Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. MGM was one of the leading Hollywood Studios to produce movie musicals. Which lesser known movie musical, mostly set in a music store at the turn of the century, was an adaptation of a Hungarian play and Ernst Lubitsch's subsequent movie version of that play?

Answer: In the Good Old Summertime

The Hungarian play "Perfumery" by Miklós László and its adaptation "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940) with James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan were both set in a perfumery in Budapest. The story, about two people who cannot bear each other in real life, but unbeknownst fall in love through their letters, was later modernized for "You've Got Mail". "In the Good Old Summertime" (1949) with Judy Garland and Van Johnson reset the plot in a music store in order to create a natural environment for the added songs. This musical also marked the first on screen appearance of Liza Minnelli, still a toddler then, as the daughter of Judy Garland and Van Johnson in the last shot of the movie.

The power of this musical drama stems from the glorious cinematography, the compelling narrative, and the lead character's vocal and acting excellence in her role. Who played the lead character, Selma, in this 2000 film?

Answer: Bjork

This tragic and beautiful film was directed by Lars von Trier, who was responsible for a "Golden Heart Trilogy" film series that included this film, "Breaking the Waves," and "The Idiots". This film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and it was awarded the Palme d'Or award, which is the highest prize that can be won at the festival; Bjork won an award for Best Actress at Cannes and the key song from the film "I've Seen It All" was nominated for an Academy Award. It was at the Academy Awards that Bjork turned heads when she showed up in a goose-inspired frock with a bedazzled goose egg strapped to her ankle.

6. Which movie musical, released in 1986, had a chorus of three girls - Ronette, Chiffon, and Crystal - commenting the plot?

Answer: Little Shop of Horrors

The horror/comedy musical about the singing, talking, and man-eating plant from Outer Space with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman premiered Off-Broadway in 1982 with Ellen Greene as Audrey; she's the only member of the original cast who reprised her role in the movie.

Based on the B-horror movie of the same name (directed by Roger Corman), the musical tells the story of Seymour Krelborne, working in a rundown flower shop, who suddenly encounters a strange and mysterious plant, which through blood and later human bodies grows to become the "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" eager to take over the world. Different from the stage show in which all our main characters end up as plant food, the movie chose an alternate ending (even though the sinister one had been filmed too) with Seymour and Audrey surviving and finally moving to their house where they will "snuggle watching Lucy on the big enormous 12-inch screen".

Besides Rick Moranis as Seymour and Ellen Greene as Audrey, it's Steve Martin's hilarious performance as sadistic dentist Orin that stands out.

Question by Picard25
7. A chubby teenager anxious to get up in the morning, greeting her city with the song "Good Morning, Baltimore" was the beginning of which 2007 movie?

Answer: Hairspray

Adam Shankman directed the big screen version of the 2002 Broadway success (Music: Marc Shaiman, Lyrics: Shaiman and Scott Wittman), which in turn was based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name.

Despite an undeniably large amount of cheerful music and comedy, the movie also addressed serious issues like segregation or the importance of individuality ith the feisty overweight protagonist Tracy Turnblad fighting against the former while advocating the latter.

Like in John Waters' straight film and the stage productions of the Musical, Tracy's mother Edna again was played by a man. In this case it was John Travolta donning a fatsuit and a dress to confidently declare "You can't stop my happiness 'cause I like the way I am. And you just can't stop my knife and fork when I see a Christmas ham!"

8. While in the stage production of "Chicago" the "sob-sister of the Evening Star", Mary Sunshine, was traditionally played by a man in drag, in the 2002 film she was portrayed by a woman. Which actress played this part in the movie?

Answer: Christine Baranski

Christine Baranski, best known for her portrayal of the constantly drunk Maryann Thorpe in the sitcom "Cybill", took on the part of Mary Sunshine, even though her song "A Little Bit of Good" had been cut. In 2008 though, she finally would get the chance to show off her musical talents, when she was cast as Tanya in the highly successful film version of "Mamma Mia!"

When director Rob Marshall transferred "Chicago" to the silver screen (2002), a great number of changes to the original material had to be made to comply with his cinematic vision. One of them was to cast a woman in a role normally portrayed by a female impersonator singing falsetto who in the second act reveals the "truth" by removing wig and dress.

"Chicago" tells the story of Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger) who with the help of the press and the cunning lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere) - and lots of music - manages to escape the charges pressed against her for murdering her lover. In a trial resembling a Vaudeville performance ("When you're in trouble, go into your dance") Roxie is found not guilty.

The romp about the Merry Murderesses of Cook County Jail received 13 Oscar nominations, winning six of them, including Best Picture and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma Kelly).

Question by Picard25
9. What was the only song that was not a cover version in "Moulin Rouge!"?

Answer: Come What May

"Come What May" was originally written for Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet". It did not meet the requirements for an Oscar nomination as it was not written for "Moulin Rouge!".

10. Who did the character named Joe Gideon say "Showtime" to every morning as part of his daily routine in the movie "All that Jazz"?

Answer: Himself in the mirror

The 1979 movie "All That Jazz" starred Roy Scheider as Joe Gideon and Jessica Lange as Angelique. The movie was based on the life of Bob Fosse, the director of the movie who died in 1987. As part of Gideon's morning routine, he would take some pills, Alka-Seltzer and get in the shower. To finish this start of the day, he would look into the mirror and say, "Showtime."
