Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An American girl flies to France to try to get her fiancee back from the hands of a French woman with whom he's fallen in love. She meets a French con artist in the process, and after a series of mishaps, they both fall in love instead. Which movie is this?

Answer: French Kiss

Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline are brilliant in this heartwarming but hilarious romantic comedy made in 1995. Ryan plays the role of a completely uptight woman who is addicted to vitamins, afraid of flying and who has all her life planned out to the last detail.

She undergoes a liberating metamorphosis in the beautiful city of Paris - assisted by con artist Kline, a man with no scruples whatsoever, but one who has a deep longing to return to his roots in the French countryside, where he can set up his own vineyard. All's well that ends well.

The unlikely pair end up together in a perfect match. (Question and additional information submitted by Creedy)
2. This film saw Alec Guinness play the part of several people from the same aristocratic family who were, successively, in line for the family treasures and title. However, a distant relative gradually tried to kill them off in a series of bizarre 'accidents' so he could become first in line to inherit. It was made at a famous British studio. What was the name of the film?

Answer: Kind Hearts and Coronets

'Kind Hearts and Coronets' was made in 1949 at the wonderful Ealing Film Studios. Alec Guinness played eight characters from the D'Ascoyne family who were gradually whittled down by Dennis Price. Did he get away with it? Watch the film and find out. 'Passport to Pimlico' was another film from 'Ealing' that starred Stanley Holloway, in which a document was found, giving the right of Pimlico to be independent from the rest of Britain.

The other two films were titles of Agatha Christie novels which were filmed - the first with Hercule Poirot and the second with Miss Marple as the respective detectives. (Question and additional information submitted by baker13)

Answer: The Overlook

'The Overlook' had been built on an ancient burial ground and as such held many dark secrets. Jack's son Danny had the ability to 'shine' and as a consequence had terrifying premonitions about the hotel. As Jack's mental stability took a sinister downward turn, his family found themselves fighting for their lives. Stay out of room 237! (Question and additional information submitted by Firepixie18)

Answer: The Sound of Music

'The Sound of Music' (1965) told the story of a governess, a Navy captain and his seven mischievous children. From the turbulent moments of when they first met to their escape across the mountains at the end of the film, the story tenderly grips those who watch it with heart warming songs such as 'Edelweiss', 'My Favourite Things' and 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain'.

The film became an international success with translations made into different languages including French, German, Spanish and Japanese (Question and additional information submitted by Plodd)
5. 'The Apartment' with Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine is one of my favourite movies. Which actress wanted to play the role of Fran in place of Shirley MacLaine?

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

Billy Wilder was inspired by David Lean's 'Brief Encounter' (1945) in which a doctor and housewife met at a friend's home to conduct their affair. Wilder wondered about the type of person who would loan his home for a sexual rendezvous and thus produced and directed 'The Apartment'. Marilyn Monroe had just finished working on 'Some Like it Hot', also directed by Billy Wilder, but was not cast in the role of Fran in 'The Apartment' due to her diva like attitude and poor work ethic. 6. A tennis star wanted to divorce his wife in order to re-marry, and a psychotic socialite wanted to dispose of his father. They met and the latter suggested that they swap murders. The tennis player went along with this as a joke, but then his wife was found murdered. This movie was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. What was this movie's name?

Answer: Strangers on a Train

All of these options were directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the "master of suspense". 'Strangers on a Train' was made in 1951 and starred Farley Granger and Robert Walker. It also featured Hitchcock's daughter Patricia, in a supporting role. 'The Lady Vanishes' (1938), involved the disappearance on a trans-European train of Miss Froy, played by Dame May Witty.

It also starred Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave. 'Psycho' (1960), was the Hitchcock film with the famous 'shower scene' and starred Anthony Perkins. 'The Paradine Case' (1947) was about a wife accused of poisoning her older, blind husband.

It starred Ann Todd and Gregory Peck. Hitchcock was also successful with TV's thriller series 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' in which he would introduce each episode himself.

He died in 1980. (Question and additional information submitted by Jennings)
7. This 1992 Walt Disney film, starring Christian Bale, Bill Pullman and Robert Duvall, was based on the true story of the 1899 newsboys strike in New York City. What was the name of this musical?

Answer: Newsies

The film told of the struggle of newsboys delivering papers for low wages, and of one boy in particular, Jack 'Cowboy' Kelly, played by Christian Bale. The price to purchase newspapers increased and the boys, led by Jack, went on strike against the money grabbing newspaper owners. (Question and additional information submitted by gsmoke827)
8. Which Walt Disney film included the songs 'Brazzle Dazzle Day', 'Passamashloddy' and 'Candle on the Water'?

Answer: Pete's Dragon

'Pete's Dragon' was a 1977 movie with a mixture of live action and animated cartoon. Young orphan, Pete, moved to a fishing village in Maine to get away from his abusive adopted parents. He soon integrated himself into the fishing community, with comical results, due to his invisible friend, Elliot the dragon, getting up to mischief. 9. One of my favorite movies is a Sci-Fi movie based on a very popular television series that was cancelled after only one season. Both the series and the movie have developed quite a cult following. The title of the movie was named for the ship that the cast lived on in the series. Some of the starring cast members were Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, and Adam Baldwin. Can you name this awesome Sci-Fi flick?

Answer: Serenity

The movie 'Serenity' filled in some of the blanks that were left behind when the television series 'Firefly' was cancelled. An assassin had been sent in to deal with with one of the members aboard the ship Serenity, whose brain held a deep, dark secret that the "Alliance", who were the the rulers of this future universe, did not want being made public. For fans of the show, the movie provided some answers to questions that were left unanswered due to the show being cancelled in its first season. 10. In this 'James Bond' film, a SPECTRE agent held the world at ransom, after hijacking two atomic bombs. 007 travelled to the Bahamas, where he met the beautiful Domino Vitali, encountered deadly sharks and fought in a climactic underwater battle. What was the name of this film?

Answer: Thunderball

Released in 1965, it starred Sean Connery as 007, and was based on Ian Fleming's 1961 novel of the same name. 'Thunderball' was intended to be the first film in the franchise, but after a plagiarism lawsuit where Fleming lost the rights to the story and characters, 'Dr. No' was made instead.

The movie was remade in 1983 as 'Never Say Never Again', which was the last film to star Connery as Bond. (Question and additional information submitted by MisterGumby)
