Petty criminal Gerry Conlan, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, was in London at the time of the Guildford pub bombing which killed several people, and along with his father and friends, was wrongly convicted of the crime. They spent the next fifteen years in prison trying to prove their innocence. Day-Lewis gave a strong performance as with other films he has starred in including 'Gangs of New York' (2002) and 'There Will Be Blood' (2007).
