Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is Elizabeth living at the beginning of the film?

Answer: Hatfield

Elizabeth was living at her childhood home of Hatfield during the reign of her half-sister Mary. Mary summoned her to London on suspicion of Elizabeth plotting to overthrow her.
2. What colour dress was Elizabeth wearing when she was taken to the Tower of London?

Answer: White

This is an error. In real life, Elizabeth wore yellow when she was taken to the Tower of London. She was desperate not to wear white as it was the same colour her mother wore when she was sentenced to incarceration in the Tower.
3. When being crowned Queen, Elizabeth was crowned Queen of England, Ireland and what other country?

Answer: France

English monarchs still claimed France, which dated back to Henry V who was promised the French crown but died before he could claim it. Ironically, Salic law dictated that a female may rule France as Queen. Elizabeth did not have a claim to the crown of Scotland. That was worn by her cousin, Mary.
4. Where is Sir Francis Walsingham the Member of Paliament for?

Answer: Lyme Regis

Robert Cecil informs Elizabeth that he has appointed Sir Francis Walsingham to have a care for Elizabeth. In reality, Sir Francis heads up the English secret service. Officially, he is MP for Lyme Regis, nothing more.
5. By how many votes does the Act of Uniformity pass?

Answer: 5

In real life, the Act passed by three votes. Bishop Gardiner and other vocal opponents were lured into the cellars beneath Parliament and locked away until the vote was passed. This was done by Sir Francis Walsingham.
6. Sir John Gielgud played the Pope in "Elizabeth".

Answer: True

In a 'blink and you'll miss it' scene, the Pope asks John Ballard about the situation in England. John Ballard says that English Catholics are crying out for salvation.
7. Having been spurned by Elizabeth, who does Robert Dudley turn to for "solice"?

Answer: Lady Knolls

Lady Knolls borrows one of Elizabeth's dresses and she is next seen fornicating with Robert Dudley. In the middle of things, she begins screaming and tearing at the dress. It turns out that the dress has been laced with poison and Lady Knolls dies. Robert Dudley, already under suspicion of murdering his wife, was reported at the scene.
8. Letters from the Pope were NOT found addressed to whom?

Answer: Lord Burleigh

The letters from the Pope, issuing the excommunication of Elizabeth and the special blessing of whomever should remove Elizabeth from the throne, were discovered amongst the possessions of the priest, John Ballard. Sir Francis Walsingham made the discovery.
9. Along with the English conspirators, Monsieur du Foix, the French Ambassador is slain in his room.

Answer: False

It is Senor Alvaro de la Quadra, the Spanish Ambassador who is seen killed in his room. Although he has tipped off Sir Francis Walsingham about John Ballard being loose in England, Sir Francis sees fit to have Senor de La Quadra killed.
10. According to Elizabeth, who had such power over men's hearts?

Answer: The Virgin Mary

Elizabeth is musing with Sir Francis Walsingham. She has rid England of her enemies, what does she do now? Looking at a statue of the Virgin Mary, she says that she had such power over men's hearts, that they died for her. Sir Francis replies that they have found nothing to replace her. It is then that Elizabeth decides to adopt the guise of the Virgin Queen.
