Gandalf is a wizard who is great friends with Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, and later joins the Fellowship. He begins the trilogy as Gandalf the Grey, and later becomes Gandalf the White, after fighting the balrog in Moria. These colors are levels that show a wizard's progress using magic. There are three levels: brown, grey, and white.

Grima is Saruman's assistant. In "The Two Towers", he becomes King Theoden's right-hand man in order to spy on Rohan for Saurman. Aragorn joins the Fellowship after meeting up with the hobbits in Bree at the Prancing Pony. Aragorn is a ranger who has inherited the throne of Gondor, but chose not to claim it. Denethor then becomes the steward for Gondor for many years. Aragorn later does claim the throne, though, in "The Return of the King".

The entire "Lord of the Rings" trilogy focuses on The One Ring. After the Ring is made, an alliance of men and elves fight against Sauron to stop him from controlling Middle-Earth. Isildur succeeds in cutting the Ring off of Sauron's finger. Isildur is later killed by orcs, and the Ring falls into a river, where it is later found by Gollum.
While journeying with Gandalf and the dwarves, Bilbo gets lost in a cave and finds the Ring, and eventually steals it from Gollum. Bilbo later gives Frodo the Ring by Gandalf's wishes. Frodo and his companions then journey across Middle-Earth in order to destroy it, before it falls into the hands of Sauron, the Ring's creator.

Sam is a member of the Fellowship and is best friends with Frodo. In the beginning of "The Fellowship", he is Frodo's gardener. While gardening outside of Bag End, Sam overhears Gandalf telling Frodo about the Ring, so Gandalf makes Sam join Frodo on his journey. Although it wasn't his choice to go, Sam gets excited that he might get to meet some elves, which he later does get to do.

Saruman the White is a wizard who was once friends with Gandalf. When the search for the Ring begins, Saruman decides to join Sauron. He thinks that Sauron is more powerful than those who oppose him, and that Sauron will win in the end. Saruman thinks that it is useless to fight against Sauron, so he joins forces with him instead.

The Nazgul are also called Ringwraiths. These nine, undead creatures were once human kings, until they become servants of Sauron through rings that they were given long ago. Their task is to find the Ring and give it to their master, Sauron. The leader of the Ringwraiths is the Witch-king.
He joins the battle in "The Return of the King." Witch-king cannot be killed by any man, but is later killed by Eowyn (human woman), with the help of Merry (hobbit).

Answer: Legolas and Gimli
Legolas and Gimli are best friends, despite the long hatred between elves and dwarves. This feud began when the dwarves dug too deeply into the ground while mining, and unburied a balrog. The elves thought that the dwarves were too greedy, and that because of their greed for riches, they had now unleashed a horrible creature into the world.

Denethor is Boromir and Faramir's father. He is also the steward of Gondor. After Boromir and Faramir's "deaths", Denethor feels alone, so he decides to burn himself and Faramir in a funeral pyre. During this ceremony, Denethor learns that Faramir is not actually dead, but only injured. Denethor then commits suicide by jumping off of the top of Minas Tirith while on fire. After the Ring was destroyed, Aragorn claims the throne.
