Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What happens to the Fred Astaire-style tap dancer in the archive film at the beginning of the movie?

Answer: He is eaten by his own shoes

This is one of the more wacky moments - for those of you who don't remember him, he briefly dances onto the stage as part of the Triplettes de Belleville's act, right after the African dancer.
2. Which of these things does Mme. Souza not buy to try and cheer up the young Champion?

Answer: A piano

The piano is already one of their possessions - Mme. Souza just tries to play it to please her grandson. (She is pretty bad, unfortunately.) The only gift which goes down well is, of course, the tricycle. Thus begins Champion's career as a cyclist.
3. Which parts of Champion's body are ridiculously well-built?

Answer: His legs

All that cycling up hills has given him hilariously beefy thighs and calves and a very thin top half. Most of the people in the cartoon look so absurd that when you first see them you cannot help but laugh.
4. Name one of the Triplettes de Bellville.

Answer: Rose

You will have had to check the credits to know this one for certain. The triplets are virtually indistinguishable, and their actual names are never mentioned during the film.
5. What is written on the blimp over Belleville, as our heroes first arrive there?

Answer: In Vino Veritas

This Latin slogan, meaning 'the truth is in wine', has been adopted by the mafia-run French Wine Center. It is also written in mosaic on the floor of the Center's hallway.
6. Champion's dog is called Fido.

Answer: False

The dog is called Bruno, according to his food bowl.
7. What kind of vessel do Mme. Souza and the dog use to cross the Atlantic?

Answer: A pedalo

In what is easily the best scene in the film, the two heroes battle against an Atlantic storm in pursuit of the ship on which Champion has been taken - but in nothing more sturdy than a little hired pedalo. (Pedalos are the small two-seater boats you usually take out on a lake or pond and in which the two passengers pedal to power it.) The choice of music here is perfect.
8. Which composer wrote the mass featured in the Atlantic crossing scene?

Answer: Mozart

Mozart's Mass in C Minor ensures that this incredible scene is unforgettable. The music seems to emulate the swelling waves. The contrast between the tiny, vulnerable pedalo and both the vast sea, and the far larger ship the pedalo is following, serves to make the scene very impressionable.
9. What colour is the cap Champion wears when he participates in the Tour de France?

Answer: Red

This is the cap which Mme. Souza uses to help Bruno sniff out Champion when he is kidnapped.
10. Which French pop star sings the theme for 'Belleville Rendez-Vous'?

Answer: M

This guy is seriously weird-looking. His hair is styled into the letter 'M' (hence his name). His latest single is 'Qui de nous deux', in case you are interested. You can see him in the music video for the song if you have the DVD; if not, you can just enjoy the catchy song.
