Answer: Blue

No explanation is given for why her color is different. My guess is that, as she is Magi's apprentice and future guardian of the forest, her blue color comes from access to certain magic that other fairies don't have. Magi doesn't glow when flying, but her magic appears blue. Also, when Magi disintegrates, she becomes blue energy, and the dispersing specks of light briefly turn all the fairies blue. Crysta is voiced by Samantha Mathis.

Answer: Pips

Pips (Christian Slater) is upset over the time Crysta spends with Magi, and later Zak. The nature of their relationship is a bit ambiguous, as while Crysta sees Pips as a friend, he is jealous over her time with Zak. As well, they do nothing romantic in the film. Pips' gang is made of beetles who ride other insects. Two of his friends are voiced by Cheech and Chong.

Answer: A biology lab

"I just flew in from a biology lab! I'm back and I'm flappin' free!" Batty was experimented on before he escaped. His song is horrifying when you decipher the lyrics: he's been electrocuted, injected, fed pesticides, vivisected (dissected while alive), and implanted with wires that affect his mind.

Whenever the wire sticking out of his head is touched, his train of thought changes completely. This was Robin Williams' first role as an animated character; he recorded the Genie in "Aladdin" later, though both films came out in the same year. Batty loves fruit but isn't the size of a fruit bat; this is either an animation error or the experiments on Batty altered his diet and the foods he craves.

Answer: Crysta messes up a spell.

Humans normally can't see or hear fairies properly (they appear as lights), so Crysta says, "I give the gift of fairy size-uh, sight!" so Zak (Jonathan Ward) can hear her warning about the tree that's about to fall on him. The words are taken literally as he can now see her...and is shrunk to her size. Early in the film, she successfully uses the spell to communicate with Batty.

When she first tries to change Zak back, he actually starts getting taller, then shrinks again when his head hits a branch.

Answer: Toxic Love

Tim Curry voices Hexxus and sings this anthem to pollution. Hexxus, a spirit of destruction, has been trapped in a tree for an unknown amount of time. He first reacts to toxins in the red paint Zak sprays on the tree and becomes free when the leveler cuts it down. "Ferngully" has three songs performed by characters: "Batty Rap" by Batty, "Toxic Love" by Hexxus, and "If I'm Gonna Eat Somebody" by the goanna that tries to eat Zak.

The other songs are non-diegetic.

Answer: Walkman

Some of them don't like the music at first but get into the swing of things and dance to "Land of a Thousand Dances". Zak lets Pips keep it, so they'll have music until the batteries run out.

Answer: The tree is in pain.

He thinks nothing of cutting into tree bark, but Crysta can feel the tree's pain from Zak's action. Later, Zak can feel a tree's pain when the water becomes polluted.

Answer: Swimming underground

They swim in an underground, sparkling grotto where Crysta takes Zak's hands, which glow. He kisses her, but she pulls away, looking bewildered; perhaps fairies don't kiss? He then discovers they're both floating. This might be where Zak picks up the ability to feel plants' pain.

Answer: Slime skeleton

In "Toxic Love", Hexxus starts as a pile of muddy gunk. A black skeletal torso emerges before he takes his gaseous form. He reverts to this gunky appearance when Zak turns off the leveler, becoming a black, skeletal monster of slime and lava, likely feeding off the oil and gas remaining in the leveler's tanks.

Answer: The fairies seal him in a tree.

Crysta takes a single seed and flies into Hexxus; plants begin to grow, and the remaining fairies, using Magi's dispersed magic, seal him into a tree the way Magi once did. Let's just hope this tree isn't cut down like the last one...

With her stronger magic, Crysta easily returns Zak to his normal size. The end of the film strongly hints that he is going to become more environmentally conscious.
