Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A 1953 thriller was set near, and named for, the waterfall pictured. What blonde bombshell played a wife plotting to murder her husband while on vacation?

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

"Niagara" was made at a time when Niagara Falls was still known as the "honeymoon capital of the world", making that city a perfect setting for a mystery involving honeymoon couples and murderous lovers. Marilyn played Rose Loomis who plotted with her lover to do away with her husband George (Joseph Cotten).
2. Pictured is a corvette of the Canadian Navy, the same type of ship that was one of the 'stars' of 1953's "The Cruel Sea". What happened to the corvette in the movie?

Answer: She sank in the North Atlantic whilst on convoy duty.

"The Cruel Sea" was based on Nicholas Monsarrat's novel of the same name and told the story of the ship's captain, Commander Ericson (Jack Hawkins), and crew as they coped with the rigors of convoy duty in the North Atlantic, and later the Mediterranean. After HMS Compass Rose, the corvette, is sunk Ericson and some of the survivors served together in a somewhat larger frigate until the end of the movie, and the war.

The photo is of HMCS Sackville, Canada's Naval Memorial, anchored in Halifax, Nova Scotia and a veteran of WWII.
3. Although the scene depicted is not from the movie, it should bring to mind the film for which Melissa Leo received her first Academy Award nomination. What is this 2008 movie?

Answer: Frozen River

In "Frozen River", Melissa Leo played a mother struggling to make ends meet for her and her two sons after being left in a bad situation by her no-good husband. Teaming up with another single mother, a Mohawk from the nearby reservation, to do a bit of smuggling by driving across the frozen river to Canada and back, seemed like a good idea, but inevitably things became complicated.

Leo was Oscar-nominated for her leading role as Ray Eddy, but lost to Kate Winslet in "The Reader".
4. In what 1942 movie did James Cagney and Dennis Morgan fly bush planes similar to the one pictured, before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force to serve in WWII?

Answer: Captains of the Clouds

The bush pilots played by Cagney and Morgan were rough, tough, seat-of-the-pants fliers and deemed too undisciplined and too old to make good combat pilots. After some foul ups in training and the obligatory romantic interludes, they made good and proved themselves to be assets to the war effort.

The film was very much a propaganda piece, and featured an a cappella rendition of "There'll Always Be an England" by Reginald Gardiner, who played another bush pilot.
5. The 1955 film "The Dam Busters" featured modified versions of the Lancaster bomber, relatives of the one pictured. One of the modifications involved being fitted to carry and deliver a bouncing bomb. Who played the 'boffin' who came up with the idea for the bomb?

Answer: Michael Redgrave

Michael Redgrave played the extraordinary Barnes Wallis, a scientist, designer and inventor whose brain was always working. The movie spent as much time on his development of the bouncing bomb idea to a workable state as it did on the actual raid on the dams, and made for fascinating viewing. Richard Todd played Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC, who led the raid on the Ruhr Dams utilising Wallis's invention.
6. This sports facility wasn't built in an Iowa corn field, but still might help you remember the name of the character who built one there in a 1989 movie. Who did Kevin Costner play in that one?

Answer: Ray Kinsella

In "Field of Dreams" Ray heard voices telling him to build a baseball diamond in his corn field with the promise that "if you build it, he will come". After the diamond was built a number of people, including members of the 1919 Chicago "Black" Sox did indeed arrive in Ray's field. Ray Liotta appeared as Shoeless Joe Jackson.
7. What 1941 Orson Welles movie is suggested by the photograph?

Answer: Citizen Kane

"Rosebud" was the last word spoken by Charles Foster Kane, and its meaning was not revealed until the very end of the movie, nor will it be revealed here. Welles played Kane, a less than loveable, self-made newspaper tycoon who was not above using his friends to get ahead. Joseph Cotten appeared as one of those friends, Jedediah Leland.

The rosebud in the photo is in my own garden.
8. The 1956 movie suggested by the photo was based on a play by William Inge and directed by Joshua Logan. Who played the cowboy who fell in love with the singer played by Marilyn Monroe?

Answer: Don Murray

Cowboy Bo tried to force singer Cherie to ride the bus with him to his ranch so they could be married, but his plans started to unravel when they (and the rest of the passengers) got stuck at the "Bus Stop" by a blocked road.

Don Murray's other credits include "Baby the Rain Must Fall" (1965) and "The Hoodlum Priest" (1961).
9. If you "say what you see" you should come up with the title of a 1970 Canadian film about two friends from Nova Scotia who left home to look for jobs and prosperity in Toronto. What is the title of this movie, directed by Donald Shebib?

Answer: Goin' Down the Road

Doug McGrath and Paul Bradley played friends Peter and Joey, and the largely bleak tale of their quest for a perfect (or at least better) life was punctuated by some funny and many poignant scenes, as they sometimes aimed higher than they should have in the job market.
10. Many of the filming locations for the 1953 Montgomery Clift movie "I Confess" were in the Canadian city pictured. What is that provincial capital?

Answer: Quebec City

Clift played a priest, Father Michael Logan, who heard the confession of a murderer and, unable to tell the police what he learned, became a suspect himself to the point of being tried and convicted. The truth did come out in the end, but not before Logan was attacked by an angry mob.
