Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song is "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head", the year 1969, and the cast includes Robert Redford and Paul Newman as two bank robbers on the run. What is the movie?

Answer: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" revolves around the trials and tribulations of two bank robbers trying to escape the law.

Redford would have starred with Katherine Ross (who plays the character of Etta Place in the movie) two years earlier - but he lost out on the role of Benjamin Braddock in "The Graduate" (1967) to Dustin Hoffman because the director, Mike Nichols, thought Redford was too good looking - and no one would have believed that he would have any trouble in getting "the girl". And thus was Hoffman's career launched!

Paul Newman died in September 2008, at the age of 83. As well as being nominated for an Oscar on 10 occasions (winning just once, at the 8th nomination, for "Color of Money" in 1987), he was also a car racing enthusiast and established a very successful food brand. He famously said of this latter venture "Once you've seen your face on a bottle of salad dressing, it's hard to take yourself seriously".
2. "Layla" is the song, 1990 is the year of release (UK) and the film introduces Robert de Niro, Joe Pesci and Paul Sorvino as an interesting mob in which film?

Answer: Goodfellas

The film is based on the non fiction book " Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Director Martin Scorsese. It traces the story of three New York gangsters and their attempts to climb within the mob's pecking order in New York in the 1960s and '70s.

Derek and the Dominoes' hit is the accompaniment to a scene of mayhem in which Jimmy Conway (de Niro) manages to exterminate about half of the rest of the cast.

Ray Liotta's film debut was in the cult classic "The Lonely Lady".
3. Marti Pellow croons "Love is all Around" in a film released in 1994. In the film, we see Simon Callow, Kristin Scott Thomas and Rowan Atkinson - the latter in a frock! What is the name of this movie?

Answer: Four Weddings and a Funeral

This gentle British comedy traces the lives and loves of the ensemble based on the five ceremonial events mentioned in the title.

The original version of "Love is all Around" was performed by The Troggs and was first released in 1967. Marti Pellow's Wet Wet Wet recorded a cover of it as a soundtrack to "Four Weddings.." - and it spent 15 weeks at number one in the UK charts in 1994.

Rowan Atkinson has degrees in electrical engineering - according to his friend, and best man at his wedding, Stephen Fry he "doesn't have an ounce of showbiz in him".
4. "The Blower's Daughter" by Damien Rice features in this multiple award winning film by Mike Nichols from 2004. It stars Natalie Portman, Jude Law and Clive Owen. What is it?

Answer: Closer

This movie is a raw and often painful look at the lives of four people as they interrelate over the course of time.

Clive Owen and Natalie Portman were both nominated for Oscars. The fourth member of the "love quadrangle" was Julia Roberts. A bit of a "marmite" of a film this one - makes many "top film" lists - but it is also amongst many of the "most disliked" films of recent years. People seem to love it to bits - or absolutely loathe it. It really does evoke polarized opinions.

Natalie Portman has starred in three "Star Wars" movies since 1999. When at the royal premiere in London of "The Phantom Menace" in 1999 Prince Charles asked her if she'd been in the original Star Wars movie - this was released in 1977, 4 years prior to Natalie Portman's birth!
5. Jon Cryer, Molly Ringwald and James Spader star in this 1986 film - and it's Cryer who lip synchs to Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" when he's trying to woo Ringwald. Which film is it?

Answer: Pretty in Pink

"Pretty in Pink" is another twist on the classic "High School Romance" plot, with "bad girl" Molly Ringwald falling for the rich hunk (played by Andrew McCarthy) - but we all know how the course of true love runs..

As well as Otis' masterpiece, the soundtrack also features songs by John Lennon, Suzanne Vega, Morrissey, INXS and Barry Manilow, amongst others.

Jon Cryer was asked to audition for the role of Chandler Bing in "Friends". He was appearing in a stage play in London at the time of the auditions, so had a tape made of him reading the audition part. The tape got lost somewhere between London and the US - and the part got away from him.
6. Danny Boyle directs Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle and Jonny Lee Miller in this movie which introduces Lou Reed's "Perfect Day". What is its name?

Answer: Trainspotting

This is a dark look at the Edinburgh drug scene through the eyes of the main protagonist, Renton played by McGregor.

"Trainspotting" received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay.

Jonny Lee Miller is probably most famously known as being the first husband of Angelina Jolie.
7. Simon Pegg, comedian Dylan Moran and the (UK) "Office"'s Lucy Davis star in this 2004 horror spoof which features one hilarious, stomach churning scene playing out to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now". What is the name of the film?

Answer: Shaun of the Dead

Normal, suburban Britain, and the everyday travails of our hero, Simon Pegg, get thrown slightly awry when the neighbourhood gets taken over by Zombies. Zombies to tend to have that sort of effect on normal, suburban life, don't they?

Chris Martin of Coldplay appears as one of the zombies in the film. He and Simon Pegg are great friends- and Pegg is godfather to one of his children.

Lucy Davis is the daughter of British comedian Jasper Carrot.
8. Tom Wilkinson, Hugo Speer and Mark Addy star in this 1997 comedy which reaches a crescendo with the the sound of Tom Jones singing "You Can Leave Your Hat On". What is it?

Answer: The Full Monty

Although nominally a comedy film, there is a hard edge to this tale of six unemployed steelworkers who have nothing, seemingly, to lose from going "The Full Monty".

"The Full Monty" was the highest grossing film in British cinema history, taking in over £160m at the box office.

The title itself is a British slang expression for "The whole thing", and coupled with the north of England accents and its own peculiar slang, American audiences had a lot of difficulty in understanding much of the dialogue. Some American cinemas actually printed up "translation" seats which they left on cinema goers seats to help them understand some of the finer nuances of what was being said!
9. Faith Hill sings "There You'll Be" in this 2001 blockbuster featuring Josh Hartnett, Kate Beckinsale and Jon Voight as President Roosevelt. What is the name of the movie?

Answer: Pearl Harbor

This script features a complicated love story based mainly around the bombing of Pearl Harbor in the Second World War.

"There You'll Be" was nominated for the "Best Original Song" Oscar - the award going to Randy Newman's "If I Didn't Have You" from the film "Monsters Inc".

Ben Affleck also starred in "Pearl Harbor"; it was whilst making this movie he first met his future wife Jennifer Garner.
10. Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renée Zellweger all star in this 2003 film for which Sting gained an Oscar nomination for his song "You Will Be My Ain True Love". What is the film?

Answer: Cold Mountain

This is an American Civil War saga which traces the adventures of Inman (Jude Law) as he tries to make his way home from the war to his childhood sweetheart. Whilst much of the film (from the title onwards) is depressing, it nevertheless manages to leave the viewer with the notion that even under the most trying of circumstances there is always hope.

Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett, Leonardo di Caprio and Tom Cruise were all considered for the lead role eventually played by Jude Law.

Nicole Kidman really does play the piano in "Cold Mountain" - and Brendan Gleeson really does play the fiddle in the film as well!
