Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the doctor that was paged over the intercom while Michael was in the hospital?

Answer: Dr. Young

Michael had just been pulled from the water. He lay almost lifeless on the beach. Ellen thought her son was dead. Brody told Ellen their son was in shock. Michael had only a few moments ago had an encounter with the shark. Brody yelled at the people around him to get blankets to wrap his son up in. Michael was taken to the hospital. Ellen was talking to her son when Dr. Young was paged on the hospital's intercom. Michael was being rolled into his room on a hospital bed. Ellen asked him if there was anything he wanted. Michael told his mom to bring him his cars and coffee flavored ice cream.

The voice on the intercom sounded like Steven Spielberg to me, but I can't be sure of it. The hospital scene in the film was a turning point. Martin had Mayor Vaughn in a hospital room and demanded he sign the voucher. The voucher was to hire Quint to kill the shark. Steven Spielberg's voice did have a cameo in the film. He was the voice of the Coast Guard on the radio.
2. What kind of canned goods did Quint have in his shack?

Answer: Campbell's Soup

Martin and Hooper went to Quint's house to inform him he had gotten the contract to kill the shark. Quint was going over a list of demands that he wanted and Brody was approving them all. Quint walked over to where a pot was boiling and pulled out a set of jaws. There behind Quint was a modest collection of canned goods. There were the cans of Campbell's soup and several cans of vegetables. Quint then gave Brody a shot of alcohol that he had prepared himself. Brody took a small sip and then spit it out. Hooper came over and took the remains of the glass and drank it.

It was pretty obvious from the few scattered items in Quint's house that he lived a simple life. You got the feeling from this scene that he was not about frills at all. He was a bachelor and lived like one. The canned items were the only sign of food in the house. He did have his fishing equipment and several sets of jaws around the house. Quint was played by the late great Robert Shaw.
3. Carl Gottlieb was responsible for several key duties in the film. What duties did Carl perforn throughout the filming of "Jaws"?

Answer: Screenwriter and Actor

Carl was brought in to help with the script for the movie. He was also cast as Meadows, the newspaper editor. He was only in a few scenes in the movie. He appeared in the scene where they photographed the captured shark. He also was in the scene where Mayor Vaughn confronted Martin about shutting down the beach. Carl said the saddest moment of the movie for him was when he realized his character was not needed. He had to write his own character out of the film.

During their long stay on Martha's Vineyard, Carl spent most of his time with Steven cooped up in the rental house. They were always working on the script for the film. He said while the rest of the crew was out partying after the day's shooting all he did was work. His efforts in my opinion were not wasted as the film turned out to be a box office hit. Carl was also the screenwriter on "Jaws 2", "Jaws 3", and "The Jerk".
4. What item did Ellen tell Martin she wanted back?

Answer: coffee cup

Martin and Ellen had just awakened from the previous night's sleep. They were both in the kitchen talking when the phone rang. Martin picked up the phone and told the voice on the other end he would be there in about twenty minutes. Martin left the house with a coffee mug full of coffee. Ellen followed him out the door and helped him put on his jacket. Martin said good bye to his wife and son as he got into his truck. Ellen was now sitting on the seesaw with their youngest son, Sean.

She yelled at Martin that she wanted her mug back.

He told her that she would get it.
5. Who produced the film?

Answer: David Brown

David, along with Richard Zanuck, produced this 1975 classic. The production was riddled with problems from the beginning. The film went over its initial budget and took longer to shoot then what was originally anticipated. One incident that occurred was a photographer snuck on where the mechanical shark was been kept and snapped a picture. The photographer took a picture of the side of the shark that wasn't enclosed. You could see all the mechanical parts. The photograph was published in an issue of "Time" magazine. The producers and Steven were upset about this photograph. They thought if people knew the shark was fake they wouldn't come see the movie. They couldn't have been more wrong.

David and Richard would talk to the studio executives on a daily basis and took the heat for Steven. They never let Steven know what the executives said. David has produced along with Richard a great deal of successful movies such as "Cocoon", "The Verdict", and "Neighbors". David sadly passed away in 2002.
6. What did Ellen pack for Brody when he was going out on Quint's boat?

Answer: Blistex

Ellen and Martin were walking to Quint's boat. Martin along with Hooper was going with Quint to attempt to catch the shark. It was obvious from her demeanor that she was afraid for Martin. She told him she packed an extra pair of glasses in his black socks.

She also told him that she packed his Blistex and zinc oxide for his nose. Ellen asked Martin what she was supposed to tell the children. He told her to tell the boys he had gone fishing. Martin and Ellen embraced and Martin walked to the boat. Ellen was unable to continue to hide the fear she felt of possibly losing her husband. Ellen ran from the docks extremely upset.
7. What item of clothing did Martin insult Harry about?

Answer: swim cap

Chief Brody was sitting on the beach watching all of the beach patrons. He was trying to keep his attention on the water. Several people who lived on the island kept trying to talk to Brody. One older gentleman by the name of Harry had just gotten out of the water.

He went up to talk to Chief Brody. Harry sat down on a cooler in front of Brody. He told Brody that he knew that Brody didn't like the water. Brody said, "That is some bad hat Harry". Harry was wearing a blue bathing cap. This remark offended Harry so much that he got up and walked away from the Chief.
8. What kind of shoes did Mayor Vaughn mention in the movie?

Answer: Buster Browns

Hooper and Martin are trying to tell Mayor Vaughn about the shark. In the background, we saw a vandalized billboard. The billboard was originally of a young girl on a raft enjoying the beach at Amity. The sign now had a shark fin painted on it and the girl was screaming for help. Mayor Vaughn was clearly trying to avoid Hooper and Martin's concerns about the shark.

He told Martin that he wanted the people responsible for the vandalism to be hung upside down by the Buster Browns. Hooper was becoming irriated with Vaughn as he was not listening to his argument over finding and killing the shark.
9. What instrument was the man playing in the opening scene of the film?

Answer: harmonica

In the beginning of the film, we saw a group of people partying on the beach. There was a young man playing the harmonica. "Drunk guy" was staring at a very pretty young blonde across from him. "DG" walked over to Chrissie and started up a conversation. We heard the harmonica playing in the background as Chrissie and "DG" got up and walked away. Chrissie was running and "DG" was running behind her. He was extremely intoxicated as he fell down the beach as Chrissie entered the water.

The free reed harmonica was invented in 1820. It was the invention of Christian Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann. In my opinion, the harmonica was intended to set a harmonious setting in the film's first scene. I felt like it the music in the film was almost like a separate character in itself. The menacing theme that played when the shark was getting ready to attack definitely had this aspect to it.
10. What make of car did Mayor Vaughn and his associates get out of on the ferry?

Answer: Cadillac

Martin was on the ferry going over to get some boys out of the water. In the background, we heard the beeping of a car horn. The Cadillac owned by Mayor Vaughn was trying to get on the ferry. The Mayor and his associates including the doctor from the town got out of the car.

The Mayor confronted Martin about shutting down the beach. Martin told Vaughn that the doctor said it was a shark that killed Chrissie. The doctor retracted his statement and said it was a boat propeller. Mayor Vaughn told Martin it was his first summer and not to over-react.
