Shortly after the death of the Peterson family's eldest son, Caleb, Laura Peterson receives a guest at the door. The man there is David, who served in the army with Caleb and claims to be his best friend. He says that he was there when Caleb died, and one of his last wishes was for David to check in on his family to make sure that they were alright. Laura breaks down when she hears this.

After spending a short amount of time with him, Laura insists that he stay with the family as long as he needs; he can take Caleb's room.

He says that he can take a motel room instead, but Laura won't hear of it.

Over the coming days, David ends up getting along well with the rest of the family despite some of their initial hesitance. Spencer, the father of the family, confides in David that he's got a number of job woes that make him worried about supporting his family.

He tells David to stay around a bit longer instead of continuing southward in hopes of finding work. David also helps Caleb's brother, Luke, with his homework and bully problem, picking him up from school and insisting that Luke point out who's hitting him. Luke points out Mike and Ian-- the worst of the bunch. That's when they follow them in their car.

Arriving at a bar that serves underage patrons if they're on the high school football team, David enters to provoke Luke's bullies. David initially goes in to stake the place out, but when Luke enters and takes a seat, David ends up provoking the bullies, ordering them girly drinks and buying their girlfriends better shots.

When the bullies step forward to start a fight, David uses precise and assured attacks to bring down the teenagers-- all four of them-- without taking a hit. There's nothing the barkeeper can do; the teenagers were underage, so he can't call the police. Getting home, Luke and David lie to the rest of the family, claiming it was just some high school fight.

Laura forces her daughter, Anna, to take David with her to a party shortly after his arrival, and it doesn't take long for Anna to realize that he's not all too bad. Anna spends a good chunk of the night with her boyfriend, but David mingles after bringing in a couple of kegs. During the party, the host of the get-together comes in looking for an argument and David ends up beating him up, smashing his head into the wall. Towards the end of the party, one of Anna's friends, Craig, says that they would support troops like David in any way, and David takes the opportunity to ask for a gun.

Answer: Butterfly knife

The bully problem persists at Luke's high school, and in addition to telling Luke he'll give him some self-defence training, he also gives Luke a butterfly knife while they're making jack-o-lanterns-- one he used while in active duty.

Anna, meanwhile, overhears David talking to someone on the phone the next morning and the discussion she has seems mysterious and concerning. She calls the army about David and, while she isn't told, it's apparent that David is not who he says he is, and the information about him is classified to a high degree. This escalates to a special forces team that puts their other work aside to fly south to meet with the Petersons. Their subject is still active, and that's a big issue.

Answer: Anna's boyfriend

David meets with Craig and an associate to purchase a gun and they head out to an abandoned quarry to do the deal. The man with the goods has a ton of stock in his trunk, and when David starts fiddling with the merchandise, it appears he likes what he sees. David says he'll take all the guns, and when he says that, he means he plans to kill them and simply take the guns. It takes one shot for each of the men in the quarry.

Anna gets a call back from the military and is told something concerning. Before she can tell her mother, Spencer comes home and tells the family that his boss committed suicide, taking too many pills (along with his girlfriend). His boss gives Spencer the job he wanted. Shortly after this, Anna is called by her boyfriend; Craig is dead and he's a suspect in the murder; they found planted evidence in his truck and home. Anna later confides in her friend, Kristen, that David was said to be declared dead in Arizona.

Anna tells the family that Craig is dead and Zeke, her boyfriend, is in jail before telling everyone in the house that David may not be who he says he is. David counters her, stating that he was part of a special forces group in the army and that they need to provide a cover story when asked about him to protect his identity. The family believes this. David tells them all that he'll be moving on in a couple of days regardless and apologizes for the disappointing turn of events in their lives.

The leader of the special task force, Major Carver, makes his way out to the country and insists on dealing with the issue personally. At the same time, Anna traces back the numbers in David's burner phone, finding at least one linking back to an unlicensed plastic surgeon.

Answer: After-school detention

During another fight with a bully at school, Luke retaliates and Laura and David end up at the school to talk with the principal. While David approves of the counter-attack (breaking a yardstick on the kid's face), the school states that as per their no tolerance policy, Luke will likely be expelled. David argues that the fight was a hate crime and threatens the principal with an impending lawsuit, inevitably shrinking Luke's expulsion to a month-long after-school detention. For this, Luke confides in David that Anna is looking into his past.

He also knows that David isn't who he says he is-- the real David Carver has photos of himself online. Luke doesn't care though; he believes that they're friends, and because David helped him, he's happy to help in return.

After David helps Luke with his issues at school, he and Laura end up back at home just in time for the special task force team to arrive and look for their target. They confirm that David is the man they're looking for, but before they can stop him, he manages to take out several of their men and, on the way out of the house, he stabs Laura in the chest because she can confirm his identity. David escapes in the family car, shooting out Major Carver's tires on the way out.

Driving down the lane, David ends up driving head-on into Spencer, who's coming home from work, tying up another loose end when he shoots him in the heart. He proceeds on foot next, crossing through the nearby fields on the way to town.

The truth is, David is part of a special military experiment and, as Major Carver tells Anna when he finds her in town, David is just trying to ensure that his cover as a supersoldier is not blown.

Answer: Firefighter

Major Carver takes Anna away from work to protect her from David, who's still heading to town on foot, and she narrowly avoids being killed there. David ends up making it to the restaurant anyways no more than a few minutes later, killing Kristen with a shot to the chest before blowing up the restaurant with a couple of grenades.

Anna and Carver head to the recreation centre to retrieve Luke, arriving just before David, but when he arrives he manages to kill Carver and trap the Petersons in a Halloween maze. Luke hides while Anna goes to confront David but, as would be expected, he gets the upper hand. She's able to get a shot off at David, but he hides in the fog in the rec centre and stabs her in the leg, pinning her to the ground. She tries to take another shot, but it strikes a light bulb nearby, setting fire to some of the hay on the dance floor. She's only saved when Luke stabs David in the back...and then again in the chest with the butterfly knife. David tells Luke that he did the right thing and that he doesn't blame him as the two siblings leave the burning building.

As Anna and Luke escape, the sirens approach. The two of them wait in an ambulance as the authorities deal with the burning building and Anna spots David, now dressed as a firefighter, hobbling away from the scene of the accident.
