Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1985, Nick Park was making a graduation piece at the National Film and Television School. It wasn't complete, but he impressed Aardman enough to take him on. He continued working on the film part-time. It was finally finished in 1989 and released that year. The film, which starred the characters Wallace & Gromit, was called "A _____ Day Out" and concerned the pair going to the moon to replenish their cheese supplies as everybody knows that's what the moon is made of. Complete the film title.

Answer: Grand

The character of Wallace in "A Grand Day Out" was voiced by the veteran English actor Peter Sallis. Nick had asked him to do it and was amazed to get a positive response. Peter Sallis was himself amazed when the film was actually released some six years later.

He starred in the UK comedy series "Last of the Summer Wine" which ran for an incredible 31 seasons between the years of 1973 and 2010 on BBC TV in the UK.
2. In 1991, Nick Park actually had two films nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film. The one that won an Oscar was a series of interviews with the animal residents of a zoo about their likes and dislikes of zoo life and what they missed from their days in the wild. What was it called?

Answer: Creature Comforts

"Creature Comforts" was conducted like a TV documentary about conditions in a zoo from the perspective of the animals living there. The off-screen interviewer asked the various animals, such as polar bears, lemurs, apes and turtles about their accommodation, etc.

The responses were sometimes amusing and sometimes though provoking. A UK TV series was created in 2003 and a U.S. version produced in 2007.
3. Nick Park's "The Wrong Trousers" starred the characters Wallace & Gromit once again. Gromit found himself pushed out of his room by a new black and white lodger that Wallace had taken in. Gromit soon realised this lodger was a criminal mastermind and not at all what he seemed to be but Wallace remained oblivious. What sort of creature was the lodger?

Answer: A penguin

Wallace is an inventor of some very odd devices. Gromit, a dog, is probably the more intelligent of the two and found a 'Wanted' poster for "Feathers McGraw" who bore a striking resemblance to the penguin and realised that he was going to make Wallace commit a robbery while wearing his latest invention, a pair of remote controlled trousers. Gromit, of course, had to save the day.
The film won the 1994 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
4. In 1996, Aardman won their third Academy Award in the Animated Short Film category and also the BAFTA Best Animation Award for "A Close Shave". Gromit was accused of sheep rustling and Wallace fell for a local wool shop owner that Wallace met when he came to wash the shop windows. What was the name of Wallace's girlfriend?

Answer: Wendolene

When Wallace's dog Gromit was framed for sheep rustling and jailed, Wallace and Wendolene had to spring him from his cell and prove his innocence. Preston, the villainous dog actually behind the sheep rustling, was named after the town where Nick Park was born.
5. Aardman's first full length feature film, "Chicken Run", was released in June 2000, having been funded by Dreamworks. The main character, Rocky, was voiced by which Oscar winning director who is perhaps better known as an actor in a series of well-known Hollywood cop films?

Answer: Mel Gibson

"Chicken Run" was based on a chicken farm and told the story of how the 'inmates' tried to escape, rather like an old WW2 prison camp movie. The farmer had decided to move from selling eggs to selling chicken pies (gulp!).

6. In the autumn of 2005, Dreamworks released Aardman's second feature film which was the first full length Wallace & Gromit film. "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" concerned sabotage which threatened what village event?

In "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit", Wallace and Gromit ran a pest control company who were called in when a beast started attacking the local vegetable patches at night. The film earned Aardman another Academy Award in 2006 for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year and a 2006 BAFTA Award for Best British Film and the BAFTA Children's Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
7. In "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" Lady Campanula Tottington was voiced by an English actress whose films include "Alice in Wonderland", "The King's Speech" and four of the "Harry Potter" films. Who is she?

Answer: Helena Bonham Carter

There he meets Rita, who was voiced by an Oscar winning actress who achieved international recognition in a film about a rather large ship disaster. Who was the actress?

Answer: Kate Winslet

"Flushed Away" was the first computer generated film created by Aardman and followed a disastrous fire in their storage warehouse which destroyed many models and props used in previous Aardman films.
Kate Winslet won the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for "The Reader" in 2009 and has had many other Oscar nominations. She played Rose in the film "Titanic" opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
