A Few of My Favourite Movies From 1990-1993 Quiz

I was amazed to find that so many of my movies were made in 1991, the year that my son was born! Unfortunately there weren't quite enough to make an entire quiz, so I borrowed a couple from '90, '92, and '93.

Since the man that she really loves, Peter, is very negative about marriage she convinces herself that she's in love with Edward. But Edward lives in England, and our three confirmed bachelors have to find a way to prevent the marriage, or risk never seeing Mary again.

Answer: Three Men and a Little Lady

Emile Ardolino directed, and Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, Ted Danson and Nancy Travis starred. Robin Weisman was delightful as Mary and Christopher Cazenove was convincingly dislikeable as Edward.
In my humble opinion, this is one of the rare occasions where the sequel is better than the original. It's much more enjoyable without the silly drug subplot that's in the original.
2. (1991) Kathy Bates is an unhappy housewife who grows more self-accepting through the attentions of a young-at-heart senior, played by Jessica Tandy. Tandy entertains us all with flashback stories of her youth, when Idgie and Ruth ran the Whistle Stop Cafe and dealt with issues such as spousal abuse, racism and the KKK, and maybe even murder.

Answer: Fried Green Tomatoes

Jon Avnet directed, and Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker starred as Idgie and Ruth respectively. I really believe that Jessica Tandy's character was really Idgie grown old.
3. (1991) Laura and Martin seem like the perfect couple, they're young, they're beautiful and their house is gorgeous. The only problem is, Martin is very controlling and beats Laura badly any time she displeases him. Laura knows that he would kill her before he lets her go, so she carefully makes her escape plans, waiting years until everything is perfect. She orchestrates an accident so that he thinks she is dead, lost at sea, and then slips away in the dead of the night to rebuild. She finds a new town, a new job, and a new life, and is even feeling safe enough to start a new relationship when Martin tracks her down.

Answer: Sleeping With the Enemy

Joseph Ruben directed Julia Roberts and Patrick Bergin as Laura and Martin. Kevin Anderson is charming as the new boyfriend. This was the movie that convinced me that Julia Roberts could really act.
4. (1991) Accompanied by his Moorish friend, he returns from the Crusades, only to find his father murdered, his family properties appropriated, and nothing the way he left it. Deep in the forest he finds a bunch of exiled villagers who he rallies into a band and teaches them how to fight back against the sheriff and his men.

Answer: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Kevin Reynolds directed Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Christian Slater in this wonderful version of the age-old story. Alan Rickman is delightfully evil as the Sheriff and Sean Connery appears, uncredited, as King Richard returning from the Crusades.
5. (1991) Two friends try to leave their less-than-satisfying lives behind for a weekend of fun, but one of them shoots and kills a man while he's trying to rape her friend. The next thing they know they're running from the law in a '66 Thunderbird, heading for Mexico. Things go from bad to worse when a young Brad Pitt steals their cash and they have to resort to robbery, which only lets the police know where they are.

Answer: Thelma and Louise

Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis are fantastic in this powerful movie, directed by Ridley Scott.
6. (1991) Mike is a private detective trying to find the identity of a beautiful young woman who is suffering from amnesia. All he has to go on is the fact that she is plagued by nightmares of the murder of a famous pianist by her husband. This was a real incident that had happened years before. A local hypnotist offers his services, and it soon begins to look as if she is the pianist reborn and Mike is the murdering husband. Egged on by the hypnotist she becomes fearful that history is going to repeat itself, and Mike is going to kill her again...or is he?

Answer: Dead Again

Kenneth Branagh both starred and directed in this suspenseful mystery. Emma Thompson (Branagh's wife at the time) starred opposite him and Derek Jacobi played the hypnotist. Robin Williams has a small role as a bitter ex-psychiatrist who works in a meat cooler and offers free advice.
7. (1991) Peter is all grown up, with a family of his own to take care of, even if he's too busy to spend any time with them. When his children are kidnapped and Wendy tells him who he really is, he refuses to believe any of it, not even when a helpful little fairie knocks him off his feet and drags him away to the only place where he can save his children. But in order to save them he has to learn how to believe.

Answer: Hook

Steven Spielberg directs this delightful movie that is just chock full of cameo appearance. Robin Williams is perfect as Peter Pan, Dustin Hoffman makes an extraordinary Hook, and Julia Roberts twinkles as Tinkerbell.
8. (1991) The President has been assassinated and the world is blaming a single assassin. But District Attorney, Jim Garrison, stumbles upon some information that convinces him that there had to be a conspiracy, and it seemed to be somehow linked to his own city. Answer: Scent of a Woman

Al Pacino finally got a much deserved Oscar for his portrayal Of Colonel Frank Slade, under the direction of Martin Brest. Chris O'Donnell was wonderful as Charlie, the earnest young man whose integrity convinces Frank not to kill himself.
10. (1992) Two sisters, one married the other not, leave the family dairy farm to try out for the first female professional baseball league. The league only exists because the war is on and a lot of the male baseball players have enlisted.

Answer: A League of Their Own

Penny Marshall directed Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell, to name a few. Tom Hanks was absolutely wonderful as their manager, a drunk who starts off believing that girls can't play ball, but soon believes otherwise.
11. (1993) Tracy and Andy are a young married couple who have just bought their dream home and want nothing more in the world than to have a baby. To help pay for the renovations to their home they take in a border, Jed, a doctor that Andy knew from university. An emergency medical procedure causes the baby Tracy's carrying to abort, and leaves her unable to ever have children. 15. (1993) He's a musician who wants to be a star, she's got a voice that can take him there so he marries her. Unfortunately he hasn't got what it takes to be really great, even though she does.
