Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Steve Mcqueen and Bud Ekins both drove during the famous car chase around San Francisco in the film "Bullitt". But what type of car did they drive, as the character Frank Bullitt?

Answer: Ford Mustang

Two Ford Mustangs were used for the filming of "Bullitt". One was written off, but the other was bought by a private owner. Apparently it now sits in a barn somewhere in America and hasn't been driven for years. The first ever Ford Mustang was built in Michigan in 1964 and was based on the Ford Falcon.
2. In the 2003 film "Highwaymen" James 'Rennie' Cray (James Caviezel) chased the killer of his wife around America in what type of car?

Answer: Plymouth Barracuda

Rennie Cray, in his 1968 Plymouth Barracuda chased a serial killer whose murder weapon was always his 1972 Cadillac Eldorado.
The early Plymouth Barracudas were famous for having a huge strange-looking rear window. This distinctive feature was dropped before the production of the much cooler 1968 Barracuda.
3. The General Lee was a very famous car from "The Dukes of Hazzard". What type of car was the General Lee, that Bo and Luke drove around Hazzard County?

Answer: Dodge Charger

The General Lee was a 1969 Dodge Charger in the film and the T.V series. Throughout the T.V series about 300 Dodge Chargers were bought and destroyed during filming. The 2005 film "The Dukes of Hazzard" was pretty awful, so the General Lee is more fondly remembered from the original T.V series.
Dodge Chargers were produced from 1966 until 1978, although the last B-Body Charger (General Lee style) was built in 1974.
4. Although James Bond drove several cars throughout the films, the best and most famous car appeared for the 1st time in "Goldfinger". So what was Bond's car, that came complete with machine guns, rotating number plate and ejector seat?

Answer: Aston Martin DB5

For "Goldfinger" the producers had to pay for the two Aston Martins used for filming, but after the films success, they never had to pay for a car again. The Aston Martin DB5 was basically an improved Aston Martin DB4. The engine was increased to a 4.0 L, giving it a top speed of around 141 mph.
5. The "Italian Job" featured Charlie Croker and his mates driving around Turin with stolen bars of gold bullion in the back of three cars. What kind of cars were the three used in this film?

Answer: Mini Coopers

The three Mini Coopers where red, white and blue, signifying the colours of the British Union Flag. The British Motor Corporation started producing Minis in 1959 because they were very fuel efficient at a time when there was a shortage of fuel.
6. The drivers of which car won the race in the 1981 film "The Cannonball Run"?

Answer: Lamborghini Countach

Two women in a black Lamborghini won the Cannonball Run, after it turned into a foot race for the last few hundred metres. The film was based on an actual illegal race that took place during the 1970s called the Canonball Run.
The instantly recognizable Countach was produced by Italian car manufacturers Lamborghini between 1974 and 1990, when it was replaced with the Lamborghini Diablo.
7. Burt Reynolds played the Bandit in the film "Smokey and the Bandit", but what kind of car was he driving whilst trying to avoid Sheriff Buford T. Justice and the rest of the Smokeys?

Answer: Pontiac Trans-Am

The Bandit used his black Trans-Am to distract the police away from his partner, who was driving illegal alcohol cross-country in his truck.
There were four generations of Trans-Am built by Pontiac. The one from "Smokey and the Bandit" was a second Generation. KITT from the T.V series "Knight Rider" was a third generation Trans-Am.
8. What type of car was Herbie, the star of several films, such as "The Love Bug" and "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo"?

Answer: Volkswagen Beetle

Herbie was a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, painted pearl white with a red, white and blue stripe running over top of the car from bumper to bumper. His racing number was 53.
Although designed as the people's car, the distinctive and much loved Beetle was used by the German Army as military vehicles during the Second World War.
9. Kowalski took bets that he could drive from Colorado to San Francisco in under 15 hours, in the cult 1971 classic "Vanishing Point". But what car was it that he drove towards the coast?

Answer: Dodge Challenger

Kowalski was driving to San Francisco in a white 1970 Dodge Challenger which belonged to a car delivery service.
Dodge Challengers were only built between 1970 and 1974 and were based on the Plymouth Barracuda.
10. What type of car was driven mainly by David Starsky in the film and T.V series "Starsky and Hutch"?

Answer: Ford Gran Torino

David Starsky's car of choice, for undercover policework, was a bright red Ford Gran Torino with a very conspicuous white stripe down the side. It was probably not the best choice of car for undercover work but the "Striped Tomato" was a great looking car. Torinos were first produced in 1968, but the 1974 to 1976 models were the ones used in "Starsky and Hutch".
