"The Sandlot" II Trivia Quiz

Answer: Werewolf

This occurs during the scene where Benny is being chased by the Beast through the town. One of the places Benny runs to try and escape the Beast is a movie theater. It shows the audience in the theater sitting and watching the movie. Suddenly, Benny slides under the screen and runs up the aisle. The Beast then tears through the screen and chases Benny through the theater.

The movie that is playing in the theater is an old black and white movie and the two characters in the movie are discussing a werewolf and how to kill it. When the Beast tears through the screen, the actor in the movie is transforming into a werewolf.

Answer: "You play ball like a girl!"

One day, when the sandlot boys are paying, a bunch of other boys show up on their bicycles in official-looking baseball uniforms. It is clear the two groups do not like each other. The leader of the other team gets into a verbal fight with Ham, one of the sandlot boys. They exchange insults back and forth while they are cheered on by their friends. Finally, Ham makes that final comment and both groups go silent. The insult fight leads to the other team challenging the sandlot boys to a game on their nice field which the sandlot boys accept.

The three incorrect choices are references to other lines in the movie. "You throw like my sister" is a loose reference to a line spoken earlier by Yeah-Yeah, one of the other sandlot boys, when he is trying to convince Benny to not let Smalls play with them. "Bobbing for apples in the toilet" is another insult used in the same argument between Ham and the other kid; the other kid uses it against Ham. "You don't even know who the Great Bambino is!" is a reference to one discussion at the beginning and another towards the end of the movie about how Smalls does not know who the Great Bambino is. The Great Bambino is, of course, Babe Ruth.

Answer: legends never die

This line is spoken by Babe Ruth when he appears to Benny in a dream. He convinces Benny to go get the ball and try to outrun the Beast. On his way out through the closet he came from in the dream, he says this to Benny to motivate him and give him courage.

Answer: PF Flyers

PF Flyers are an actual shoe brand that was popular in the 1960s, when the movie takes place. The marketing ad for these shoes when they originally came out was that any kid who wore these shoes would be able to run faster and jump higher. This slogan is referenced in the movie by Smalls' narration.

When Benny arrives at the sandlot and gets ready to jump over the fence, he takes off his old Converse shoes and puts on the PF Flyers right out of the box.

Answer: He was hit in the head with a pitch

Once Smalls and Benny save the Beast from under the fence that fell on him and return him to his owner, they are invited inside. They talk with the Beast's owner for a while and they learn that he used to play baseball as well and therefore, knew Babe Ruth when he was alive. We learn that during a game, he was hit in the head with a pitch, went blind, and was no longer able to play.

He says that he would have been really good if he had gotten to play longer.

Answer: Going to the pool

One day, the temperature is unusually hot and none of the boys, except for Benny, want to play. They decide, instead, to go to the pool and the narration says that "...going to the pool was what Benny tolerated best."

Answer: fireworks

On the 4th of July, the sky is lit up with fireworks and it gives the boys just enough light to play. However, most of the boys are distracted by the fireworks too much to play well anyway. During this scene, we see Benny hit the ball and start to run but none of the fielders chase after it because they are too hypnotized by the fireworks.

Answer: Cubs

Benny is trying to help Smalls fit in, so after Smalls' first attempt at baseball, Benny walks home with him and before he leaves, Benny gives Smalls a glove to replace what Smalls calls "the plastic mitt his grandmother gave him" and a better hat. This new hat Benny gives to Smalls is a Chicago Cubs hat and Benny tells Smalls to throw his old hat in the fireplace.

Answer: Tommy and Timmy

Their names are Tommy and Timmy Timmons. You first learn this while Benny is introducing all of the boys to Smalls. As it turns out, Timmy, the younger of the two, has a strange habit of repeating a lot of what his brother, Tommy, says.

Answer: A steak

Smalls' step-dad is trying to teach Smalls how to play catch, when Smalls accidentally gets hit in the eye with the ball. He stumbles into the house and his step dad slaps a steak he got out of the freezer onto Smalls' eye. He says that the steak will keep the swelling down but he will still probably get a black eye, which he does.
