Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1954) He 'could have been a contender', but instead found himself drawn into the violent world of his boss, a corrupt union leader. After witnessing a murder, he's pressured by the sister of the victim and a local Priest to testify, and help put an end to racketeering. Sometimes making the right choice can be very difficult.

Answer: On the Waterfront

Elia Kazan directed Marlon Brando to an Oscar in this movie that also starred Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb and Rod Steiger. This also marked the film debut for Eva Marie Saint, who received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
2. (1981) Ned is a small town lawyer who finds himself falling in love with Matty, the wife of a rich, older man. During a summer heat wave they plot the murder of her husband, so they can be together and inherit the money. But it soon turns out that Matty has other plans and Ned finds that he's been set-up to take the fall.

Answer: Body Heat

Lawrence Kasdan directed this steamy movie that starred William Hurt, Kathleen Turner and Ted Danson. There is one scene where, seeking to escape the heat, the lovers are lying together in a tub full of ice and water. Brrrr!
3. (1962) A British Lieutenant, played by Peter O'Toole, is stationed in Arabia during WW1, in this fact-based, character driven movie. His role is supposed to be that of liaision, but he becomes swept up in the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire, becoming very much an Arab Nationalist himself.

Answer: Lawrence of Arabia

David Lean directed this all-star cast which included Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn and Omar Sharif. Lean wanted Albert Finney for the title role, but Katharine Hepburn lobbied successfully with the producers to have O'Toole cast. This movie is 216 minutes long and does not have one single woman in a speaking role.
4. (1942) Rick Blaine, played by Humphrey Bogart, is a former freedom fighter who now owns a nightclub in North Africa. Victor Lazlo is a resistance leader who is trying to get out of Africa and escape capture by the Gestapo. Lazlo and his wife Ilsa, played by Ingrid Bergman, arrive in Rick's bar, because Rick is one of the few men who can help them get away. Unfortunately Ilsa and Rick are former lovers, who are still very much in love.

Answer: Casablanca

Right up until the filming of the final scene, none of the cast knew which of the men in her life Ilsa was going to choose. When Bergman asked Michael Curtiz, the director, who she was supposed to be in love with, he told her to play it both ways. Unfortunately the final scene was not the last one filmed, so there were a couple of scenes in the movie where the cast did already know the outcome.
5. (1969) It's 1940 and the British Royal Air Force has a real struggle on its hands, fighting to control British air space and prevent a German invasion. The war might have had a very different ending without the tireless efforts of these courageous flyers.

Answer: The Battle of Britain

Guy Hamilton directed an all-star cast including, Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Christopher Plummer, and Michale Redgrave. Because of the need for retakes, more ammunition was used in filming than had been used in the actual battle. Adolf Galland, who was a Luftwaffe pilot during the war, was hired as a technical consultant.
6. (1976) Based on a novel by Jack Higgins, this movie tells the story of 16 German paratroopers who landed in England during WWII, and very nearly succeeded in kidnapping Winston Churchill.

Answer: The Eagle Has Landed

John Sturges directed this one, starring Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, Robert Duvall, Donald Pleasance, Jenny Agutter and Judy Geeson.
7. (1979) Through the lead character of Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse fictionalizes his own life and experiences from when he was working on the play 'Chicago'. The dancing is nothing short of incredible and his portrayal of himself as a womanizing, drug using dancer is brutal.

Answer: All That Jazz

Yes, this really is one of my husband's favourite movies! Richard Dreyfuss was originally cast in the title role, but dropped out during rehearsals, and was replaced by Roy Scheider. Even though Ann Reinking played a part that was based on her real life relationship with Fosse, she still had to go through several stages of audition before being given the part.
8. (1981) Nobody really believes in werewolves these days, so if you get attacked by one while on holiday in Europe, you'll probably manage to convince yourself that it really wasn't a werewolf that mauled you and killed your friend. Until the next full moon of course, when you begin to realize that those disturbing dreams that you've been having maybe aren't really dreams after all.

Answer: An American Werewolf in London

Studio executives wanted Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi to play the tourists, but director John Landis refused, giving the parts to David Naughton and Griffin Dunne. All the songs in the movie contain the word 'moon' in their titles.
9. (1983) The year is 1942 and the setting is a Japanese prison camp run by Captain Yanoi. Yanoi has nothing but disdain for the men in his camp, believing them cowards because they chose surrender over death. He has firmly entrenched beliefs about honour, discipline, and glory, and nobody is going to shake those beliefs. So he's not prepared for the strange battle of wills and attraction that arrives when Major Jack Celliers, played by David Bowie, is transferred into his camp.

Answer: Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence

Ryuichi Sakamoto, a well known musician in Japan, starred as Yonoi and also wrote and performed the hauntingly beautiful score. Nagisa Oshima directed, and Tom Conti starred as the only bilingual prisoner, Colonel Tom Lawrence. The other actors playing POW's in the camp used their own names when answering roll call.
10. (1981) Lucy lives with her crippled, embittered husband and their young son on an isolated island off the coast of England. When Faber washes up on their island after a storm, she welcomes the diversion of nursing him back to health, and soon falls in love with him. Unfortunately she finds out that he's a German spy, with information that could alter the course of D-Day. It's a good thing that he's fallen in love with her too, because she's the only thing that's standing between him and a rendezvous with a German submarine that is waiting to pick him up.

Answer: The Eye of the Needle

Richard Marquand directed this movie based on a Ken Follett novel. Donald Sutherland played the spy code-named 'the Needle' because of his preference for using a thin switchblade to dispose of his obstacles. Kate Nelligan played Lucy, a woman who has finally found love and has to choose between it and her country.
11. (1973) There have been many versions and interpretations of this tale, by Dumas, about a young man who seeks honour and glory in the king's musketeers. This version is notable for its remarkable cast and very funny scenes by one of Hollywood's leading (at the time) sex symbols, Raquel Welch.

Answer: The Three Musketeers

Richard Lester directed this movie, which he originally considered as a vehicle for the Beatles. As much as I love the Beatles, I think he made a wise choice in opting for the cast that he did. They included, Michael York, Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Frank Finlay, Faye Dunaway and Charlton Heston.
12. (1995) When he was a young boy he lost both his father and brother in the fight against English oppression, but it wasn't until they killed his wife that he got mad enough to fight back. Once provoked, he became their absolute worst nightmare, in this movie that was loosely based on the life of William Wallace, in 13th century Scotland.

Answer: Braveheart

Mel Gibson directed and starred in the title role. Some of the battle scenes had to be reshot because extras were captured on film wearing sunglasses and watches.
13. (1978) Gloria Mundy, played by Goldie Hawn, is a shy librarian whose friends are encouraging her to be more outgoing. So she picks up a hitch-hiker, and accepts a date from him. The next thing she knows, she's in the middle of a bizarre crime involving dwarves and albinos, and a plot to assassinate the Pope. Tony Carlson, played by Chevy Chase, may not be the best cop in the world, but together they manage to save the day, and fall in love while they're at it.

Answer: Foul Play

Hawn and Chase are very funny together, under Colin Higgins' direction. Gloria Mundy means 'So passes the glory of the world' in Latin.
14. (1979) Sean Connery, Donald Sutherland and Lesley Anne Down band together to steal a shipment of gold from a moving train. Their elaborate plan involves keys that must be copied, a coffin, a dead cat and a brothel.

Answer: The Great Train Robbery

Michael Crichton not only directed the movie, but he also wrote the book, which was loosely based on an actual, similar crime committed in 1855. Crichton's hair caught fire when the steam engine, that he was riding in while filming, spewed burning embers.
15. (1972) There is nothing Andrew, played by Laurence Olivier, likes better than a good game, and with his income, he can afford to play for some pretty high stakes. Milo, played by Michael Caine, is a hairdresser who is having an affair with Andrew's wife. Andrew invites Milo over, to play a game which he claims will give Milo enough money to take his wife permanently off his hands. But Andrew hates to lose, and the game turns out to really be about revenge and humiliation.

Answer: Sleuth

Joseph Mankiewicz directed this film in which the entire cast was nominated for Best Actor Oscars. The only other movie to accomplish this was 'Give 'em Hell, Harry'.
