Philadelphia is specifically mentioned by the doctor being interviewed on the talk show at the beginning of the movie. The location can further be inferred by listening to the place names mentioned by the characters in the helicopter as they fly away from the city.

Fran appears alone in the opening frames in the TV studio. Steven arrives soon afterward to tell Fran to meet on the roof for the helicopter escape. Dr. Frankenstein gets the Frankenstein name because of his morbid and bloody lab work on the zombies.

Tom and Judy are at a gas pump trying to fuel Tom's truck when the gas pump and truck ignite, and then explode. This sets the stage for the goriest sequence in the movie, or in any movie made before that time, where the zombies tear the charred bodies apart and feast on limbs and organs.

The black-and-white film coupled with the night-time fire lit lighting actually make the scene more terrifying, clearly showing organs and bits of flesh and yet leaving the types of organs somewhat to the imagination.

Dario Argento was the person who originally approached Romero with the idea for a sequel to "Night of the Living Dead", which had been a huge hit in Europe. Argento forwarded a significant amount of production money in return for the right to re-edit the film and release it in Europe, and Argento did so, renaming the film "Zombie". Dario Argento's version was significantly less gory, but heavier on dialogue.

In the original "Night of the Living Dead", Barbara was shell-shocked, almost helpless, and hysterical to the point of melodrama. In the 1990 remake, Barbara was transformed into a fiery, capable woman of the 90's, even trading in her skirt for a pair of pants in the middle of the film.

In the remake, Barbara even chalks up an impressive tally of destroyed zombies both hand-to-hand and by firearm. Times change!

Answer: Radiation Exposure

You can hear the radiation explanation as the characters listen to the radio in the middle of the film. The radiation supposedly came from a satellite that burned-up in the atmosphere. Those were the days indeed; radiation found its way into a lot of horror and sci-fi films, especially pre-1970, reflecting the fears of the population at the time.

This zombie was apparently a Hare Krishna in life and wore robes, not blue jeans. Fran fought him off with flares for a while, then the other characters returned and Roger dispatched the Krishna-zombie with the butt of a gun so as not to attract more walking corpses.

Karen has no lines in the film, being unconscious from her introduction due to having been "bitten by one of those things". She rises as a zombie herself and kills her mother in the basement of the farmhouse with a trowel. The trowel is the most lethal weapon used directly against a human by a zombie until we see one use a pistol in "Day of the Dead".

The corpse of Barbara's brother Johnny does the deed, as Romero plays with circular horror. Tom Savini's remake also plays in a circle, but in that film Barbara personally dispatches the zombie that killed her brother, and later finds Johnny's corpse in the bed of a pick-up, piled by civic-minded rednecks for disposal along with several others.

Ben is mistaken for a zombie by the ragtag group of police and hunters that approach the house in the morning and is shot in the head at long range.

Steele, the beefy, boorish soldier, puts a bullet through his head in "Day of the Dead" as zombies approach. He won't get up again. Peter cocks his gun and almost does it in "Dawn of the Dead", but he changes his mind and escapes at the last second.

In the same film, an unnamed SWAT member does it in the housing project. Miguel commits suicide of a sort in "Day of the Dead", using himself as live bait to let the zombies into the underground complex on the freight elevator. He doesn't die of a head wound, however. Nobody kills themselves in "Night of the Living Dead".

The bulk of the movie takes place within the Seminole Storage Facility. That, coupled with the palm trees and alligator in the opening scene provide the best clues.
