8. "Boogie Nights" - sounds like a perfectly nice film about people going out to do a spot of dancing, doesn't it? Well, nothing could be further from the truth. Which of the following films was by the same director, Paul Thomas Anderson, and yet had very little to do with flowers? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. In 1997, I went to see "The Saint". Naturally, I expected a biopic of St Francis of Assisi, but in fact it turned out to be all about a spy, played by Val Kilmer. Can you name the character he played? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. I can't finish without mentioning what must be the most misleading movie title of recent years - "Snakes on a Plane".

Seriously, where were the snakes, and ... er ... the plane ... er ....

Alright, that one's not so misleading. Who starred?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1993, Steven Spielberg brought us "Jurassic Park". But of the following four dinosaurs featured in the film, only one was actually alive during the Jurassic age. Which one?

Answer: Brachiosaurus

By rights, T-Rex, Triceratops and Velociraptor should have appeared in a film called "Cretaceous Park". Of course, in a film where dinosaurs were created out of bits of old amber and frogs, some might say that this was the least of its scientific worries.
2. 1981's "Clash of the Titans" was notable for not actually having any titans in it. Which of the following was a titan (and hence not in the film)?

Answer: Cronus

The "Titans" were the race of Greek Gods who preceded Zeus and Co. (the "Olympians"), and consisted of Coeus, Crius, Cronus, Hyperion, Iapetus, Mnemosyne, Oceanus, Phoebe, Rhea, Tethys, Theia and Themis.

The movie did feature two monsters: the Kraken and Medusa. However neither of these was a Titan in Greek mythology and by the time they met, Medusa had already had her head cut off, which didn't make for much of a "Clash".
3. The main character in "Slumdog Millionaire" (a) is not a dog and (b) does not actually win a million. Who directed this Oscar-winning film?

Answer: Danny Boyle

British director Danny Boyle at one stage seriously considered joining the priesthood, but instead decided to spend his life making films about murder, substance abuse and poverty. And we salute him for it.
4. "The Sixth Sense" was a highly misleading title, since it implied that most people only have five senses, which is untrue. What is the sixth sense in the film?

Answer: Sensing dead people

Most scientists agree that humans have more than five senses, including balance, heat sensation and pain but (perhaps surprisingly) not "seeing dead people" (as featured in this M Night Shyamalan film).

In the film, the young star was able to see and interact with dead people. A 2003 poll suggested that over half of American adults believe that ghosts walk the earth and presumably therefore thought this film was a documentary.
5. I enjoyed watching Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs". However, in the whole film, I'm sure I didn't see a single reservoir. There may have been a dog at one point, but if there was it didn't have much of a role and certainly didn't deserve to get in the title. Anyway, which of the following was not a member of the criminal gang who carried out the failed robbery?

Answer: Mr Gold

It has been said that the name of the film came from the fact that Tarantino could not pronounce the name of another film, "Au Revoir Les Enfants". I have no idea whether this is true - if you know, then by all means write in. Although not to me.

Mr Pink was played by Steve Buscemi, Mr White by Harvey Keitel, and Mr Blonde by Michael Madsen. Mr Gold is a song by German heavy metal band, "Warlock".
6. "What's Eating Gilbert Grape"? Nothing, that's what. Who played him?

Answer: Johnny Depp

OK, it wasn't that bad a film featuring, as it did, a memorable scene in which the main character set fire to his house. The fact that the main character didn't get eaten by a runaway tiger is ultimately a positive.

Interestingly, the word "Depp" means idiot in German.
7. My young son got terribly excited when he saw that "The Lion in Winter" was coming on TV, since he thought it would be a sequel to "The Lion King". In fact, it turned out to be a historical yarn about an English king, married to Eleanor of Aquitaine. Which king?

Answer: Henry II

Henry II was the father of Richard the Lionheart ("Lionheart" being a misleading description in both a literal and metaphorical sense). His other sons were called John and Geoffrey - not interesting names, but at least not inaccurate.
8. "Boogie Nights" - sounds like a perfectly nice film about people going out to do a spot of dancing, doesn't it? Well, nothing could be further from the truth. Which of the following films was by the same director, Paul Thomas Anderson, and yet had very little to do with flowers?

Answer: Magnolia

This film was a complex intertwining of lives, bringing several stories (including that of a dying man, a mysogynist, and a rain of frogs) into one cohesive narrative. This was probably why it didn't do very well at the box office.

The flower "Magnolia" was named after French botanist Pierre Magnol.
9. In 1997, I went to see "The Saint". Naturally, I expected a biopic of St Francis of Assisi, but in fact it turned out to be all about a spy, played by Val Kilmer. Can you name the character he played?

Answer: Simon Templar

There have been numerous adaptations of Leslie Charteris's "The Saint", about a Robin Hood-like thief who robs from those who deserve it, ranging from a 1938 Louis Hayward version, through Roger Moore and Ian Ogilvy, and up to Mr Kilmer. Some of them may have been good - who knows?
10. I can't finish without mentioning what must be the most misleading movie title of recent years - "Snakes on a Plane". Seriously, where were the snakes, and ... er ... the plane ... er .... Alright, that one's not so misleading. Who starred?

Answer: Samuel L. Jackson

This is an example of a film that went too far in the other direction, including no imagination whatsoever in the title. Other films that "do exactly what they say on the tin" include "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "James and the Giant Peach" and "Giant Monkey Kill Kill".

OK, I made the last one up.

Samuel L Jackson has a criminal record, earned for his participation in the taking of a college board hostage when he was 21.
