Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the character played by Robert De Niro?

Answer: Rupert Pupkin

Rupert is a highly ambitious stand-up comedian whose main desire is to land a spot on a late-night talk show. Admittedly, this is not one of the more popular Scorsese-De Niro pairings, but it did garner high spots on several critics' lists.
2. Rupert wants to get his big break as a stand-up comedian by appearing in which late-night show?

Answer: Jerry Langford Show

"The Jerry Langford Show" is hosted, of course, by Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis) and is the top-rated show of its kind. It's unmistakably modeled after "The Tonight Show," hosted by Johnny Carson at that time.
3. Where has Rupert gained experience for his stand-up routine?

Answer: his mother's basement

Rupert lives at home with his mother. He has replicated Jerry Langford's studio in his mother's basement and hones his somewhat mediocre routine there.
4. After the end of one of Jerry's shows, he emerges from the rear studio entrance into a throng of clamoring autograph hounds. Who is waiting in Jerry's limousine?

Answer: a crazed fan

As Jerry makes his way through the throng into his limousine, he is startled by the appearance of a crazed fan waiting inside. After the fan is ejected, Rupert helps hold the frenzied crowd at bay while Jerry gets in the limo.
5. Who invades Jerry Langford's privacy by calling him at home?

Answer: Masha

Jerry is in the sterile comfort of his high-rise, seemingly not really enjoying a dinner in solitude when the phone rings. It's Masha (Sandra Bernhard) and she has managed to get his home phone number. It's Masha's dream to have a date with Jerry and she pursues him relentlessly.
6. In consideration of Rupert's efforts to help Jerry get to his limo previously, Jerry reluctantly suggests that Rupert stop by his office for an interview. What happens?

Answer: He is asked to submit a tape demo of his routine.

Rupert does in fact go to Jerry's office building but is rebuffed by the staff. Cathy Long (Shelley Hack) is Jerry's production executive and after determining that Rupert isn't working anywhere, asks him for a tape.
7. Rupert goes home and makes a tape in his mother's basement. What happens when he gives his tape to Jerry's staff?

Answer: The staff listens to the tape but reject it.

Cathy Long accepts Rupert's tape and summarily rejects it the next day. She tells Rupert that he needs to start working somewhere and one of the staff will drop by to see his act. Rupert is insistent but only manages to get himself thrown out of the building by security. Next, Rupert takes his girlfriend to Jerry's country home and is finally dismissed, in no uncertain terms, by Jerry.
8. Rupert has concocted a plan that may get him a spot on the Jerry Langford show. What is his plan?

Answer: Rupert and Masha kidnap Jerry.

Rupert and Masha wait outside Jerry's building and kidnap him. They take him to Masha's parents' townhouse in Manhattan. There, at gunpoint, Jerry must phone his producer and read cue cards held by Rupert. Rupert demands that he be the first guest on the show.
9. When Rupert makes his debut on "The Jerry Langford Show", who is the emergency guest host?

Answer: Tony Randall

The producers, staff and FBI have agreed to Rupert's terms, allowing him to appear on "The Jerry Langford Show". He is the first guest to appear. Tony Randall is the guest host for this show. In Tony's opening monologue, he says that his first guest is destined for greatness ... in one way or another.
10. Rupert delivers his routine on "The Jerry Langford Show" with what appears to be moderate success. The FBI is waiting for him after the show, of course, and Rupert is arrested. How does the film end?

Answer: Rupert has been released from prison and is a huge success.

Rupert Pupkin has become his mentor, Jerry Langford. Having served two years and nine months of a six year sentence, Rupert has sold his memoirs, "King for a Night," for over a million dollars and it is expected to appear as a major motion picture. Finally, Rupert appears to be the host of his own show. Rupert realizes his dreams and has become the "King of Comedy."
