Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what part of the world is "The Winter Guest" set?

Answer: Scotland

Set in Elie, Fife, Scotland, the 1997 film does not have the traditional "beginning, middle and end" plot, but instead concentrates on the interactions between four couples on one bitterly cold winter day: two elderly ladies (Chloe and Lily), two young boys bunking off school (Tom and Sam), an argumentative mother and daughter (Elspeth and Frances) and two teenagers (Nita and Alex).
2. Much of the drama focuses on Frances and her over-bearing yet ultimately loving mother, Elspeth. Renowned actress Emma Thompson plays Frances and her real-life mother plays Elspeth. What is the name of this actress?

Answer: Phyllida Law

The real-life relationship between the two actresses is clear as the drama unfolds. Emma Thompson, who is arguably the more well-known of the two, is famous for her appearances in the "Harry Potter" films and 2003 romantic comedy, "Love Actually". Phyllida Law is famous for her appearance in the film adaption of the Shakespeare play, "Much Ado About Nothing" (1993)

Coincidentally, the two actresses both starred in the blockbuster "Nanny McPhee" (2003) so "The Winter Guest" is not the only film they both had roles in.
3. Frances has a teenage son called Alex. A local girl called Nita, who is clearly attracted to him, throws a snowball at him, resulting in him dropping his breakfast. What is he eating?

Answer: A pie

Nita, played by Arlene Cockburn, completely disregards his anger by telling him that they sell better pies at a shop called Carmichael's. She then helps him fix his broken bicycle and they end up going back to his house where they realise they are attracted to each other. Arlene Cockburn also had a small part in the 1999 film version of "Tom's Midnight Garden".
4. Sam and Tom are two school boys who bunk off school to go to the beach, where they build a fire amongst some rocks and talk. What do they find in a hidden cardboard box?

Answer: Kittens

Both boys are horrified that somebody could dump two kittens. They both take one and Tom calls his Fanny. At the end of the film, we see Tom walk out on the frozen sea with the tiny kitten hidden down his jumper. Their fate is left untold.

Tom is played by a very young Sean Biggerstaff, who later found fame playing Oliver Wood in the "Harry Potter" films.
5. Cloe and Lily, two elderly ladies, have rather morbid hobby. What is it?

Answer: Going to strangers' funerals

Their interest in funerals may be because they're nearing death themselves. They much prefer burials over cremations and often scan the paper for death announcements, penciling in funerals they intend to go to into their diaries.
6. Even though there are four distinct "couples", sometimes these couples intermix. What does Elspeth give Tom on the beach?

Answer: Two toffees and money

She asks if she can share his fire and gives him two toffees (one for him and one for Sam) and some money to buy the kitten some milk. This is one of the most heartwarming scenes in the film.
7. What does Alex offer to Nita to warm her up when they have arrived at his house?

Answer: A hot bath

While she is bathing, Alex changes out of his school uniform and dries Nita's sodden clothes on the heater. They share an intimate moment on the living room floor but a picture of Alex's late father scares him and he stops what he is doing.
8. What does Frances shout to Elspeth that particularly upsets her?

Answer: "I don't need you!"

Elspeth tearfully argues back that just because she is all grown up, that doesn't mean she has to stop caring!
9. Which famous "Harry Potter"-starring actor directed "The Winter Guest"?

Answer: Alan Rickman

"The Winter Guest" was Rickman's directing film debut. Reminiscent of Hitchcock's appearances in his own films, Rickman appeared in the film as an uncredited man in the street.
10. "The Winter Guest" is based on a play. What is the name of the playwright?

Answer: Sharman Macdonald

The play first hit the stage at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in early 1995 before moving to the Almeida Theatre in London soon after. Alan Rickman also directed the play which also starred Phyllida Law as Elspeth. However, Sian Thomas took the role of Frances.

Sharman Macdonald is the mother of actress Keira Knightley.
