Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the newly-founded town, in which most of the action of 'Paint Your Wagon' takes place?

Answer: No-Name City

Everyone was consumed by gold-fever, and no-one could be bothered naming the town. No-Name City was located somewhere in Gold-Rush-era California.
2. A very youthful-looking Clint Eastwood starred as Pardner, a God-fearing adventurer who survived a bad accident, and was 'adopted' by the very irreverent Ben (Lee Marvin). Pardner's real name was only revealed towards the end of the movie - what was it?

Answer: Sylvester Newel

Ben did not know it, and only asked Pardner when he was leaving for the next gold strike, at Red Dog. He commented that it was a good name for a farmer.

The incorrect options are all roles played by Eastwood in other movies - Harry Callahan was 'Dirty Harry', Philo Beddoe was the hero of 'Every Which Way But Loose' and Frank Morris was an escape artist in 'Escape from Alcatraz'.
3. There were many funny moments in the movie, but not many can beat the sight of dozens of drunken miners dancing in ankle-deep mud. What was the name of the tune they were dancing to?

Answer: Hand Me Down That Can of Beans

"Hand me down that can o' beans,
I'm throwing it away"

The music was provided by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. 'The Best Things in Life are Dirty' was sung by Pardner, Ben, and a couple of other miners when they were actually mining, and not drinking, dancing or gambling!
4. Some of the main attractions of the movie were the songs, and a particular favourite of mine was the sad song 'They Call the Wind Maria'. Other natural phenomena also get mentioned in the song. Can you tell me the names of the Rain and Fire?

Answer: Tess and Joe

As can be imagined in a town that is exclusively male populated, there was a lot of loneliness, or 'melancholy'. This song was more than capably performed by Harve Presnell, who played Rotten Luck Willie, the card-shark.

Interesting fact - Mariah Carey was named after this song.
5. When a Mormon man arrived in town with two wives, the locals were incensed, and they demanded that he share his good fortune. An auction of one of the wives was quickly arranged, and Ben, who was paralytically drunk, won the sale. Who played the delightful Elizabeth, the object of desire to every man in town?

Answer: Jean Seberg

Seberg's life was not a happy one. She appeared in various movies such as 'The Mouse that Roared', 'Saint Joan' and 'Airport', but abusive husbands, FBI investigations for allegedly anti-American sentiments, the loss of her infant daughter and having her fortune stolen led to her committing suicide in 1979.
6. The song 'There's a Coach Coming In' was sung heartily by everyone in town. Who or what was on the coach that caused all the excitement?

Answer: Six French ladies

The coach was hi-jacked on its way to Red Rock, after a rather vigorous (and one-sided) town meeting. The 'tarts' were greeted by a rather insipid version of 'The Marseillaise', played by a group of Chinese coolies, and the French tricolour was run up the flagpole. From that day on, No-Name City was never the same again, with saloons and bawdy-houses springing up like mushrooms.
7. 'Paint Your Wagon' was the source of one of the music world's most unlikely hits, performed by Lee Marvin. What song was it?

Answer: Wand'rin' Star

Marvin's gravelly basso voice propelled 'Wand'rin' Star' to the top of the UK and Australian charts in 1970. It even kept the Beatles' 'Let It Be' out of the prime spot. The B-side of the 45 single was Eastwood's 'I Talk to the Trees'.

As a wannabe bass myself, 'Wand'rin' Star' is one of my favourite sing-in-the-shower songs.
8. Tom Ligon, who later went on to star in the soapie 'The Young and the Restless', had a small part in 'Paint Your Wagon'. He portrayed the naive son of a farming family, who 'came of age' with the help of Ben. What was his character's name?

Answer: Horton Fenty

Ben taught the young Horton how to drink hard liquor and smoke cigars, and one of the French ladies completed his education.

Holbrook and Tabor were other characters in the movie, and Joshua Logan was the director.
9. Elizabeth refused to leave her cottage as the story drew to a close. Who chose to stay with her to start a new life?

Answer: Pardner

Ben was a restless type who refused to be tied down to any particular place, and left to follow his 'Wand'rin' Star'.
10. What eventually happened to the boom-town at the end of the movie?

Answer: It collapsed due to all the mine tunnels running beneath it

Ben and a few of his cronies decided that there must be lots of gold dust falling between the floorboards of the saloons and brothels of No-Name City, and honeycombed the entire town subterraneanly. When the pastor gave forth his Hell and Brimstone predictions, the entire town sank into mud and oblivion.
