Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From "Inspector Clouseau" (1968) - The inspector has been borrowed from the Surete to help solve a crime wave in Britain. Reporter: "Could you give us a statement please?" Inspector Clouseau: "Yes, ___________ makes one very thirsty."

Answer: chocolate

"Inspector Clouseau" is the third in the series of Clouseau films. This one did not star Peter Sellers, as he and Blake Edwards had vowed never to work together again. Alan Arkin played the bumbling French detective and did a completely credible job. But no one could ever equal Sellers in the role.
2. From "Goldmember" (2002) "There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch." Can you identify the character who said this? He was portrayed by Michael Caine.

Answer: Nigel Powers

Austin Powers finds his father, the master spy Nigel Powers, who has been kidnapped by you know who. Thwarting Evil's scheme to take over the world, he also finds that he and Dr. Evil are actually brothers.
3. From "Blazing Saddles", (1974) Sheriff Bart: "You're leaving? Can't you see that's the last act of a desperate man?" Howard Johnson: "We don't care if it's the first act of Henry the Fifth. We're leaving!" Why are they leaving town?

Answer: Villain Hedley Lamarr has vowed to wipe the town off the map

Bart Johnson (Cleavon Little) has been appointed Sheriff to protect the western town. Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman) is the villain trying to destroy the town and acquire all the land, as the railroad is coming through and, well, the plot has been done a thousand times, but never in a funnier way.

The quote, which I found so silly as to be extremely funny, is pretty well representative of the movie itself.
4. Mr. Hammer is attempting to sell Florida land. "You can have any kind of home you want. You can even have stucco. Oh, how you can get stucco!" Hammer is a hotel manager. The year is 1929. What is the movie?

Answer: The Coconuts

"The Coconuts" (1929) was a direct adaptation of the very successful play in which the Marx brothers had starred, and was made in New Jersey. The play was simply filmed with little change to the dialogue, settings or action. The movie concerns Mr. Hammer's shady dealings, his romancing of the staid Mrs. Potter (Margaret Dumont) and his attempts to keep his hotel afloat with the aid of Jamison (Zeppo Marx) and Chico and Harpo Marx.

It also features the beautiful Kay Francis.
5. Egbert Souse (pronounced Soo-zay): "Uh, did I happen to spend a twenty dollar bill in here last night?" Bartender: "Yeah." Souse (relieved): "Thank goodness! I thought I'd lost it." Who was the comic who uttered Souse's lines?

Answer: W.C. Fields

This is from "The Bank Dick" (1940). Fields is at his hen-pecked best in this classic about a man who, after accidentally thwarting a back robbery, accepts a job as a bank guard. He is also constantly trying to escape the watchful eye of his wife while trying to enjoy a peaceful 'nip' now and then. It also features one of my favorite actresses, Una Merkel, as his daughter.
6. From "Airplane" (1980 - An epidemic of food poisoning is sweeping through an airplane in mid-flight. Pilot: "What is it, Doctor, what's going on?" Doctor Rumack: "I'm not sure. I haven't seen anything like this since the Anita Bryant concert." What very talented actor played Dr. Rumack?

Answer: Leslie Nielsen

Although the film nominally starred Robert Hays and Julie Haggarty, it was Neilsen who stole the picture. Robert Stack and Lloyd Bridges were also hilarious as the pilot and air controller trying to talk an inexperienced pilot through landing the plane. Ex-basketball player Jabbar played the co pilot, Roger Murdock.
7. "History of the World, Part I" (1981) Count de Monet: "It is said that the people are revolting." King Louis XVI: "You're telling me? They stink on ice." At this time, the king is trap shooting in what unusual fashion?

Answer: He's using peasants as targets

This is a Mel Brooks movie that can be watched a dozen times and you will see something new and funny every time. The king is only one of the roles that Brooks plays; he is also Comicus, a Roman stand up philosopher, Torquemada, in a musical segment about the Spanish inquisition and Moses, who drops and breaks a tablet containing five of the original fifteen commandments.
8. "The Producers" (1968) Roger De Bris: "Will the dancing Hitlers please wait in the wings? We are only seeing singing Hitlers." De Bris is the director of "Springtime for Hitler", a play which is supposed to be a sure-fire flop. Is it?

Answer: No

Producers Bialystok and Bloom have gone to a great deal of trouble to produce what they think will be a flop, in a scheme to bilk investors. The musical is so bad that the audience takes it for a farce and it becomes a hit.
9. "Spaceballs" (1987) Barf: "I'm a Mog. Half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend." "Spaceballs" was a parody of what huge hit?

Answer: Star Wars

This is Mel Brooks salute to the sci-fi genre. It features such characters as Princess Vespa, Pizza the Hut, the robot Dot Matrix and Dark Helmet. A much underrated film, I believe.
10. "Manhattan Murder Mystery" (1993) Larry: "I can't listen to that much Wagner. I start getting the urge to conquer Poland." This is in response to his wife's insistence that he accompany her to the opera. Can you name the actor?

Answer: Woody Allen

Allen's wife is played by Diane Keaton, who gets involved in solving a murder. She is assisted by Alan Alda, resulting in jealousy on the part of her husband. Not one of Allen's best, but still watchable.
