Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starring in this dystopian movie is an all black 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT Hardtop. Dubbed the Interceptor, nothing was uncatchable when its supercharger was unleashed. What Aussie movie, from 1979, is this?

Answer: Mad Max

Set in the near future, "Mad Max" features Mel Gibson as a disenchanted cop seeking revenge for the deaths of his family and buddy.
Due to the extremely tight film budget, the producers tried to sell the car after filming wrapped up. As there were no interested buyers, the car ended up with the film's production mechanic. When the sequel, "Mad Max 2", was given the green light, director George Miller had to buy it back. It now resides in a museum in Florida USA.
2. Our next starring vehicle has seen better days, like its owner, the Dude. Originally a 1973 Ford Grand Torino, it is hardly recognisable as such by the end of the movie. From what 1998 movie did this car play role?

Answer: The Big Lebowski

Jeffery "The Dude" Lebowski is mistaken by two thugs for his millionaire namesake, who is in debt to their boss. The thugs urinate on the Dude's rug as a demonstration that they mean business. The Dude then seeks retribution for his soiled rug from his millionaire namesake, which leads to many complications in the Dude's life. Originally the script called for a Chrysler LeBaron, but John Goodman was too big to fit in it, so a Gran Torino was substituted.

By the end of the movie the Dude's car has been vandalised, stolen, set alight and crashed into a garbage skip.

There were two vehicles used in the movie, one was totalled during filming and the other destroyed in "The X-Files" (2001).
3. This yellow 1973 Volkswagon Kombi van is used to transport a dysfunctional family from Albuquerque to California, for seven year old Olive to compete in a beauty pageant. What movie, made in 2006, is this?

Answer: Little Miss Sunshine

The dysfunctional Hoover family take a cross country trip for youngest daughter Olive to compete in a beauty pageant. Everyone in the family, including the iconic Kombi van, have their unique issues to deal with in their race to get to the pageant on time. Olive's burlesque rendition of "Superfreak", although not appreciated by the pageant audience, is worth the wait.
Five VW Kombi vans were used in making the movie. One of the vans is now on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles USA.
4. This 1966 Ford Thunderbird carries two ladies attempting to escape from justice to the safety of Mexico. Alas they never make it and the Thunderbird, along with its two occupants, is last seen plunging into a canyon. What is this road movie from 1991?

Answer: Thelma and Louise

After shooting and killing an attempted rapist, two women decide, based on their experiences in their male dominated world, that it's not worth hanging around for justice, and attempt to escape in their Thunderbird.
Five Thunderbirds were used in the movie. One sold for $65,000 in Italy in 2008 and another sold for $71,500 in Arizona USA in 2008.
5. This 1974 Dodge Monaco transports two brothers around the US state of Illinois to 'put the band back together'. What cult movie from 1980 is this?

Answer: The Blues Brothers

Based on the characters from "Saturday Night Live", Jake and Elwood Blues set out in their Bluesmobile on a mission to put their band back together and raise $5000 to save the orphanage where they were raised.
103 cars were destroyed making the movie, a record at the time. When the Bluesmobile was traveling under the elevated train line, it was traveling at 118 miles per hour. The producers only had permission for two 100 mph runs and added stunt pedestrians in the second run for realism.
6. This series of English spy films would not be the same without the classic 1963 Aston Martin DB5. It appeared in a number of the films, but which one was the first?

Answer: Goldfinger

"Goldfinger" is the third movie in the highly successful series of "Bond" films. It stars Sean Connery as James Bond, who must prevent the villian Goldfinger from stealing the gold from Fort Knox.
For the movie, Aston Martin did not wish to provide two cars for production and the producers had to purchase them. Of course after the success of the movie and subsequent surge in sales and prestige for Aston Martin, this was never a problem again.
7. The car in this film is a much loved red 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder SWB. In fact its owner loves it so much that he never drives it. Unfortunately his son and two friends take the car for a day of mischief and mayhem. At the end of an eventful day, in an attempt to wipe off the car's mileage, our poor vehicle falls off its jack and crashes to the bottom of a gully. What hit movie, from 1986, is this?

Answer: Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Ferris Bueller takes a day off school to explore Chicago with his girlfriend Sloane and best friend Cameron. The trio 'borrow' Cameron's father's Ferrari and take to the streets of Chicago. During the course of the day they make their way through the Loop, a German-American Day parade, an upmarket restaurant, the Art Institute and a baseball game at Wrigley Field, all the time trying to avoid hapless school principal Rooney. Fortunately the car used in the movie was only a fibreglass replica and so no Ferraris were destroyed.

There were only 104 of the California Spyder produced specifically for the American market. After the movie was released the producers received a number of complaints from Ferrari enthusiasts complaining about the destruction of the vehicle.
8. Our next scene stealer is an orange 1969 Dodge Charger with a large Confederate flag on its roof. It is usually seen escaping from the local sherriff by performing incredible jumps that the police cannot replicate without crashing. Originally a television series from 1979 to 1985, what movie from 2005 is this?

Answer: The Dukes of Hazard

Moonshine running cousins Bo and Luke Duke must prevent county commissioner Boss Hogg from taking the family farm and turning it into a coal mine. After a series of tense car chases, the Dukes reveal Boss Hogg's plans for Hazzard County to the townsfolk to save the day.
So many cars were destroyed during the TV series that the producers would offer to purchase any Dodge Charger that they spotted on the street. For the movie two Dodge Chargers were purchased for $1 each and sold back to their owner for $1.25.
9. Who can forget our next starring vehicle, a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12? This time-travelling car went on to star in two sequels. What blockbuster movie, made in 1985, was this?

Answer: Back to the Future

Marty McFly is a 1980's teenager who accidentally gets sent back to 1955 in his friend 'Doc' Emmet's DeLorean time machine. Unfortunately Marty bumps into his future parents and prevents them meeting as his mother is actually more smitten with Marty than his father. Marty's dilemma - how to get his parents to meet up, and how to make his way back home to 1985. Six DeLoreans were used in the making of the "Back to the Future" series, plus a seventh all fibreglass model for exterior shots and airborne scenes. Following the movie release, body kits were sold which made DeLoreans look like time machines.
10. This next movie features a 1963 Model 117 Volkswagen Beetle as an unlikely racecar. The first of five films in a series, what is this movie from 1968?

Answer: The Love Bug

Jim Douglas, a past his prime racecar driver, becomes the owner of a Volkswagen Beetle (Herbie) which can drive itself. Once Jim lets Herbie do his thing on the racetrack, he is on his way to winning the championship, despite the efforts of his less than sporting rivals. To make Herbie appear to be self-driving the producers installed a system of cogs and pulleys for a driver sitting in the rear seat (out of camera view) to steer and control the car with. Dean Jones, who plays the part of the race driver in the movie, owns the only surviving, fully tricked out Herbie capable of squirting oil and opening its own doors.

The racing number "53" was chosen by one of the producers who was a fan of baseball player Don Drysdale.
