Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Paleface" was another successful writing and directing collaboration between Buster Keaton and Eddie Cline. It starts with a title telling us, "In the heart of the West, the Indian of today dwells in simple peace." We see a busy camp of teepees by a river, with Big Joe as the chief, smoking a peace pipe. But trouble comes to this placid, happy tribe. What happens?
2. Chief Big Joe is given notice for the tribe to vacate their land. He's not pleased. The white men killed his messenger, so his men will kill the first white man who enters their territory. Of course, the first white man to come along is none other than Buster. He's polite enough, closing and latching the gate behind him. Why is he there?
3. As Buster starts to wander away, the natives go into what must be a war dance. Buster, sociable and musically inclined, joins them. But they grab him, tie him to a stake, and start gathering firewood. After some maneuvering, Buster manages to cold-cock the one native nearby and drag him into the bushes. Buster disguises himself with the man's braids, a blanket, and what else?
4. A canny native man sees through Buster's lame disguise. He chases Buster to a the edge of a cliff, then tosses him off. Buster uses the blanket for a parachute, and he lands, relatively unscathed, atop another native man at the foot of the cliff, knocking the man out. Buster covers the man in his blanket and runs to hide in a cabin. As the man stands up, wrapped in Buster's blanket, the other natives mistake him for Buster and tackle him. What does Buster busy himself with in the cabin while all this is going on?
5. The native men finally break into the cabin where Buster has taken refuge. Why can't they find him?
6. In spite of his efforts to escape, Buster is captured. But through his wits, he manages to survive the attempt to kill him. The men of the village, awed, make Buster a chief: Little Chief Paleface. And when Big Chief Joe reveals to his second-in-command that the white men are insisting that they must leave their land, Buster insists, "Us Indians must stick together." Buster leads the men to town, where they confront the people who are causing them trouble. What do they do there?
7. Buster follows the head of the trouble-making white men as the man sneaks outside. Buster threatens him with a tomahawk, and the man, to avoid being scalped, gives Buster his toupee. Buster gives his trophy to Chief Big Joe, then takes off after the troublesome white man, who has fled on horseback. The white man forces Buster, at gunpoint, to switch clothes with him. When his friends, mistaking him for the troublesome white man, shoot at him with their bows, what does Buster do?
8. Buster is forced to flee from his friends, who think he's their foe. But he's spotted by "A rival tribe of savages who went broke playing strip poker." (The intertitle seems to exist to explain why these guys are wearing just loincloths, though clearly it's just so the audience can easily identify which group a particular guy belongs with.) When Buster encounters them, he identifies himself: "It's me -- little Chief!" How do they respond?
9. Chased by the Loincloth Tribe, Buster comes to a steep, high gorge. Now what?
10. When Buster is rejoined by his friends at the village, he's relieved to realize they recognize him. He puts a hand to his heart -- and realizes that the troublesome white man had left something crucial in the pocket of the jacket he'd forced Buster to put on. Buster and his friends are saved!
Having resolved the immediate crisis, Buster turns his attention to the beautiful maiden. He sweeps her into a kiss. "Two years later" the intertitle tells us. What do we see next?
