When the movie started, Mark Garrison and his wife Fran were frantically trying to get their dachshund to the vet before she had puppies. On the way, they were followed by a police officer. He nearly let them off for speeding because at first, he thought it was Fran who was having a baby. Sergeant Carmody followed them all the way to the animal hospital and wrote Mark up for speeding, driving in the center line, running a stop sign, speeding in a hospital zone, forgetting his driver's license, and parking in a "No Parking" zone!

When Mark went to pick up Donke and her three puppies, Heidi, Chloe, and Willimina, Dr. Pruit offered him a Great Dane puppy. The mother dog belonged to the doctor, and she had had more puppies than she could feed. Dr. Pruit asked Mark if he would mind taking one of the puppies home to let Donke feed it. Mark took the pup home with the dachshunds, and he tricked Fran into thinking it was another dachshund.

He named the Great Dane Brutus.

Fran noticed that Brutus was growing a lot faster than the dachshund puppies. He didn't even look like one of the them. When Fran saw Mark drawing a picture of the dachshunds standing in front of a Great Dane, she asked if that was what Brutus was. Then she was mad at him for trying to fool her. Mark told her about how Brutus was pushed away by his mother and how the doctor wanted Brutus to be fed by Donke. Fran said now that Brutus had been weaned, he had to go back to the vet.

When she realized how much Mark missed Brutus, she got him back and gave him to Mark for his birthday.

One day Fran was knitting a sweater for Donke when Mark asked her to pose with the dog for a drawing. When they left the room, Heidi, Chloe, and Willimina wound Fran's yard all over the living room. Brutus was there when it happened, but he didn't make the mess.

He only got his head stuck in Fran's yarn holder and started barking loudly. When Fran and Mark returned the dachshunds had climbed back in their basket, so it appeared Brutus had made the mess.

A few days after the yarn mess, the dogs got into Mark's art studio. He knocked over a stack of paintings, turned over Mark's drawing desk, and ran into the bookshelf. The puppies sprayed each other with paint, knocked over plaster statues, and dumped a huge bag of plaster.

The fan got turned on, and it appeared like smoke was coming from the studio. The dachshunds escaped out the window, and once again, Brutus took the blame.

Toyama and his nephew Kenji were setting up the party in the Garrisons's backyard when they encountered Brutus. Kenji shouted, "Lion! Lion!" When Mark and Fran came outside, they found Kenji in a tree, and Toyama was lying flat on the ground while Brutus towered over him. Toyama ordered, "Take away lion!" He was shocked when the Garrisons actually called Brutus a dog. Mark eventually tied Brutus up, but that did no good later that evening.

Toyama was serving the food at the party, and he was slightly offended that no one wanted to try kombu, stuffed seaweed. During the party, Mark took a bone to Brutus. Chloe got through the fence and started pestering Brutus, then she took the bone. Brutus jumped the fence chasing Chloe and destroyed the party as he went.

As soon as Brutus got loose in the party, chaos erupted everywhere. Kenji got knocked down while he was carrying a cake outside and shouted, "Lion! Lion!" Toyama fainted near the food table. While Mark and Fran tried to chase Brutus, Kenji jumped onto a cart.

The hook on Brutus's leash got caught on the cart, and the huge dog pulled him like a horse pulling a wagon. Kenji was throw off and slid all the way down the buffet table, knocking food onto his uncle down below. The puppies started eating cake off his face!

While Brutus was running around wrecking the party, a lot of the guests tried to climb into the small stand set up for the band. It was placed on supports right over the pond and not intended to hold a lot of weight. The party ended with the band stand breaking and most of the guests falling in the pond.

When Fran got out, she shoved Mark in. Brutus finally got the bone back. The next day, Toyama and Kenji refused to come back for their decorations.

With the help of Dr. Pruit, Mark decided to enter Brutus in a dog show. The doctor helped him train Brutus to overcome the way he liked to slouch when he walked. Fran also entered Chloe in the show and won second place. Brutus won two ribbons in the Great Dane category and third place in best of working-class winners. Brutus finally stopped slouching when he saw a female Great Dane. Dr. Pruit walked Brutus in the second round, and Mark gave him one of Brutus's blue ribbons for all his help.

The Garrisons finally saw Brutus did have some good in him after all.
