Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cole Sear discovers his school was once a legal courthouse after seeing a hanged man's ghost in which M. Night Shyamalan psychological thriller?

Answer: The Sixth Sense

In "The Sixth Sense", young Cole is cursed with the ability to see and speak with dead people. Cole's teacher, explaining the rich history of Philadelphia, asks the class if anyone knows what their school used to be, to which Cole replies, "They used to hang people here," having previously seen the hanged man's ghost. His stunned teacher denies this assertion and tells us that it was a "legal courthouse." The movie is famous for its surprise ending.

"I see dead people" is the chilling, immortal line uttered by Haley Joel Osment, who earned Best Supporting Actor Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his performance.
2. Cruel pranksters lock poor nine-year-old Frankie in the school cloakroom overnight when he sees the ghost of Melissa Ann Montgomery reenact her murder in this 1988 horror flick set in Rochester, NY.

Answer: Lady in White

This film was inspired by the legendary Lady in White said to haunt Durand-Eastman Park in Rochester, searching for her missing daughter. In the movie, protagonist Frankie is able to link Melissa's murderer to the owner of a class ring discovered in the cloak room where both Melissa and Frankie had been assaulted.

As the killer falls to his death, Melissa and her mother, the Lady in White, are reunited and ascend to heaven.
3. Moaning Myrtle and Nearly Headless Nick haunt these hallowed halls of learning.

Answer: Hogwarts

The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the "Harry Potter" series has its own cadre of ghosts. The series of eight films (based on seven books) is a coming-of-age tale chronicling the adventures of the orphaned magician and his battles with the evil Lord Voldemort, the murderer of Harry's parents.

Moaning Myrtle first appeared in 2002's "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," played by Shirley Henderson. She's most often seen haunting the second floor girls' lavatory where she gazed into the eyes of a basilisk, causing her demise. After Harry takes an interest in the circumstances surrounding Myrtle's death, she reciprocates by offering Harry and friends several clues in this film and in 2005's "Goblet of Fire."

John Cleese first appeared as Nearly Headless Nick in the 2001's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," and returned for "The Chamber of Secrets," popping up here and again to chat. (In 1492, Nick tried to straighten Lady Grieve's teeth, but instead caused her to grow a tusk, a crime for which he was sentenced to death. Sadly, the executioner's axe was too blunt and required 45 hacks to nearly sever poor Nick's head. Since that time he has served as the resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower.)
4. When Nancy drifts off to sleep in class, she sees a body bag being dragged down the hallway in this Wes Craven classic.

Answer: A Nightmare on Elm Street

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" centers on the exploits of Freddie, who terrorizes local teenagers' dreams with his signature bladed glove. The film blurs the lines between the imagined and the real as the teens wake with injuries consistent with their dreams.

As she nods off in class, Nancy chases the body bag down the hallway, thinking it holds her recently murdered friend, Tina. She is lured into Freddie Krueger's boiler room lair only to be awakened screaming when she bumps into a scalding hot steam pipe and burns her arm.

Wes Craven's arch-nemesis in junior high was a fellow named Fred Krueger. What a nightmare!
5. Restoring a demonically possessed classic '58 Plymouth Fury sends high school nerd Arnie Cunningham spiraling out of control in this 1983 Stephen King horror feature.

Answer: Christine

This Detroit native has a vicious start, as Christine (the murderous car) begins her killing spree on the assembly line. Christine becomes Arnie's first car and as he proceeds to restore her, his personality shifts from withdrawn to arrogant to angry. Christine takes it upon herself to seek vengeance on Arnie's rivals (and then some.)
6. After dying of a heart attack playing basketball for the University of Washington, Antoine's ghost returns to help brother Kenny and the team win the championship in this 1997 comedy.

Answer: The 6th Man

After Antoine dies during a game, the team starts to implode. However, Antoine returns to Kenny and encourages them to new heights. The players begin to think that it is wrong to play with outside help and in the end are able to capture the NCAA title without supernatural intervention.

Marlon Wayans and Kadeem Hardison starred as the Tyler brothers.
7. After Bobby dies in a deadly game of chicken, he returns to help nerdy Lenny earn the affections of the hottest girl in school in this 1985 comedy.

Answer: The Heavenly Kid

When his bracelet gets caught on the gear shift, Bobby dies in a fiery crash after his car flies off a cliff. Bobby's spirit guide informs him in order to get to heaven he needs to become Lenny's guardian angel. Lenny's life begins to parallel that of Bobby's, even engaging in his own deadly game of chicken.

The three wrong answers are the titles of songs featured on the soundtrack.
8. Film students get lost in the woods when they set out to film a documentary about a legendary witch whose ghost turns a local hermit into a serial killer. Which low budget blockbuster is this?

Answer: The Blair Witch Project

The three students interview locals for some background before wandering off into the woods and becoming hopelessly lost. As days pass, more bizarre and terrifying events take place from the mysterious appearance of crude rock piles and bundles of sticks to the abduction and distant screams of one of the students. This leads to a climactic scene set in the hermit's abandoned house.

With a budget well under $1 million, "The Blair Witch Project" grossed over $248 million.
9. After being beaten within inches of his life, Nick returns to high school the next day only to discover that no one can see or hear him in this 2007 teen drama.

Answer: The Invisible

Nick's friend Pete - thinking that Nick was on his way to London - tells a gang of thieves and bullies that Nick was the one who ratted them out to the police after a robbery. When it turns out he didn't make the trip, the gang beats Nick mercilessly and leaves him for dead. Nick's subsequent out-of-body experience convinces him that he is still alive and he desperately tries to get the attention of someone to save him.

"The Invisible" is a remake of the Swedish film, "Den Osynlige."
10. Medical students seek to discover if there is life after death by inducing clinical death for one minute, only to be confronted by ghosts from their pasts in this 1990 thriller.

Answer: Flatliners

Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland headlined a cast that included Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt. At first the students believe they are experiencing hallucinations, but physical manifestations outside the realm of scientific reasoning convince them much more is going on. Each character tries to resolve the underlying issues causing their personal demons to torment them with varying degrees of success.
