Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who directed the movie version of "Rent"?

Answer: Chris Columbus

Chris Columbus is well known for directing "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Home Alone". Other directors, Spike Lee, Baz Luhrmann, and Rob Marshall, were all at one time rumoured to be making this movie, but it never worked out.
2. What song began the movie?

Answer: Seasons of Love

The movie began with Mark, Angel, Joanne, Roger, Collins, Maureen, Benny and Mimi lined up on stage in an empty theatre singing "Seasons of Love" in unison. This scene was entirely disconnected from the plot, but was a great introduction to the movie.
3. What was the name of Mark's documentary?

Answer: Today 4 U: Proof Positive

The title of Mark's film was seen at the very end of the movie, when Mark showed his film to everyone in the loft for the first time. Mark made the documentary to show life in New York and his friend's struggle with HIV/AIDS.
4. What was the outgoing message on Mark and Roger's answering machine?

Answer: Speak!

Their outgoing message was first heard while they were in the loft, when Mark's mom left him a message on Christmas to wish them Happy Holidays. The answering machine was heard again when Maureen called to get Mark to fix her sound equipment, before her protest.
5. Who sang the lines: "No way, can I be what I'm not, but hey, don't you want your girl hot?"

Answer: Maureen

Maureen sang this to Joanne in "Take me or Leave Me", during their engagement party at the country club, after she was caught flirting with one of the waitresses.
6. Which of the following songs was not in the movie?

Answer: Christmas Bells

"Will I" was sung during a Life Support meeting and "Your Eyes" was sung by Roger to Mimi at the end of the movie, before the finale. "I'll Cover You" was sung by Collins and Angel as a duet while they were walking down the streets of New York.
7. Who sang the lines: "I'm nineteen - but I'm old for my age, I'm just born to be bad"?

Answer: Mimi

Mimi sang this in the song "Light My Candle", when she purposely blew out her candle and knocked on Mark and Roger's door so she could flirt with Roger. Roger told her that she shouldn't do drugs because she looked like she was sixteen, and she responded with the above quote.
8. How many minutes are in a year (a memorable line in the song "Seasons of Love")?

Answer: 525 600

The line "Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes, how do you measure, measure a year?", was first heard in the opening scene of the movie when all the characters were singing "Seasons of Love" on the empty stage.
9. At what date and time did the story begin?

Answer: December 24, 1989, 9 pm EST

Mark said the date at the beginning of the film, right after they sang "Seasons of Love". This was the point from which he began "shooting without a script", as he filmed his documentary on life in New York.
10. Which character tried to embarrass Benny by mooning him in the restaurant?

Answer: Maureen

Maureen "dropped trou" in the song "La Vie Boheme", after her protest/performace was broken up by the police, and they all went to the Life Cafe to celebrate. They ran into Benny and the other "suits", whom they tried to embarrass and mock.
