Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Made in 1949, this movie starred Harpo, Groucho, and Chico, as well as Raymond Burr as a meanie and Marilyn Monroe as a sweetie.

Answer: Love Happy

Most Marxists don't consider "Love Happy" to be a true Marx Brothers movie. Originally developed as a solo vehicle for Harpo, the producers felt it would make more money if the other brothers were added. Also, Chico, due to his gambling addiction, needed the money.

As a result, the three are together only briefly, and that near the end. Today, the greatest claim to fame for "Love Happy" is as the debut film for Marilyn Monroe, even though she had appeared in a few movies before this clunker. "Casablanca" was the last movie designed specifically for Minnie's Boys.

The three also appeared in Irwin Shaw's "The Story of Mankind", but never appeared in the same scene. Harpo was featured as Sir Isaac Newton, Groucho as Peter Minuit, and Chico as a monk. "World" featured a brief appearance of another classic movie trio, The Three Stooges.
2. Released in 1959, this Billy Wilder story features Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Joe E. Brown and George Raft in classic gangster mode.

Answer: Some Like It Hot

As witnesses to the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, Curtis and Lemmon don dresses and wigs to hide out in an all-girl band, featuring Monroe, in 1920's America. Heading to Florida before Raft and his gang can snuff 'em out, Curtis falls for Monroe, while Joe E. falls for Jack. "Bosom Buddies' is the 1970's T.V. sitcom, starring Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari, that borrowed from "Hot's" men-in-women's-clothing. "Fireman" is an early Joe E. Brown comedy, in which he stars as "Smokey" Joe Grant, a local baseball player and fireman who can't decide which he wants to be. "Sleep" is based on Raymond Chandler's book of the same name, starring Humphrey Bogart as private eye Philip Marlowe.
3. Jack Lemmon had a small part in this story of conspiracy and murder of the President of the United States, which also featured Kevin Costner, Kevin Bacon, Ed Asner and Joe Pesci.

Answer: JFK

Oliver Stone directed this huge conspiracy theory on who REALLY killed John Kennedy. It was based, in part, on the book by former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison (played by Costner), who had a small part in the film as Chief Justice Earl Warren.

Others in the movie include Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Oldman as Oswald, Walter Matthau, Wayne Knight ("Newman" from "Seinfeld") and John Candy. "Men" is the story of the Watergate scandal, starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman. "Taxi Driver" starred Robert DeNiro as a cabbie obsessed with Jodie Foster, whom John Hinckley tried to impress by shooting President Ronald Reagan. "D.O.A." is a classic 1950 whodunit, starring Edmund O'Brien as a man who has been poisoned and spends the last remaining time he has to find out who did it and why.
4. Kevin Costner has spent a good portion of his career making sports-related films. In this movie, he plays a man who hears a disembodied voice and sees dead ballplayers. Co-starring Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, and Ray Liotta, name this film in which Costner "is out standing in his field."

Answer: Field Of Dreams

Costner followed his huge success in 1988, "Bull Durham," with this 1989 hit, based on W.P. Kinsella's book, "Shoeless Joe." Costner plays Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer who carves a baseball diamond out of his cornfield so that "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and other members of the Chicago Black Sox, as well as other past baseball greats, may play ball once again. Madigan costarred as Ray's wife, with James Earl Jones as reclusive author Terence Mann and Liotta as the Shoeless One.

A young Gaby Hoffman played Costner's daughter, Karin.

In "Bull Durham" Costner played "Crash" Davis, a career minor league catcher who takes on the role of mentor for young phenom pitcher, "Nuke" LaLoosh, played by Tim Robbins. In 1999's "For Love of the Game," Costner plays Detroit Tiger pitcher Billy Chapel, on the mound for what may be the last time in his career. "Tin Cup" finds Costner in the role of golf pro Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, trying to score a spot in the U.S. Open, as well as a spot in the heart of former flame Molly Griswold, played by Rene Russo.
5. Ah, that voice. James Earl Jones has had a celebrated career, starring alongside many of the greats of Hollywood. In this picture, Jones costars alongside Robert Duvall as a Chicago cop whose half-brother (Duvall) seeks him out after learning the truth of his parentage.

Answer: A Family Thing

Most moviegoers missed this 1996 gem, which is a great shame. Co-written by Billy Bob Thornton, "Thing" features Jones as Ray Murdock and Duvall as Earl Pilcher, a man who discovers, after the death of his mother, that she wasn't his mother at all. This movie also features an excellent performance by Irma T. Hall as Aunt T, the sister of Jones' and Duvall's mother.
6. Robert Duvall, throughout his career, has played many a cowboy. In this 1960's classic, he plays Ned Pepper, alongside Dennis Hopper, Glen Campbell, and Kim Darby, and one of Hollywood's "royalty."

Answer: True Grit

1969's "True Grit" won "The Duke", John Wayne, his one and only Oscar. Duvall went on to perform in many box-office and critically-acclaimed hits, such as "The Godfather" trilogy, "M*A*S*H", and Apocalypse Now." "The Outfit" is a 1973 movie starring Duvall, Karen Black, and Joe Don Baker. "Shoot Low, Boys" is a book by the late, great Lewis Grizzard.
7. Dennis Hopper has made a career out of playing flawed good guys ("Hoosiers") and extremely bad guys ("Speed"). In this flick, he played somewhat of a wimp, domineered by his father, played by James Gregory. Oh, John Wayne is in it, too, along with George Kennedy.

Answer: The Sons of Katie Elder

Hopper played the role of Dave Hastings, a disappointment to his father, Morgan Hastings (Gregory), who had stolen the Elder's land. He was eventually shot and killed by his father, to prevent him from saying anything to Tom and John Elder, played respectively by Dean Martin and John Wayne.
8. Big men are meant for the big screen, and they don't come any bigger than John Wayne. Over the course of his career, he appeared in over 170 motion pictures, from an unaccredited role in 1926's "Brown of Harvard", to his final role as a dying gunfighter in 1976's "The Shootist." In this Western, he co-starred with Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson, playing a sheriff trying to prevent a jailbreak.

Answer: Rio Bravo

"Rio Bravo," shot in 1959 and directed by Howard Hawkes, one of Wayne's favorite directors, was the first of two films that Duke made with Dino, the other being "The Sons of Katie Elder." In 1966, it was remade as "El Dorado" with Robert Mitchum in Martin's role as the town sheriff turned town drunk, and James Caan, as "Mississippi," in Nelson's role ("Colorado Ryan").
9. Dean Martin costarred in many films with many people, most notably Jerry Lewis. In this film, Martin and Lewis played a singer and a busboy (what else?) trying to solve a 'Scooby Doo'-type mystery. Co-starring Carmen Miranda, name this remake of an earlier Bob Hope film.

Answer: Scared Stiff

This 1953 film was a remake of 1940's "The Ghost Breakers", starring Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard. Hope and buddy Bing Crosby even had a cameo at the end of the film as a couple of skeletons just "hangin' around." "Stiff" costarred Carmen Miranda as Carmelita Castinha, and George Dolenz, father of Mickey of "The Monkees", as Mr. Cortega.
10. Winding our way back to Groucho, we find Mr. Marx, sans greasepaint moustache and brothers, starring in this musical comedy alongside Carmen Miranda, as an agent trying to get his only client (Miranda) a job.

Answer: Copacabana

"Copacabana" was Groucho's first credited role in a movie without his brothers (he previously had an uncredited part as a sunbather in the 1936 film, "Yours For The Asking," starring George Raft and Dolores Costello). "Copacabana" also features Groucho's second wife, Kay, as a cigarette girl. Kay was the mother of his youngest daughter, Melinda, and was previously married to Bowery Boy Leo Gorcey.
