Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1980 film, "Smokey and the Bandit II", The Bandit and cohorts were transporting live cargo from Florida to Texas. What kind of animal were they transporting in the truck?

Answer: An Elephant

Sally Field, Jackie Gleason and Jerry Reed rejoined Burt Reynolds along with a newcomer to the cast, Dom DeLuise. Dom DeLuise played a gynaecologist who was persuaded to travel with Bandit and Frog to tend to an elephant. The elephant was being transported to Texas for the State Republican Convention to assist gambler Big Enos Burdette in his bid for governor of Texas. To complicate matters they were still being pursued by Sheriff Justis along with a posse and the elephant gave birth along the way. Joe Klecko, Don Williams and Terry Bradshaw made cameo appearances. Reynolds and Dom DeLuise worked again in "Cannonball Run" in 1981 and in "Cannonball Run II" three years later.
2. Which 1953 film starring an international cast was based in Central America and involved four men hired to transport nitroglycerin over a mountain road for an oil company?

Answer: The Wages of Fear

Yves Montand, Antonio Centa, Charles Vanel and Peter van Eyck were cast as four men stranded in a Central American town who accepted an offer of $2,000 apiece to transport explosives over a mountain range so an American oil company could extinguish an oil rig fire. The four men selected were from diverse backgrounds, and the first part of the film explored their characters and motives for accepting the job. The remainder of the film was a suspenseful depiction of the dangers the men faced while transporting the dangerous cargo over primitive mountain roads.
"The Wages of Sin" was a drama released in 1929.
"Dangerous Crossing" was a 1953 movie about honeymooners on a cruise starring Michael Rennie and Jeanne Crain.
"Beat the Devil" was a 1953 Humphrey Bogart film.
3. The 1998 film, "Black Dog", starred Patrick Swayze, Randy Travis and singer Meat Loaf. The film centered around Swayze getting conned into running illegal guns after he was released from prison. What does the term "Black Dog" refer to in the movie?

Answer: It's a legendary hallucination that Swayze's character saw .

Several cultures have had folklore tales of evil black dogs in one form or another. The legend was brought to contemporary times in the movie when the black dog visions appeared to truckers when they got greedy and pushed themselves too hard. In "Black Dog" Swayze had a Black Dog vision when he wrecked and accidentally killed a motorist on the side of the road.

The accident sent him to prison. Upon his release he agreed to haul a load to pay off his back debts. Meat Loaf played the owner of the truck. Before long Swayze realized he'd been conned into transporting illegal arms and ended up in a web of intrigue between the people who hired him and the FBI. Tennessee, New Jersey, Connecticut and areas of Route 66 are among the states that supposedly have roaming black dogs as apparitions in one form or another.
4. In the 1987 film, "Over the Top", Sylvester Stallone portrayed a struggling truck driver who also competed in what sport?

Answer: Arm Wrestling

Sylvester's character tried to get his son back into his life after a ten-year absence. He picked up his son, played by David Mendenhall, and on the way home he learned that his wife passed away. The son became upset and went to live with his grandpa. When Stallone's character competed in an arm-wrestling competition in Las Vegas and won, he gained the respect of his son.
In the film Stallone was scheduled to arm-wrestle the actual reigning champ, but it was decided that it may not have been authentic if he beat him. Rick Zumwalt portrayed a champ in the movie named "Bull" Hurley whom Stallone beat in the finals. The grand prize was naturally a new semi rig that enabled Stallone to start his own trucking business.
Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins, Robin Zander, Eddie Money and Asia were among the ten artists who contributed to the soundtrack.
5. Which director, known for directing such graphic Westerns as "The Wild Bunch" (1969) and "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia" (1974) directed the 1978 trucker film, "Convoy"?

McCall hit record of the same name. Kris Kristofferson played Martin "Rubber Duck" Penwald who became involved in a fracas with Sheriff Wallace then headed for the border to escape retribution. He picked up a photographer along the way played by Ali MacGraw. The chase resulted in a show-down at the Mexican border.
John Sturges directed Clint Eastwood and Robert Duvall in the 1972 Western, "Joe Kidd".
Some of Howard Hawkes' Western films were "The Outlaw" (1943) and "Rio Bravo" (1959). "Apache" was a 1954 western film with Burt Lancaster directed by Robert Aldrich.
