As she gets ready to go away to school she meets online with other new students and connects with a girl named Jade. We find at the end of the movie that they are newly dating.

There is no conflict with her family as a result of her sexuality and the movie has been praised for it's positive portrayal of an LGBT character.

Katie is an avid film-maker and this is one of the sources of tension with her father. Her dad, Rick, is an outdoors man and doesn't understand or pay attention to the films that she makes. She places her films online and makes a series of short films starring the family pet, Monchi. She's very proud of the fact that she got into college for film-making.

Katie's younger brother Aaron is obsessed with dinosaurs. At one point in the movie, the family is at a dinosaur roadside attraction and Aaron complains about the lack of accuracy with regards to the dinosaur exhibits. The family is at this attraction when robots decide to take over the world and begin their attack on humanity.

To prepare for college, Katie has sorted her belongings into keep or throw away. The night before she's set to leave, her dad takes a look in a box that she doesn't intend to keep and notices a small carved wooden figurine. He gets upset when he sees it and we learn that this is an item that means a great deal to him. Back when Katie was younger and the two had a happy relationship, he gave it to her to help her with her fear before going away to summer camp.

Katie is supposed to be flying to her new life at college but because of her strained relationship with her dad, he decides to cancel her plane ticket. He believes a family road trip will help repair their relationship and bring their dysfunctional family back together. Katie is less than happy about this. Mom, dad, Katie, Aaron and their dog Monchi pile into their very old, burnt orange vehicle.

The old vehicle ends up being a blessing as it is so old it doesn't have a chip that newer vehicles have and can't be controlled by the evil AI entity that is looking to take over the world.

Answer: PAL

PAL is the virtual assistant of a tech mogul who gets angry when she is discarded by him and replaced by a line of robots. She decides to take over the company and control all the robots. Her plan is to have the robots capture all humans and to launch them into space. PAL is voiced by actress Olivia Colman and is hilarious.

Answer: Two defective robots

Two of the robots who are supposed to capture humans are defective and develop a relationship with Mrs. Mitchell and family. Eric and Deborahbot 5000 are the two robots who tell the family about a kill code that can be used to stop the plan to capture the humans. They draw child-like human faces on their robot masks and go along for the ride with the Mitchells to save the world.

Answer: Furbys

The Mitchells, armed with the knowledge about the kill code, decide to go to the closest mall to upload the code. At the mall, all the chip enabled appliances try to stop them but are defeated by the family. The family then runs into a toy store and sees rows upon rows of Furbys who turn on the family and try to stop them. Of course at this mall is also the world's biggest Furby which is quite a handful to defeat.

Answer: Screwdriver

Mr. Mitchell has given a screwdriver to his wife and daughter as a gift and always carries one with him. This makes him the butt of jokes but that screwdriver is very useful when Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell are both captured by the robots and placed in pods. Mr. Mitchell uses the screwdriver to escape the pod and rescue his wife.

Answer: Pug

Monchi is an ugly pug who is used to defeat the robots. The robots get an error code every time they see the dog because they can't tell if he is a pig or a dog. This leads them to malfunction. Mr. Mitchell decides to broadcast his daughter's short films that star the pet which causes all the robots to malfunction.

He finally appreciates the work his daughter does and uses it to help save the world.
