Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pierce's film career began in 1980, when he was credited as 'first Irishman' in which Bob Hoskins gangster film?

Answer: The Long Good Friday

'The Long Good Friday' was the first starring role for Bob Hoskins, with Helen Mirren as his co-star. Much of the film's plot involves dealings with the Irish Republican Army (IRA), so Pierce would have been able to use his native accent.

All the options listed included Hoskins in the cast, but not Brosnan; nor were they all gang related, although 'Mona Lisa', from 1986, did touch on the seedy side of life.

2. Pierce Brosnan famously portrayed the British spy James Bond in a number of films in that iconic series. Which of these was he NOT in?

Answer: Licence to Kill

Brosnan's first appearance as James Bond came in 1995's 'GoldenEye' and he continued to portray the character in 'Tomorrow Never Dies' (1997), 'The World is Not Enough' (1999) and 'Die Another Day' (2002). His predecessor in the role was Timothy Dalton, who was the star of 1989's 'Licence to Kill' in which Bond exacts revenge on drugs lord Franz Sanchez while acting as a rogue agent - as his "licence to kill" had been revoked.

Question by Rockette: Fifiona81
3. Brosnan took on the role originally played by Steve McQueen in the 1999 remake of 'The Thomas Crown Affair'. Who starred opposite Pierce as the insurance investigator who falls for Thomas Crown?

Answer: Renee Russo

While both McQueen and Brosnan played a character named Thomas Crown, the insurance investigator in the original film was named Vicki Anderson, with Renee Russo portraying Catherine Banning. The crime committed in each film was different too, with the first one being a bank robbery and the second an art theft, but the motivation was identical, with Crown enjoying the thrill of outwitting police and other investigators.

Faye Dunaway was in the 1968 film.

4. Desmond Doyle desperately wants his children, but has trouble making all the right choices to get them back once they have been placed into orphanages. This describes which of these films that Pierce Brosnan both produced and starred in?

Answer: Evelyn

In 'Evelyn', Desmond's wife leaves because he's out of work and in the drink. The children are placed in orphanages and he struggles to get them back. Eventually they end up in court and Evelyn's testimony turns the tide.

5. The 1997 film 'Dante's Peak' involved which type of disaster?

Answer: Volcanic eruption

This 1997 film also starred Linda Hamilton. Brosnan played a volcanologist, Harry Dalton, who is sent to investigate what has long believed to be a dormant volcano, called Dante's Peak. Although Dalton warns his superiors that the volcano is likely to erupt, his concerns are dismissed, leading to disaster when the townspeople are caught in the lava flows correctly predicted. Critics panned the film, but it was moderately successful with the public.

Question by Rockette: rossian
6. Pierce Brosnan stars as former Prime Minister Adam Lang, who is in process of having his autobiography written by a ghost writer. The original writer dies in a drowning accident and a new one is hired to complete the project. In which of these films would Brosnan's character die before the autobiography is completed?

Answer: The Ghost Writer

Ewan McGregor is hired as the ghost writer and tries to unravel several mysteries while trying to write the autobiography. Though Adam Lang is assassinated, the book is completed. The writer finally unravels the mystery, but at what cost?

Question by Rockette: mlcmlc
7. Which character did Pierce Brosnan provide the voice for in the animated film 'Quest for Camelot'?

Answer: King Arthur

'Quest for Camelot' was an animated musical about the Arthurian legends, but was based on the novel The King's Damosel by Vera Chapman. It follows the story of how the daughter of one of King Arthur's knights (Sir Lionel, voiced by Gabriel Byrne) and a blind hermit named Garrett (Cary Elwes) manage to end up with their own seats at the Round Table.

King Arthur himself was voiced by Pierce Brosnan (although Arthur's singing was done by another actor), while the magician Merlin was voiced by Sir John Gielgud.

8. For which film did Pierce Brosnan receive a Golden Globe nomination for his role as a disillusioned hitman named Julian Noble?

Answer: The Matador

'The Matador' starred Pierce Brosnan as hitman Julian Noble and Greg Kinnear as a businessman named Danny Wright. The pair meet in a bar in Mexico and strike up an unlikely friendship, albeit one that suffers when Julian attempts to enlist Danny's help with some of his 'jobs'. In the end Danny helps Julian with the assassination of his boss - which frees Julian up to enjoy a peaceful retirement. Although Brosnan was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a musical or comedy, he lost out to Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Johnny Cash in 'Walk the Line'.

Question by Rockette: Fifiona81
9. Pierce plays the role of Stu Dunmeyer in which 1993 film, starring Robin Williams?

Answer: Mrs Doubtfire

The film is among the best known of many to star Robin Williams. In 'Mrs Doubtfire' he dresses up as an elderly housekeeper so he can spend time with his children. His estranged wife, played by Sally Field, has acquired a new boyfriend by the name of Stu Dunmeyer, which is where Pierce Brosnan comes in. All the options listed starred Robin Williams, but only 'Mrs Doubtfire' also included Brosnan in the cast.

Question by Rockette: rossian
10. Pierce Brosnan reprised his role as Sam Carmichael in the 2018 film 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again'. His only solo song in this sequel was a partial 'a cappella' performance of which ABBA hit?

Answer: SOS

The plot of 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again' flitted backwards and forwards between the present day and the events of the 1970s that were hinted at in the original film. In the present day Pierce Brosnan's character had become one of the three possible grandfathers of Sophie Sheridan's new baby (in addition to being one of Sophie's three possible fathers in 'Mamma Mia'). In the past, the story covered how a young Sam (played by Jeremy Irvine) had met and lost Donna Sheridan, was portrayed. Brosnan's performance of 'SOS' - particularly the lines "When you're gone, how can I even try to go on" - were about Sam's attempts to come to terms with living without Donna in the future.
