Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who plays the role of Victor Frankenstein?

Answer: Peter Cushing

Peter Cushing asked for the role of Victor Frankenstein after reading the script. He felt that he could add another dimension to the character of Baron Frankenstein, giving him a more human and less "mad scientist" persona. As Victor Frankenstein, Cushing is at his best, playing the dual personality of a dedicated scientist and an obsessed practitioner of never before performed science. Cushing succeeded so well, he went on to reprise the role six times. Christopher Lee plays The Creature. Karloff and Clive appeared in Universal's "Frankenstein" as the monster and the doctor respectively.
2. Who plays the part of The Creature?

Answer: Christopher Lee

Heavily made up for his part, Christopher Lee is not easy to recognize in the nonspeaking role of The Creature. Created by Baron Frankenstein from assorted body parts and a stolen brain, his character has only one compulsion: to kill. Early in his acting career, Lee found that his height,(6'5"), was a detriment, and was weighing the choice of coming to America, when Hammer Productions offered him this role.

He was glad to receive it, and it subsequently led to a long career in horror, most notably in his recurring role as Count Dracula in Hammer films.
3. What is the first successful experiment in reanimation that Victor performed?

Answer: He brings a puppy back to life.

After Victor has grown to manhood, he and his assistant/mentor Paul manage to bring a puppy back to life with their experiments in biological sciences. Paul wants to use the knowledge of their discovery in longevity for work in surgical procedures, while Victor of course has much bigger and different plans. We see in this scene the combination of dedication and obsession that Cushing manifests in the character of Victor.
4. How does Victor procure the brain for his creature?

Answer: He kills Prof. Bernstein and removes his brain.

Victor has invited an old and distinguished colleague, Prof. Bernstein, to his home, ostensibly as a guest. While showing the Professor a painting, Victor pushes him off a second floor landing, killing him. Then in one of the best scenes in the movie, he is confronted by Paul in the family crypt, as he is removing the poor old man's brain. Victor's obsession with his work is portrayed beautifully by Cushing in this scene.
5. Who does The Creature NOT kill?

Answer: Elizabeth

The Creature escapes from the laboratory and kills the old man and boy in the forest. No information is given to us about these characters. They seem to be present only to parallel the original Frankenstein. Victor has been having an affair with Justine, his household maid.

When she confronts him about his impending marriage to Elizabeth, his cousin, she declares she is pregnant with his child. Victor sends her to the laboratory to be killed because she threatens to tell Elizabeth of their affair and her pregnancy.
6. How is The Creature caught in the forest?

Answer: Paul shoots it.

Victor and Paul track The Creature in the woods. Although Paul thinks Victor has sent for help from the village, Victor has no intention of killing it. Luckily, Paul is armed and shoots the creature in the head, much to Victor's displeasure.
7. How much damage is inflicted on the creature's brain?

Answer: All of these

It's no wonder The Creature is unstable. Its brain is bashed against the wall of the crypt while Victor and Paul are struggling over it. The glass vial it is in is shattered in the process and Victor has to pick the glass out with tweezers. Finally Paul puts a bullet through it. Victor sums it up for Paul. "What you see here is your handiwork as much as mine."
8. When The Creature attacks Elizabeth, how is it stopped?

Answer: Victor sets it ablaze and it falls into a vat of acid.

While Paul is heading to the village for help, Victor first shoots at The Creature, wounding Elizabeth in the process. He then flings a lantern at The Creature, setting it on fire. The Creature then falls through a skylight into a vat of acid.
9. Who is Victor relating this tale to?

Answer: The village priest

In the opening scene, Victor is awaiting execution in prison, and sends for the village priest because he can think of no one else. He believes people will listen to what he has to say. Cushing has endowed the character of Victor Frankenstein with multi-layered personalities; the audience is given a taste of Victor's mood swings in this scene.
10. Where is Victor being led to his execution at the end of the film?

Answer: The guillotine

The final scene in the movie causes more than one viewer to do a double take. Not only do we see Victor doomed to die by the guillotine, but Elizabeth and Paul are not exactly put out by this course of events. In fact, one is left wondering if there is something going on between them, and Victor's death is a convenience, rather than a hardship.
