollum.
6. Who yells "Victory! We have Victory!"?

Answer: Theoden

While Sam's monologue is going on at the end of the "The Two Towers", the screen changes to the battle of Helm's Deep where the viewer can hear Theoden yelling to his people that they have the victory.
7. "Ever you desire to appear lordly and gracious as a king of old." What leader says this?

Answer: Denethor

This is from "The Return of the King".

Denethor is mad at Faramir for sending the ring to Mordor in the hands of Frodo instead of keeping it locked away in the darkness of the citadel. Faramir declares that he would not have brought the Ring to Minas Tirith had it been the only way to save her because he recognizes the destructiveness of the Ring. Denethor's response is that Faramir is always trying to become like the kings of old.
8. What important figure says "You ride to war, but not to victory"?

Answer: Elrond

This is also from "The Return of the King".

Elrond comes to visit Aragorn and tells him that they may ride to war but there will be no victory based on the current number of soldiers. He follows this up with presenting the sword Anduril to Aragorn and telling him to travel on the paths of the dead and to call the army of the dead to fulfill their oaths, which will give them the victory.
9. At the end of the "The Return of the King", who says "It is time, Frodo"?

Answer: Gandalf

This is also from "The Return of the King", but it is at the very end.

The time of the elves is ended and Galadriel, Celeborn, Elrond, and Gandalf, even though he is not an elf, are leaving for Valinor. Galadriel, Elrond, and Gandalf each bear one of the three elven rings. Bilbo is also going and as Gandalf turns to board the ship he looks at Frodo telling him it is time to leave.
10. Back in the "The Fellowship of the Ring", as the fellowship is traveling through Moria, they come upon the tomb of Balin, one of the thirteen dwarves of the Hobbit. What is the first sentence Gandalf says after he reads what is inscribed on the tomb?

Answer: "He is dead, then."

In the "The Fellowship of the Ring", the fellowship travels through Moria and they come upon the tomb of Balin. Gimli weeps for the loss, and Gandalf removes his hat saying, "He is dead, then." When they first entered Moria they found Goblin arrows and the death of Balin only served to fully convince them that all the dwarves had died in Moria.
