Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What word did Bud use repeatedly when asking Violet to go to California with him?

Answer: "Please."

Violet was the cashier at the gas station convenience store Bud stopped at on his way out of town. She asked where he was going and he told her he was headed for California. He asked if she'd like to come with him, but she pointed out that she didn't even know him. Bud looked at her and pleaded sincerely, "Please. Please. Please come with me." His earnestness seemed enough to convince Violet, and she left the store with a note for her aunt and uncle. Bud drove her to her house so she could collect her things, but while she was inside he drove off without her.
2. What did Bud tell Daisy's parents about having done as a child with Daisy?

Answer: played in their pool

Bud stopped at Daisy's parents' house and introduced himself. Though she didn't remember him, Daisy's mother let him in to their kitchen. Bud looked at Daisy's bunny a little before sitting down. Daisy's mother expressed concern for Daisy, not having heard from her. Bud didn't volunteer any information about Daisy, but instead told the woman about when he was a kid and would come over to play in Daisy's pool because his own family's pool wasn't as good.

Then Bud left and set back on the road.
3. At the pet store, about which animal did Bud inquire as to the life span?

Answer: bunny

The clerk told him that a bunny's life span was 5-6 years. Bud asked if you couldn't feed them some special food to make them live longer, and the clerk told him there wasn't.
4. Where was the name of the woman at the rest stop visible?

Answer: on her purse

Her purse was marked with her name, Lilly. Bud passed her on the way to getting a soda and passed her again on the way back to his van. Then he paused and came back to the table. He sat next to her and asked if she was okay. That led to soft kissing between the two before Bud wordlessly stood and left.
5. Where did Bud take Rose (the Las Vegas prostitute) for a meal?

Answer: McDonald's

He was driving around the city and she was the third girl who came to his window to offer a "date." He turned her down, but drove around the block and came back. He confirmed that her name was Rose (it was on her necklace) and asked her to get lunch with him.

She said it sounded nice, but that she had to make her money. He ended up buying her McDonalds, then dropped her off on the street, seemingly before any services had been rendered. He left her with some additional money, presumably to make up for the time she spent with him.
6. Who or what was sitting on the sidewalk outside Bud and Daisy's house in Los Angeles?

Answer: chair

The house didn't look as though it had been well cared for. There was a sofa chair on the sidewalk out front and the house had an air of abandonment.
7. Where did Bud stay in Los Angeles?

Answer: Best Western hotel

He went to the house first, but after ringing the bell and knocking on the door, gave up on anyone answering. He left a note for Daisy on the door and when he checked into the hotel, called the front desk with instructions in case she called or stopped by.
8. What did Daisy recount having done in the past after eating dinner?

Answer: sitting on Bud's lap

When she came to the hotel room and was trying to reconnect with Bud, she reminded him of how she used to sit on his lap after dinner and they'd kiss. He allowed her to sit on his lap again, but the moment of tenderness was short-lived.
9. Why did Daisy keep going into the bathroom in Bud's room?

Answer: to smoke crack

When she headed for the bathroom the second time, she told Bud she'd drank a lot of water before coming over so as to excuse the frequency of the visits.
10. What devastating event did NOT befall Bud and Daisy?

Answer: Bud died

In their final encounter, it was revealed that Bud and Daisy had gone to a party together when she'd been pregnant with their child. She was approached by a couple of guys from the party, who offered her a smoke. She took it, thinking it was pot, but it was crack and she had a bad reaction. Bud found her in a bedroom, passed out with her clothes pulled off, being raped by the two men while others looked on.

He left her there instead of trying to help, but came back later to see her body being rolled on a stretcher into an ambulance.

She had gotten sick, thrown up and choked to death. The hotel encounter with Daisy was in fact all in Bud's imagination, and it was clear that everything he did was motivated by his guilt and grief over Daisy's death.
