Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (2000) Although he doesn't play the game any more, Memphis used to be a car thief, and a very good one at that. Now he's forced to come out of retirement and steal 50 cars, or his brother will be killed.

Answer: Gone in Sixty Seconds

Dominic Sena directed this action-packed movie, starring Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie. Cage did most of his own stunt driving, after attending a couple of race car driving schools. He enjoyed it so much that he has continued driving as a hobby. Jolie, as well as some of the other cast, also received some training in stunt driving, but their training was not as intensive as Cage's.
2. (2002) A law student before the war, Thomas Hart finds himself imprisoned in a P.O.W. camp, where he is forced to defend an African American officer accused of killing an openly prejudiced, fellow P.O.W. What Thomas doesn't realize is that the whole court martial is a smoke screen to cover up a planned escape, and a hit on a local German munitions plant. Unfortunately the murder is all too real, and someone is going to have to pay for it with his life.

Answer: Hart's War

Gregory Hoblit directed Colin Farrell as Thomas Hart, and Bruce Willis as the ranking Allied Officer. Edward Norton and Tobey Maguire had both entered into negotiations for the title role, but for some reason neither got the part.
3. (1978) If you were a high school student in the fifties, then you can probably relate to this musical about a bunch of seniors at Rydall High. It's a movie about Pink Ladies, and T-Birds, and high school dances, and 'Summer Love', and 'Greased Lightning'.

Answer: Grease

Randal Kleiser directed this fun movie starring Olivia Newton John, John Travolta and Stockard Channing. Apparently 'Grease' was intended as a more modern version of 'The Gift of the Magi', with each of the young lovers giving up something that they really cared about for the other. Unfortunately the message that hit me, when I saw it, was more along the lines of encouraging young girls to become tarts in order to get their guys.
4. (1998) Four young friends scrape together a lot of money to get one of their number into a high stakes poker game. Unfortunately the game is crooked, and before they know it they have only a week to pay back a cool half million pounds. Things get really complicated as they plan to steal the money from their dishonest neighbours, who are in turn stealing the money from some naive dope growers. Before you know it pretty much everyone, except our four young friends, is dead, including the crook that they owe the money to.

Answer: Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Guy Ritchie directed this very violent, very bizarre film that my daughter just adores. The film was dedicated to Lenny McLean, who played Barry the Baptist, a one time famous, bare knuckle fighter who died of cancer a month before the film's opening.
5. (2002) It's the year 2054, and criminals are being caught before they actually commit their crimes. This is possible because of the precognitive powers of three genetically engineered people. It seems like an ideal system until Detective John Anderton finds himself framed for the future murder of a man he's never met. With the shoe on the other foot, he finds he's unwilling to go quietly, without at least finding out about the man he's supposed to be killing.

Answer: Minority Report

Steven Spielberg directed Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell, to name a few. Three years before beginning work on the movie, Spielberg assembled a team of 16 experts on the future to give him a vision for the year 2054. The furturistic cars were mostly designed by Harold Belker, who also designed cars for 'Batman and Robin' and 'Armageddon'.
6. (2001) David, played by Tom Cruise, hasn't had to work very hard for anything, it's all been handed to him. But his life starts to get more than a touch bizarre after he's in a bad car accident with a jealous lover. In fact, he soon comes to realize that he never really recovered from the car accident, and the life that he thinks he's living is merely a fantasy.

Answer: Vanilla Sky

Cameron Crowe directed this very surreal film that was based on the movie 'Abre los Ojos' (1997). Interestingly enough Penelope Cruz starred in both films. There is a scene where Cruise's character finds himself all alone in the center of Times Square which was not achieved through computer magic. Believe it or not, Spielberg was given permission to shut down Times Square for one Sunday.
7. (1999) What if nothing is the way we think it is? What if life, as we think we know it, is nothing more than a gigantic fantasy being played to keep us placated while our energy is used to help some super-intelligent machines rule the world?

Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton and Allen Garfield reprise their roles under Tony Scott's direction. Apparently Sylvester Stallone was given first offer at playing the role of Foley when the first 'Beverly Hills Cop' was filmed.
9. (1995) One of the few remaining independent record stores is in financial trouble, and it's up to the staff to see that it doesn't get swallowed up by one of the big chains. Of course while they're working so hard to save the store, they get a better idea of who they are, and what makes them tick.

Answer: Empire Records

Allen Moyle directed, while Rory Cochrane, Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger starred. There is a sign by the cash register that reads 'Have A Nice Daze', and shows the logo for the movie 'Dazed and Confused', which also stars Rory Cochrane.
10. (2001) Because the U.S. hasn't yet entered the war, Captain Rafe McCawley volunteers to fly for The British Royal Air Force. When he is listed as M.I.A. his best friend and fellow pilot, Danny, falls in love with his girlfriend. Tensions run high when Rafe returns, until the Japanese attack, and all of a sudden the U.S. is very much in the war.

Answer: Pearl Harbor

Michael Bay directed this epic movie that starred Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Kate Beckinsale, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Alec Baldwin. Ashton Kutcher lost the role of Danny to Harnett, and Charlize Theron turned down the female lead. Apparently the amount of money that was spent on the production and promotion of the movie was pretty close to the amount of actual damage incurred in the attack.
11. (2003) A big time drug lord is being transferred to prison by L.A.P.D. But he's upped the ante by offering $100 million to anyone who can make him a free man, so they've called in their expert team to make the transfer as secure as they can.

Answer: X2

Bryan Singer directed this all star cast that included Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellan, Halle Berry, Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos. Cumming's make-up took eight hours to apply while Stamos' only took five hours.
13. (2001) A senator's daughter is kidnapped from her school, by one of her teachers, right out from under the Secret Service agents that were supposed to be guarding her. Alex Cross is dragged into the case, assisted by one of the guilt-ridden agents who failed to keep the little girl safe. But it soon turns out that not everything is as straight forward as it seems.

Answer: Along Came A Spider

Lee Tamahori directed this movie that starred Morgan Freeman, Monica Potter and Michael Wincott.
14. (2002) Toula is 30, Greek, and she works in her family's restaurant. She manages to break away from the family business, but not from the fact that she's Greek. Life gets really interesting when she falls in love with a W.A.S.P., who actually wants to marry her.

Answer: My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Nia Vardalos originally developed the idea as a one-woman play. Rita Wilson saw the play and suggested to her husband, Tom Hanks, that he produce it as a movie. Nia claims that when Hanks first called her with his offer, she hung up on him because she didn't believe that it was really him.
15. (2001) At one time they were all child prodigies, but now they're just a normal, okay so maybe not really normal, dysfunctional family. Years after abandoning them, and strapped for cash, their estranged father fakes a fatal illness, in order to be accepted back into the folds of his family.

Answer: The Royal Tenenbaums

Wes Anderson directed this bizarre film starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller and Luke and Owen Wilson. Both Hackman and Huston originally turned down the roles, until more scenes were written, which gave each of their characters more depth.
