Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Near the beginning of the movie, Benny helped me catch a baseball. Who played me?

Answer: Tom Guiry

Guiry, born on October 12th, 1981 in Trenton, New Jersey, was cast as Scotty Smalls. Scotty, who was known by his baseball teammates as "Smalls", moved to the neighborhood and was encouraged to make friends that summer. Smalls went to the sandlot one day to play baseball with a bunch of neighborhood kids.

In his first scene at the sandlot, a ball was hit towards him and Smalls fell down when he attempted to catch it and this caused many of the kids to laugh at him. The following day, Benny helped Smalls out and Smalls was able to catch the baseball. From that point onward, Smalls' baseball playing improved and he and Benny became closer in the process.

At the end of the movie, Smalls asked Benny to help him with Hercules, a dog who was injured by a falling fence. Guiry starred in the films "Mystic River", "Black Hawk Down" and "Tigerland".
2. I encouraged my son to make friends that summer. Who played me?

Answer: Karen Allen

Allen, a native of Carrollton, Illinois, had the small role of Mrs. Smalls. Mrs. Smalls was Scotty's mom and asked him in one scene if he made any friends that summer. Scotty said he had not so she told him she wanted him to go out and make friends since she would rather he do that than stay inside and play with his toys.

She advised him to run around, climb trees and even get into trouble. Scotty promised her he would try to make friends, which pleased his mom. Allen was in the movies "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "Scrooged".
3. I played catch with my stepson and accidentally injured his eye. Who played me?

Answer: Denis Leary

Leary, born in 1957 in Worcester, Massachusetts, landed the minor part of Bill Smalls. Bill was Scotty's stepfather and Scotty asked him one day if he could teach him how to play catch. Bill said he would eventually play catch with him but that he had some work to complete. Mrs. Smalls told Bill to put the work aside and play catch with their son. Bill listened to her and got two gloves and a baseball to go outside to play catch. Bill instructed Scotty to keep his eye on the ball and it was on his first pitch that Scotty missed the ball. Bill reminded Scotty to keep his eye on the ball and to also move his glove if the ball moved. On the second attempt, Scotty still was unsuccessful but it was on the third attempt he caught the ball his dad threw.

However, this resulted in a black eye as the ball went towards Scotty's eye so his dad told him he had to watch out for the curve ball. Leary portrayed characters in the films "Two If by Sea", "Company Man" and "True Crime".
4. Michael "Squints" Palledorous had a crush on me. Who played me?

Answer: Marley Shelton

Shelton played Wendy Peppercorn, who was first seen walking down the street. Squints eyed her since he had a crush on her and she smiled at him while she continued to walk. Midway through the movie, the sandlot kids went to a local pool and Squints went into the deep end and appeared to be unconscious. Wendy was the lifeguard on duty that day and dove in to get Squints.

When she performed CPR on Squints, he smiled at his friends as she listened for a heartbeat, showing that he faked being in trouble just so Wendy could help him. Squints then kissed Wendy and she scolded him for what he did.

At the end of the movie, it was revealed that Squints married Wendy. Shelton guest starred on the TV series "American Dad!", "Karen Sisco" and "Cybill".
5. I instructed Smalls on how to make a smore. Who played me?

Answer: Patrick Renna

Renna, born on March 3rd, 1979 in Boston, Massachusetts, was cast as Hamilton "Ham" Porter. Ham was seen in one scene hitting a home run while playing on the sandlot and this led to his friends hitting him with their gloves. When Smalls went to retrieve the ball in the backyard of the home behind the sandlot, the sandlot kids, including Ham, ran after him.

They explained to Smalls that there was a vicious dog in the back yard owned by a mean man and therefore they could not retrieve the ball. At a party the kids threw, Ham was shocked to learn that Smalls did not know what a smore was so he told him how to make it.

He said you use chocolate, a roasted marshmallow and two graham crackers to make a smore. When the kids went swimming at a community pool, Ham did a cannonball which caused a lot of water to splash on some women lying down at the poolside.

The women yelled at Ham for what he had done. Renna guest starred on the TV shows "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", "The Closer" and "Judging Amy".
6. I owned a dog named Hercules. Who played me?

Answer: James Earl Jones

Jones, a native of Arkabutla, Mississippi, played Mr. Mertle. Mr. Mertle owned Hercules, who the boys believed to be vicious, and was believed to have been told years ago by the police to keep the dog chained up forever. At the end of the movie, Mr. Mertle spoke to the boys and informed them they should have simply knocked on his door and asked him to get their baseballs.

This showed them that Mr. Mertle was not a mean man, which they thought he was. In one scene, Mr. Mertle showed Benny and Smalls his baseball memorabilia, which included autographs of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. Jones guest starred on the TV series "Frasier", "Stargate SG-1" and "Touched by an Angel".
7. I successfully managed to snatch a baseball out of Mr. Mertle's backyard. Who played me?

Answer: Mike Vitar

Vitar, born in 1978 in Los Angeles, California, played Benny Rodriguez. Benny played baseball on the sandlot with a bunch of friends and was considered to be the best player out of all of them. One day, Benny gave Smalls a proper baseball cap to wear and allowed him to keep the glove he gave to Smalls when he showed him how to properly catch a baseball. Midway through the film, the sandlot kids played a game with rival kids and Benny managed to hit a home run in that game.

At the end of the movie, Benny planned to leap into Mr. Mertle's backyard to snatch a baseball since that particular baseball belonged to Smalls and had Babe Ruth's autograph on it. Benny climbed over the fence and got the ball and climbed back over but the dog, Hercules, leaped over to chase Benny.

Hercules chased Benny throughout the city but Benny managed to keep away from him. Vitar had roles in the movies "D2: The Mighty Ducks", "D:3 The Mighty Ducks" and "Sunset Grill".
8. I often said the same thing my older brother had just said. Who played me?

Answer: Shane Obedzinski

Obedzinski landed the role of Tommy "Repeat" Timmons. Tommy and his older brother, Timmy, played on the sandlot with the kids and Tommy had a knack for repeating what his older brother said, thus earning him the nickname "Repeat". When Smalls asked who The Great Bambino was, all the kids, including Tommy, were shocked he had not heard of Babe Ruth since that was his nickname. Timmy also said his nickname was The Colossus of Clout and Tommy repeated that nickname.

When Timmy informed Smalls in one scene that all balls which went into Mr Mertle's backyard stayed there, Tommy repeated this information and then Timmy told him to shut up. Obedzinski starred in the films "Matinee", "My Girl" and "Cop and a Half".
9. Smalls once ran to me to give me the baseball after Benny told him to throw it to the second baseman. Who played me?

Answer: Brandon Quintin Adams

Adams, born on August 22nd, 1979 in Topeka, Kansas, was cast as Kenny DeNunez. Kenny pitched for the sandlot kids and did not like Smalls at first since he did not think he could play baseball well. On Smalls' second day of playing baseball at the sandlot, Benny hit a baseball out to him and told him to throw it to the second baseman. Benny hit the ball fairly far since it got very close to the fence and this upset Kenny since he knew Hercules the dog on the other side of the fence would scare Smalls. Since Smalls did not know how to throw the baseball, he ran up to Kenny and gave him the baseball. Kenny was the one who pitched the "heater" ball which Ham hit over the fence and into Mr. Mertle's yard. Adams guest starred on the TV series "Moesha", "Boy Meets World" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air".
10. After Smalls shocked me by catching a baseball, I said he was "alright". Who played me?

Answer: Chauncey Leopardi

Leopardi, born on June 14th, 1981, played Michael "Squints" Palledorous in "The Sandlot". Squints played third base and got his nickname due to the way he squinted his eyes all the time. Squints was surprised when he saw the amateur player in Smalls make a great catch in the outfield.

This caused him to take off his glasses to make sure he was seeing things right and he said that Smalls was "alright". At a party, Squints told his sandlot friends a story about Mr. Mertle's past which was revealed later on in the movie to be inaccurate.

After the pool incident (see Interesting Info section for question four), Squints worried that Wendy disliked him but she did not since she smiled and waved at him as he left. Leopardi starred in the movies "Houseguest", "The Opposite of Sex" and "Sticks and Stones".
